  • In 1985 "Capital Edition" profiled/interviewed D.C. artist Sam Gilliam in his 14th street Washington, DC studio...as he and an assistant worked on projects. Raul Rivero produced the segment. John O. Goldsmith narrated. Gilliam was already a successful artist. He would become fabulously successful. Today (2019) his previous works routinely sell at auction for $100,000 - $200,000. In 2017 one sold for $560,000.

Sam Gilliam went on lithium to treat his bipolar disorder. It’s a complicated medication, and it can offer some relief but also many drawbacks. In his case, it damaged his kidneys, affected his ability to create art, and ultimately led to depression.
He was on the drug for decades, slowly coming off of it just a few years ago. He had been practically catatonic in his ill health.
*Suddenly, in his 80s, he’s creating again, and gaining recognition for his work. He's not letting the stigma of bipolar illness, being a person of color, or age get him back down.*

He is ignored by the art world because art institutions cannot USE him to say our institution is not guilty of not showing Black artists. See, one cannot tell by looking at his work what ethic group he comes from nor does it say that Black people are oppress, which is the ONLY comment art institutions want art to make to its audience about minorities. All artists should be free to do the work they want and not be ignored because their work does not vindicated money making art institutions.

I don't know what kind of medication Sam is on, or for what disorder, but his Art is unique and I believe him to be a true master of colour field; arguably up there with the best. The Music, as mentioned, really takes a back seat to the painter in this 'Symphony of Color', nevertheless, the narrative is interesting I suppose.

Does he uses regular houses wall paint to do his job? I like colors, but each painter has its gift. I like to paint mostly people. Painting "colors" is a good thing if the painter knows how to combine them. He does a good job at it by turning them into an amalgamate of colors. Good job!

I doubt if it is house paint he uses. Golden brand paint is an art product. Looks like acrylics mixed with gloss media.

It's a shame that your vision is so limited, perhaps you are color blind.
