Naomi Mathis joined the military to provide stability for herself and her children. When she was stationed in a combat zone, she found she needed to emotionally disconnect from her family in order to do her job. Upon returning home, Naomi was diagnosed with chronic Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and faced the challenge of reconnecting with her kids in a meaningful way. Her journey to regain a "normal" life inspired her to help make that transition for other veterans as smooth as possible. Naomi's story reminds us that it is often only be going through difficult times ourselves that we can truly understand how to help others. Produced in partnership with Disabled American Veterans.
    Directed by Thomas Torrey

    Cinematography by Brent Christy
    Edited by Shea Sizemore

My big brother came back from Viet Nam,, a Corporal in the Marines. I was so proud of him, he looked so sharp. He came back a different man,; they called it battle fatigue. He was never the same. As a joke, I snuck up on him and yelled "boo" I was only 11 or so....he nearly killed me...it would've been one more thing to feel guilty about. He eventually told me about some of his experiences I guess he felt safe. I lost him in '03, I never thanked him for his service...so since I can't ever do it now, I'll thank you for your service instead. I am truly grateful.

We’re you conscripted drafted into the US military? Or did you willingly volunteer to join the US military?

She willingly joined. She needed benefits and sustainability to support her kids.

Naomi, I'm so sorry that you've gone through so many emotional traumas in your life. No one person deserves even a fraction of it. I'm very proud of the woman you have grown to become. And thank you for your service to our country.
