- Travel Adjustment can fix these common problems faced by home owners:
1) Door closes too far and is causing the rail to bow and belt/chain to sag
2) Door doesn't close enough and cold air and bugs are getting in
3) Door doesn't open enough and is causing clearance issues
4) Door is opening too far and is hitting the bolt in the rail
All of these issues can be solved quickly with simple programming of your Chamberlain, LiftMaster, or Craftsman garage door opener travel adjustment settings.

Where is the link to your video for the garage opener with the set screws? I didn’t see the link pop up and that’s the one that I need to watch. Our yard was struck by lightning and now the garage opener closes too far down. It’s making the support beam bow and has started to bend the release bracket/brace
Thank you for saving me a $100 trip charge for something so simple! I was ready to give up then I saw this. Worked perfectly!
Your video was exactly what I needed to adjust the travel stops on my Chamberlain. Thank you.
Thank you so much! I had to disengage the trolley during a power outage and did it the "right" way but when I went to re-engage the carriage was in the center so it would go to close and make a "insanely loud machine gun sound and bowed the entire bar. I looked all over Google and this is the only one that showed me everything I needed to do.
Finally, I knew the adjustments were there but didn't know how they worked. Previous owner didn't leave manuals. Thanks a ton. I'm back in business with no more 10 minute up down games to get door closed
Your 3 minutes video save me lots of time and money so thank you so much for uploading that video.
Thanks!
Great job explaining up down, how to adjust door, down on left 2:59 is great, down on right see light, how to balance door?
Help. My garage door pushes down when i press open, then pull back up two foot and stops there.. leaving a gap😢. If i press open again it will do the same thing pushes down against pavement then pull back up two foot n stops😢 The metal arm bended now😢
I installed my Chamberlain B2405 yesterday and noticed when the door is closed the rail is bowed and one side of the belt is really tight. Your video helped, thank you and I watched the whole ads.
worked on my LiftMaster like a charm....thank you so much.
Thanks a lot! Too easy of a fix and saved me a lot of worry over critters getting in!
This adjustment video is so necessary, thanks tons bro
I was looking for a video to fix another problem, but found this and it fixed this problem that I was having. Thanks
Hi, I'm having the issue that several people have asked about in the comments, I programmed the down travel but the train does not stop where it was programed to do so, this makes the train keep moving and bends the track upward. Sometimes, the door opens up automatically, but other times, it days shut with the bent track. Please, if anyone has suggestions on how I can fix it, please share. I have been told that it could be the rpm sensor or a logic board issue, but I'm not sure if that could be.
Same situation even ripped a bracket off the door. I managed to fix it but the door still won't stop where I set it. If this keeps up my door will get more trashed. Did you ever figure it out? On mine the middle button is not lighting up but I am offline. It is a My Q unit.
I'm having similar issues with a skylink. It was working good when I first tried it, then it tried to close farther than it should and got jammed up so I had to disassemble it to reset it.
I'd rather have reliable mechanical limit switches than the new electronic ones. 😊
Exactly what I needed. Thanks!!
This was the video I was looking for, thank you sir, that fixed my right up
Wanted to let you know this video was a HUGE help! I didn’t have my documentation handy and it seemed my google searches were lackluster on the adjustments!
Ours gets stuck half way and won’t learn the position, won’t fully open or close
Simple easy video. Thank you very much.
Great video, the problem I am having in on the down size closing, when it gets close to close it is bending the top of my garage door
Thanks for your vid. I was looking for those two half circle buttons. Your vid worked perfectly. Need to life a little more to get my car in garage.
Thanks again
Worked like a charm, thank you!
All the like and subscribe stuff. You saved me $100 service charge!
what if you dont have arrow buttons,my door rebound if a 2x 4 is underneath but bows the track if not ,as motor does not kick out
Thanks for the simple fix!
Thank you.
I did install it and working fine.
For some reaseon it is stopping working. How can i reprogram it again please help.
