Stephen Malkmus is an absolutely indie rock legend and genius. The former Pavement frontman and current leader of Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks is releasing the seventh album "Sparkle Hard" with the Jicks since forming that band after Pavement’s 1999 breakup. We've met the 51-year-old singer, songwriter and guitarist in his former hometown Berlin, Germany and talked about the new album, songs that sound like old Pavement material, having Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon on the record and the evolving DIY music scene.

The dude is just a straight-up icon himself. So influential. So understated yet brilliant. There's nothing this guy is done with his music career that I haven't found exceptional.

"So easy to over-rehearse things now" -- Malkmus dropping a real nugget of wisdom there for recording artists in the digital age.

Love this guy. From recent interviews he’s always mentioned how he loves it when younger people become inspired and get into Pavement and the jicks. Well, sir, I’m glad to be one of them

You and the bands you've been in have been a huge influence on me. From my music to my day to day life. The music kept me sane in my darkest times. It also helps me keep forming a style of my own to play and sing. Thank you for all you do. It's not just me you encourage, it's millions more

SM's back in Berlin? In that case, SM and Anton Newcombe should meet up and discuss possibly making music together...

That Record Got Me High Podcast on Soundcloud sits down with “Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain” in Season 1, Episode 9. Undoubtedly our educated guesses are, in fact, ignorant missteps. However, they are entertaining ignorant missteps. Thankfully, there are no bodies to spin in graves for this particular episode.

Wrong, Middle America does not sound like Pavement. Bike Lane maybe. Guitars at the end of Kite and Let Them Eat Vowels, yeah. Not really but more than Middle America.

Keep looking into that mirror and you too will be a ghoul in no time. Unless we blow ourselves up before or you just happen to die of one of the many available terrible options out there before aging some more. And no, I don't want to get into the Tenpenny Tower and I hate the ghouls who are actually in it and pretend to be not.
