      To take the whole equation to zero

      Actually that term comes from solving the second order differential equation that he formed on applying newton's second law to the oscillators motion. If we know how to solve second order differential equations, we'd probably be able to arrive at the same kind of equation for the displacement of the mass.
      I personally do not know second order differential equations, but hope to learn them in college and derive this solution myself.