This was very helpful! I think I adjusted the down limit too far, as it immediately starts going back up. Now I’m stuck in the down limit test cycle; the down button keeps flashing and I’m not sure how to readjust from here.
Thanks for this video. I followed to the T. When I am testing closing of the garage door, it just goes all the way down beyond what I had set for the closing position. Any help is appreciated. Also opening of the garage door is very slow and closing is relatively fast.
Thank u u saved our garage
This is very good information. However, I have a related problem. Our garage door got replaced and now it goes down too FAST! It sounds like that rollers are being banged and not dropping fast enough to allow the door to fall. How do we slow down the movement of the doors going down. There are no problems or sounds when the door goes up!
Mine literally yanked on the chain and cable and caused it to completely come loose. I had to manually lower it and unplug once it hits the floor because it continues to keep going down and cause my mounting bracket to absorb all the pressure. Should I just tighten the chain in the lowered position then do exactly what you showed us here?
Hey mate, thanks for the video. I have the Merlin Powerace. I tried to program the travel adjustment but my unit is not memorising the set. I did the up set, down set, end then when I go to the 3rd step, that is just checking if goes up, doesn't work. Do you know the reason it is nor memorising the set? I really appreciate your help. Alex
My door is doing the same thing some the others are when it gets down to about the last 8 inches when closing it slams down
That’s really helpful! Thanks!
When I moved in to my home the garage door had rust all across the bottom. Someone suggested it could be because the tension is off so it’s closing too hard and then damaging the bottom.
Does that make sense and would this remedy the situation so I can avoid further damage?
God bless you, this video saved me hours of worry and frustration. Good looking out
Hey there, mine is stuck up at the bolt (stop) up near the opener. Can't get it to release or go back down either by button on wall, remote, or the travel buttons. Any pointer or help would be appreciated.
Thank you for the advice it really helps
Hi, where is your other video for “set screws” instead of the up-down arrows? I could not find that.
My door’s chain sprocket sheered off. I replaced that but now the door closes so far that it bows the rail upward, then bounces back up instead of remaining shut.
How far can a person adjust those “set screws” on the model I have (Liftmaster 1/2 hp)?
Is there anything else I should be doing instead of messing with those?
Thanks.
Thank you very much friend.
You helped a lot.
Thanks so much for the video.
I have tried the adjustments. However when I lower the garage door the rail bends upward. So, I can't lower the door.
I'm lowering the garage with a wooden door. Please give me some advice. Thank you in advance
I just installed a garage door opener today and it is basically over closing and opening. The wall displays an error of excessive closing force. Any suggestions for an adjustment to get it operating properly?
Awesome pal…exactly what was wrong. Appreciate the video. 👍🏻
This is the help I am looking for.... HOWEVER.... When I press the down arrow, the garage does not close merely by holding the button. I've got the up setting to flash green. But the light flashes red when I push the down arrow. I have a genie so it's a little different with the buttons... there are 4 arrows a code button and also screw options. So if you have any insight on how to get my garage door to close, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks to this video, at least the door is no longer bowing. But now it's also no longer opening all the way either. Please help.
Hello,
I go through the same process and it all goes well until when it goes down for the last time after it’s programmed, it goes back up by itself. I cannot keep the door down.
Thanks
I got same issue and read the code error message first, mines is the travel kit was broken and I got the new kit and replace, reset the adjustment program. Good to go
Does your trolly twist when the door is closed?
Just purchased the Chamberlain, my trolly seems to be seized right to were the stop bolt is,,the chain on the one side has alot lot of tension to it, what am I to do? Or do you have any videos helping with this.
Hi
I have a problem with my garage door opener B750, it looks like the garage door opener you show at your vídeo. I have to adjust the travel límits of My garage opener but it's just Open halfway and close without any problem, and it doesn't blink any error light.
Thanks
Hi Rene, when you go through the travel adjustment procedure does the door open all the way when you are setting the upper travel limit?
@@EverydayHomeRepairs Yes, it does.
