    I haven't built one of these in about 20 years. Last one I built was based off a 150ma 8kv transformer, forced air static gap, a home made acrylic/flashing/mineral oil cap. It was loud but made some very nice violet arcs. Best arc distance I managed was just shy of about 4 feet.

    Only 4kv? Nicely done. Those must give a nice bit of power to the coil. Probably about 500ma, yeah? From what I've read they can handle some abuse. That's about a 2kw coil. Planning on a similar power supply. But I'm thinking about submerging the transformers in mineral oil

    Very nice! Looks like your primary is wound counterclockwise from the inside out and the secondary is wound clockwise. Is that correct?

      Just an old large transformer, nothing special. You can also just use another MOT

    That is amazing thank you for the inspiration I am building my own dual MOT Tesla coil and love it when I come across vids like this! Any advice on where I can buy my MMC bank?

      just buy a bunch of small capacitors and wire them to meet the needed capacitance and voltage rating.

    I have an urgent question concerning my coil. The resonant cap size for the coil is .01uf while the resonant cap size for the dual mots is .6uf, how do I get around this. And how did you figure out what to do??

      Platinum Science what exactly do you mean by that? Can you explain in more detail.

    • @ibraheemalquthmi9146
      @ibraheemalquthmi9146 6 лет назад

      there is no such thing as resonant cap size for the power supply BUT there is something called recomnded maximum capcitance for the power supply which happens to be around 5 or 6 micro farads for dual mots like what you said so you dont have any problems with youre resonant cap size of the coil

    hi, i have some question, is the strike rail a circle connected to ground to prevent sparking to the secondary, and why does it need to be a open circle

    • @213BRANDONP
      @213BRANDONP 9 месяцев назад +1

      Ok the strike rail is to prevent discharge into primary coil . As for the reason it has to be an open loop a closed loop would would be like a em antenna causing interference to be emitted everywhere

    what is the diameter of the secondary copper wire?

  • @52n1
    @52n1 9 лет назад

    That's a brilliant coil, mate! I'm just judging from the video but the discharge is pretty thick which implies a fairly powerful discharge. I noticed you had a bank of capacitors in the primary circuit. Were you ever in a position to replace this bank with (say) an equivalent single capacitance which might have a lower ESR?
    Whatever you've done it's worked well! Thanks awfully for taking the time to share this video clip.

    Hi, how did you calculate the primary cap? I have some MOTs but I don't have the nominal power and can't calculate the capacitor to begin with my tesla coil design. Can you help me with the design process? i don't know whixh parameters must be calculated and ones must be selected by me. Thanks a lot.

      Gabriel Droguett Olea usually mots have an output of 2100 volts, go to deep fried neon they have calculators that will tell you the capacitance needed for your power supply

  • @Caterday1234

    Knowing the characteristics of MOT"S wouldn't you fly through them? With all that arcing it seems like it would murder them. Just wondering. Nice job though. :)

    • @jobbeeftink5677
      @jobbeeftink5677  10 лет назад

      Well, mot's aren’t build to power a tesla coil of course, but they can handle a little abuse and they have the protection of a large ballast and a safety gap (and terry filter) so they should be fine … I hope. :) haha

      +Job Beeftink how exactly would it be best to go about hooking two or more MOTs up together to power a t coil? You should make a more detailed description for me if you can. Can I mod the transformer for better performance and if so what exactly would I do?

      Mr. MHz I already built a basic spark gap tesla coil. I know how they work. I know how to be safe. But I built it in one night (I was rushing), and it's not very impressive because I paid little attention when building the primary, secondary, and top load. You can barely see the sparks during the day.

    I'm interested in building one of these. I have one question for you. What is the advantage of the rotary spark gap compared to a regular spark gap?

    • @jobbeeftink5677
      @jobbeeftink5677  10 лет назад +1

      interval of firing is more reliable/stable, easier to work with.
      electrodes are cooled constantly, speed control while gap is firing, really handy.

    • @hulksmashnoobsgotit2387
      @hulksmashnoobsgotit2387 Год назад

      ionized air is moved away relative to the gap so that way a continuous arc wont jump the gap

    Job Beeftink i really need your help. What is the voltage and current output of your MOT's? Im trying to use MOT's but im getting a output of 6000V @ 137mA! This current is too high and the optimum MMC would be 118nf!!! How did your MMC value get down to 56nf? Please help.
