AMERICA: Who We Really Are
США
Добавлен 15 фев 2019
If all goes well, this channel will soon be filled with timeless stories about the real America...the people, places and events that have always made this country what it is. The boot maker, the shop keeper, the artist, the presidential photographer, Americans who have come and gone but never really left us because all of our story subjects are threads in the fabric of America from the days of our founding fathers, to right now and tomorrow.. It sounds corny. And maybe it is. And maybe that's true. But if you hang on Fox News or MSNBC for the latest word on America today...our stories will will be a reminder that what you hear and see on the news today is not what we are really all about. These stories were mostly culled from the archives of a newsmagazine program in the 80s: "Capital Edition" and a series of nationally syndicated specials in 1999: "Picture This, AMERICA." Enjoy.

Misty And The Cowboys - the Chincoteague Island, Virginia Pony Swim
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.2 года назад
Every year, in July, tens of thousands of people descend on the tiny eastern Virginia community to witness the wild pony swim, roundup and auction. On August 4, 1985 WUSA TV-9's "Capital Edition" documented the event in a report produced by Todd Mesirow and narrated by John Goldsmith. A footnote: starting in 2018, after the death of a pony during the "penning", the People For The Ethical Treatm...
Tchaikovsky's Gift - The Nutcracker - Washington Ballet
Просмотров 2512 года назад
The year is 1984. Mary Day is still at the helm of the Washington Ballet Company that she founded 8 years earlier but was an offshoot the Washington Ballet School she had co-founded in 1944. Capital Edition (WUSA TV-9) would air this report, produced by Raul Rivero, on Christmas eve, even as performances of The Nutcracker ballet continued at the Lisner Auditorium. FYI: Mary Day died in 2006. Sh...

On Christmas Eve 1996, almost 12 years to the day after we broadcast this story on "Capital Edition" (12/23/84 WUSA-TV 9 Washington, DC) Ed Herberlein died. He was 81. And the "Tuttle & Spice General Store" of Shenandoah Valley, Virginia died with him. Over the years he had filled it with a little bit of everything from times gone by. He didn't sell anything. He didn't even charge admission if ...
Washington, By George
Просмотров 1062 года назад
John Goldsmith narrates this early/mid 1980s "Capital Edition" (WUSA-TV 9) profile of Washington, Virginia - a community of fewer 100 souls - with two major claims to fame: it was surveyed by Geo. Washington his-self and it is home to "The Inn at Little Washington" which is still there, still famous and still has the same chef/owner.

John Goldsmith narrates this report that appeared on "Capital Edition" (WUSA-TV 9) in Nov. 1984. With a camera crew he wandered around the Washington stadium during a nationally televised Monday Night Football game between the (then) Redskins and the Atlanta Falcons. Mostly ignoring the action on the field, he focused on the brightly lit life in the stands from the "nosebleed" section to the ba...
1981 Year Ender Special

It was a pretty weird year, 1981, inspiring this half hour, prime-time glimpse into the rear view mirror, on what was then Washington, DC's WDVM-9. It actually won a Peabody Award for writing. Two things about that. A big surprise to me because I didn't even known the show's producer, Mark Seeger, had submitted it. And I'm guessing the judges were wow'd by a turn of a phrase or two early on and...
Frosty Morning in the Rockies

A February morning in 2021 I discovered a frost like I'd never seen before (or since) at my cabin about 8,500 feet in the Colorado Rockies. Every blade of grass, pine needle and link in the fence was glistening. Whipped out the iPhone and took a few shots before the rising sun forever erased this picture.

It's almost too real in 2019 terms to be believed but in 1942 a new novel, made into a new movie was all about - well, a lot about - Donald Trump by a different name and the illegal, immoral, unpatriotic activities of our times and those times. Let me put it to you this way: he's a billionaire. He has a political organization called "Forward America Association" which has millions of fervent fo...

Bravo! This is a television news classic!
Aren't we all. JG
Hal would be so disappointed in todays society
Wonderful mini-documentary. I remember seeing this when I was a kid, left a lasting impression. I remembered the image of it, but did not remember it's awesome size! As an artist myself, when I saw de Weldon up on that latter, it really brought home what a 'monumental' 😁 achievement it really was.
What PRECIOUS People they were and the horses they rode in on, too!
It's a shame they had to close this section off, I did enjoy walking through it and looking at all the unusual animals. Only thing that kinda spooked me was the Orb Weaver Spiders they had just before you transitioned into the butterfly house.
This movie explains the entire plot of today’s Democratic elistist maxist facist Party and how they really feel about their followers
Clyde and his beautiful wife are amazing photographers. 🎉
One of our favorite stories. JG

Good for them!