The garage door opener Open without any problem when I am setting up the travel limits.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs I could send You a vídeo.

👍
Thanks a bunch ❤
I need to back off the down position some, but when I press the center button to make adjustments nothing happens.
You forgot to add the link to you other video for people that have openers with set screws and your channel doesn’t show any videos relating to it.
I received an opening force detected error and disconnected the door from the trash. It carriage has moved to the very front of the track so I am not able to connect the garage trolley. Will I be able adjust so it will move forward?
Thanks!!
Thank you! Video helped me fix the problem!!
Thank you so much for the information
Hi..i did all this but in going down..door speed seems fast and wants to slam shut...i did reset safty reversal and using board..it did not hit board and go back up....
How to do the screw type on my old garage door motor
Thanks this video was helpful, but I'm concerned I may have a different problem. I was trying to stop cold air from coming in the garage door, so I replaced the seal at the bottom of the door (the old one was crusty and flat). I installed the new one thinking my garage/basement wouldn't get as cold, and surprise surprise, it got much much colder. I can see air flowing in the top and on the upper corners. I thought that maybe I need to adjust it so it closes more, thinking that might bring the top panels closer to the frame/house. But I'm not sure if that will help. I don't want to over tighten and break something. Suggestions?
Do you see a gap at the bottom? In the daytime do you see daylight coming through? You can also test with 2 people at night. 1 outside with a flashlight and one inside looking for gaps by light passing.
When the garage door comes down when it hits the ground it makes a lond noise which leads me to believe it is coming down to hard also I can see light from under the door any suggestions jan
I get the settings for the motor...but how you control the door with the remote...this is the one with 1 2 3 buttons
Spot on THANKS
Thanks you’re a great instructor 👍👍👍
How do I adjust my garage door to stop when closing, when it hits the ground? craftman 1/2 hp
HI. THE HIGH LIMIT SET PERFECTLY, HOWEVER, THE BOTTOM LIMIT WON’T SET, THE LIGHT KEEPS FLASHING. BUT IF I HOLD THE BOTTOM ARROW MANUALLY IT WILL CLOSE BUT NOT WITH THE REMOTE, IT STARTS TO GO DOWN BUT QUICKLY REVERSES WELL BEFORE ITS A 1/4 Of THE WAY DOWN. AND YES I DID PRESS THE SET BOTTOM AFTER I LOWERED THE DIR TO THE PROPER LEVEL. ANY IDEAS?
I am not able to perform above steps. I am able to do all the way up step, then when i press down to set up down, it stops middle, then i not going down. What will be the problem?
Just installed my craftsman door opener and trying to manually adjust travel, its goes up just fine but will not go back down. Do you have any advice?
I have the exact same belt drive unit as in your video, and by now, I've mastered the programming of door travel both from your video and from the original manual. Issue is, the carriage is now stuck at a weird position, and even after unplugging the opener for hours, each time as I try to program again, the carriage is only traveling within a 10 inch or so area near the opener, and I'm totally stuck after days of trying to resolve. Any ideas or suggestions please? Thanks in advance!
I have a problem with my garage door opener keep stopping every 5 -10 cm open or closing both sides
Just to make sure I understand the problem, when you press the button to open or close the door the door only travels 5-10 cm then stops?
@@EverydayHomeRepairs
Yes keep stopping doesn’t go all the way down and up every like 1 foot that move from the adjustment central
@@yousefarak1 When you go through the whole adjustment procedure does everything progress like in the video? If you had a video of the issue you could post it to our Facebook Group "Everyday Home Repairs Community" and that would help a ton in troubleshooting.
Thank you, you mad my life easier 😉
I have a similar problem as TS, too much down force. I toggle the purple button (down), stop it at desired spot, but when I hit the remote button to open it, as manual states, it tries to force it down more, bending the travel bar a lot, then travels back up. According to manual, hitting the remote to open after stopping at desired spot via purple button, it should learn that spot, and open, not force down more. Any ideas? I should add that the reason for needing to readjust travels is because i put a new, thick seal on the bottom of garage door.
Hey Tom, what is the model number of your Chamberlain garage door opener? B550?
@@EverydayHomeRepairs model # 248754
The top panel of my door will sometimes hit the pulley wheel which will cause it to go back up, I have tried adjusting the bar that connects to the garage door, making it shorter and longer but it seems to not do anything, it might hit the pulley wheel one out of 10 times. Any suggestions?
My is an overhead and it’s closing to much that it lifts the bracket that holds the chain to the wall
Thanks so much!!!
I've done this process a few times and it works perfectly every time. But then when I use my door a few times, it goes all the way down and then backs off 1-2cms. Thus creating a small gap between the floor and bottom seal.
Do you think that I have a faulty motherboard or something electronic related like this?
So where's the link for the other type of garage door opener?
Just put up bluetooth model dual light like the one in your video, same controls, same programming, my problem is I program the up and it blinks twice as it should then I do down and it blinks twice then starts beeping ridiculously, flashes 12 times then goes up, flashes 12 more times and goes down to far at the end and makes left side belt sag way too much and right side to tight, my header board cracked because it wouldn't stop, so let it sit for 3 or 4 minutes and it beeps and blinks 5 times and light turns off extremely puzzled!
I plug the motor and it only turner's one way even pressing the down bottom.. ...I can't not set the limits...does not respond..keeps on turning for a wile and stops..
Thanks, your video was very helpful 👍
BIG THANK YOU :)
Hey brother highly appreciTe it been years n forgot all the simplest this waz a breeze may you be Blessed 🙌 10 fold brothers thx a mill
When I close the garage door it almost jerks when it first starts moving then everything is fine. It starts down way to hard, scared it's going to RIP the opener out of the ceiling
Thanks
I noticed the rail in this video still pushes up a little once the door fully closes. How much is acceptable? I'm having a heck of a time finding the sweet spot where there's zero daylight and also zero pushing up on the rail.
I would favor having the rail push up just a bit to get a good seal at the bottom of the door.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs that's kinda where I am too. Thank you!
Why does it push the rail up so hard after the door closes? I’m thinking it must have closed too far causing tension on the rail. How does one fix this? It’s puzzling me for many days
I think I found my answer online. “The rail bowing up is caused by an improper angle of the door arm, or if the rail is not angled correctly.”
The real solution that I tried and worked is to set the down position of the door 1/3 inch off from the floor. I have no bowing on the rail now and the door sits flushed on the floor when it’s closed.
Nice, glad you found the solution and thanks for providing the feedback!
do you press the green button after lol
I just installed my new opener and I have a gap at the bottom, my chain is loose and the door open stay shut 😡😡😡
The top arrows, blinking, and my garage door wont stay shut
Trolley stuck on bolt and won’t move
Where’s the other video??????
My garage opens only from 30 yards away not up close but closes up close
My issue is a bit different, and I've tried every adjustment I can think of at this point (springs, rail angle, clean/lube the rail/wheels/tracks, etc). The problem is on cold open (not necessarily cold temps, but when the garage door's been closed for a while), it sticks/binds right at the beginning and bows the rail up. If I close and reopen, it doesn't do it. Anyone else experience this and possibly have a fix?
Try lithium grease on the springs
@@twobits1602 thank for the feedback! The problem wasn't the opener/tracks/wheels at all, actually. The previous owner painted the door and there are still remnants of paint that stick to the weather stripping. Just needed to get in there and clean it up really well.
@@milheim05 this is exactly what I have, it’s been 3 years since the door was painted by the builder, and it still gets sticky in the summer time, any solutions?
@@Jay-vu4pg nothing as permanent as I had hoped. I went around with a razor blade and tried to clean up what I could. There are actually quite a few tears in the weather stripping, so I think I may just replace it all this Spring/Summer.
Chain has too much slack on one side
Yeah seriously I clicked on the video and like..where is the other video version with the set screws?