William Charles Sheldon was killed in Da Nang Vietnam War in May 1968 ,he was a navy dog handler guarding, a communication building when they were attacked by the VC, William was killed from a 50 caliber machine gun ,from friendly fire.... only 3 months in country.. so sad.
That kids show Ranger Hal was also aired on Post Newsweek's sister station WJXT Channel 4 in Jacksonville that lasted from 1958 til 1969!!!
Something about thoes photos like memories that aren't mine but are familiar. Its weird feeling nostalgic about these photos because i was born in 08
I've been dealing with "Bill" and the White Post Gang since 1999, (it's 2014 now) they are great !
I used to wait tables at a restaurant in Winchester and Billy tipped me $100 after a dinner he had with some friends on Christmas Eve in 2000. What a nice man. I wish I had gone to ask for a job working for him. I'm a mechanic also.
STUNNING BEAUTIFUL THANKS YOU GOODNESS 🌟 DAPHNE COTTON ALWAYS 💜 AWESOME
Something topical - re: Ted Hope (filmmaking, producerial icon), - and his recent reference to Rothko - Me: "I had the privelage of shooting an environmental portrait ol Leon Berkowitz - fhe "Father" of the "Washington Color School" "Color Field" who was Rothko's mentor. The conceptual genesis will astound you. I believe I am one of the few who "heard it from the horse's mouth"' sort-of-speak. Not published anywhere. It all began on an Icelandick cliff"
He is ignored by the art world because art institutions cannot USE him to say our institution is not guilty of not showing Black artists. See, one cannot tell by looking at his work what ethic group he comes from nor does it say that Black people are oppress, which is the ONLY comment art institutions want art to make to its audience about minorities. All artists should be free to do the work they want and not be ignored because their work does not vindicated money making art institutions.
Fuck the Amish..! Animal abusers
We just painted Mailpouch on the side of our barn! Great video! Thanks
I posted about this on FB back in 2015 and the similarities. The problem has been around for a long time.
I just saw this movie for the first time last night, June 30. The clip from an hour 32 minutes into movie sounds all too familiar. I’d have liked to have seen this movie about the time Trump came down the escalator....not that it would have helped. So there’s nothing new under the sun....
I just saw this part of it on TV. I was shocked by how this seems to be happening now. Thanks to Donnie the traitor.
Sounds good to me!
They should maybe talk about the pedophilia that is rife and covered up in some of these amish communities. The most a man will get for impregnating his handicapped niece is two weeks of shunning because the old order see it to be more of a crime to report this to police, than to actual commit the crime. Bestiality is a big problem, as well as incest, because they dont teach sex education so young boys dont know how to express feelings when going through puberty so end up doing disgusting things to siblings. If you,re going to talk about the good and how hard working they are, you need to talk about the bad!!
You make a valid point except if you Google "Old Order Amish and Sexual abuse" I think you won't find a single reference dated before 1999 when this story was last broadcast. My site is clearly presenting archival videos from a bygone era (1980s/90s) and not pretending to be current.. As for the "good" and the "bad", I for one, would put neither label on the Amish. Many would find fault with their life style as we reported it. That said, I will try to revise my text introduction to the story to include mention of subsequent documentary and allegations. Take care. JG
Love him
This video makes me feel warm everytime I view it. Things like this are very important and can't be recreated. Thank you
My family and I live next to an auctioneer in New Holland, Lancaster PA. Last night my husband came back from old buddy's house with a beautifully framed print of Mt Rainier for a steal! I just had a chance now to look into the painting and the artist and I'm so excited to have found this video!! I've been googling her other works... what a gifted lady!! I feel blessed to have a piece of hers in our home!
Crazy seeing my Grandfather that young and in video ! What a gem of an interview
Thanks for writing. Happy to provide a flashback. FYI: so far 1,200 views of that story. Take care. JG
Is this the same..... Kroops that make... Kroops goggles?
Thanks for writing. Sorry, I don't know the answer. AM Kroop and Sons went out of business years ago, though I see their boots are being sold on eBay. Take Care. John G.
Her art is AMAZING. One of two American painters whom's works I collect. There is just something about her art work that speaks tot he soul.
Thank you for your comment that is right on. John G.
Greetings from London UK via Ireland ☘️ I recently found a copy of your book '' An Autobiography P Buckley Moss, The People's Artist ' in an Oxfam bookstore in Chiswick West London. A beautiful book, beautiful art, and life story.. God bless
Thank you for your comment from afar. Take Care.
George Gershwin said about Todd Duncan: “I love that man!”
A quote we missed. Thank you. John G.
@@americawhowereallyare6002 a great program! Thank you.
I have a photo of my father in law who was in Korea and who was awarded a Purple Heart. He is pictured in his Army uniform on this boat. He is with other Army/Navy guys. He, and others who would know, are deceased so we can’t ask him who he met on there. Interesting. They scrapped it.
My daughter lives near Amish community,i think of P B Moss Art, All of it makes me Smile.
Thank you for taking the time to write. Take Care. John G.
They don't call police they handle murder rape and incest and beastiality in the church some amish guy who ran away revealed it
Hard to believe that the statue came from one man, very committed individual who had alot to offer.
Great Video. Thank you from Eve Green San Raphael Ca.
Thank you for writing. Sorry we're late saying that. John G. and Jan.
Tom, thanks for the tribute to Mail Pouch Barns and Burma Shave. Harley, thanks for your work. Thanks Jan for the report! I'm 71. Lived in Buffalo, NY in the 50's & 60's. My Uncle, Eddie and Aunt Martha Nowak owned a 175 acre plot of land, on the top of the Hill, in Machias, NY from the mid 50's until he passed on in the late 80's / early 90's. Back when I was a little kid, we drove Route 16 all the way up from Buffalo, East Aurora, South Wales, Holland, Chaffee, Yorkshire, Delevan, Lime Lake, until reaching the Machias Town Hall. We saw many Mail Pouch barns along the way as well as a number of Burma Shave sayings along the road in the late 50's early 60's. For us city kids, it was always a treat to try to keep up with the Burma Shave signs. Great days for sure...
So glad you enjoyed. During all the years and through all the hundreds of stories, one of Jan and John Goldsmith's favorites. If you haven't already, check out "Past Times". JG
Missed this when you sent it. Many thanks for taking the time to comment. John G.
And now the old man (me) realizes he did respond.
Great story, John...and well told. I seem to recall another story about an old auto repair shop in Rockville, Reed Brothers maybe? Great seeing these videos again after a few decades. I was absolutely in awe of the work you and your team did on Capital Edition in the 1980's...and now the memories are flooding back! Although it's hazy to me now, I also recall a story that I believe you did about a junk dealer in Funkstown, Maryland. Really good stuff.
Thank you. One of my favorites.
I enjoyed this show when I was little. But my sister absolutely loved Ranger Hal. She was nine years older than me, but was mentally retarded with a mind equivalent to a five year old. You gave her so much joy. Thank you, Hal!
Oh, Richard WhorF. Misread it the first time.
Dear Ms. Pat Buckley Moss, I have been admiring your paintings since 1980's. You are ,indeed, like no one else...and you have been able to convey your vision of the world in the most charming way. Best wishes to you and your family. From Russia with love.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write. I have forwarded your comment to Ms. Moss at her web site. Take care. John O Goldsmith
And yet Progressive Democrats in 2022 can't see that this also shows this is the Biden (Obama/Soros) Administration which control major media and social media platforms; who have imprisioned Americans without swift trials or official charges against them for almost two years; with billionaire families running the country (Biden, Pelosi) who are embedded with the Chinese, Ukranian, Russian, Saudis; who is "owned" by dictators and is groveling to them for oil, medications, vaccines, computer chips, climate agreements, food; who has shut down free speech and discourse through government pressure on social media; who has forced mandated medical decisions causing people to lose their jobs and income; who has declared our Constitution as being “is always evolving slightly in terms of additional rights or curtailing rights.” He is also a facist as are his followers who believe we are to follow their ideals and beliefs without thinking or opinion or be shamed, called horrible names, removed from our jobs, and society. Facist thoughts don't go just one way, propaganda doesn't just go in one direction. The Progressive Left is as dangerous as the Far Right. Neither bode well for our country.
Prescient. Today's right-wing.
The more things change the more...
If you look at it objectively it is also today's left-wing.
You spelled Left Wing wrong
We have freedom of religion in America! The Amish are exercising that right! I have to respect the way they choose to live and it's advantages! For myself however this wouldn't work for me! The older order is to restrictive in how they view and treat women! I want freedom of choice and value that highly. To many people today don't appreciate it or abuse it!
Thank you for your comment. Staying on the right path seems to be more of a challenge in the internet age.
@@americawhowereallyare6002 I agree!🙂👍
