I get that you're partly kidding about the weight, but complaining that a Les Paul is heavy is kind of like complaining that there are vegetables in your salad.
I don’t quite agree, a lot of the retro les Paul’s as well as the expensive custom shop ones are close to 8lbs despite having no weight relief. Lower quality Gibson’s and Epiphone’s use “newer growth” mahogany that is much denser and heavier. Having played many les Paul’s from both Gibson and Epiphone, I can confidently say that having a 10lbs+ les Paul is completely obnoxious and downright uncomfortable. 9lbs starts to feel more manageable 8lbs is quite nice, lighter than that is usually because of some form of weight relief (drilling holes behind the maple cap).

When people demo guitars they should say what amp they are using, what the settings are and if they are using any effects , or if it's just clean channel and dirty channel... and if it's a les Paul knock off you have to include the sustain, other then if it's put together good i think that's the most important to anyone looking into a les Paul type guitar.
It's not a "knock Off" Gibson own Epiphone so this is a genuine more reasonably priced version of the Gibson Les Paul Standard. Some cost cutting of course has to be used but the main saving is building the Guitar out of the US and saving large amount of money on labour. The new Management at Gibson are to be credited with bring out the "Inspired by Gibson" range,

Magnets used (Alnico 2-5?) which magnets are in each pup? Rating of each pup? Which pots? Which caps? Which type of wiring and which size? Chrome or nickel hardware? Lacquer or poly finish? Intonation set in factory or did you set it? Which amp used in demo? Tube or solid state amp? Was it sunny or overcast the day of this demo? Sorry...that’s taking it too far! Just thought I’d ask. 😉
I have a epiphone les Paul standard also except my guitar is left handed like all my eight guitars I have mine going on 15 years or more and it still sounds great
About the headstock: still has the radical string splay between the nut and the tuning posts. Don’t like that. The angle is less than what it is on Gibson’s though so that’s good. I think it’s 13 degrees vs 17 on a Gibson.
Jimmy Paragallo Guitar I’ve got an Epi LP and a couple of SGs with the typical headstock design. Sure they’re nice looking but I do prefer headstock designs that allow the strings to go straight from the nut to the pegs without any crazy angles or tilts. Strat and tele type headstocks. That’s funny though because I don’t own one Fender guitar. Do have a few Kiesel guitars with body and headstock designs similar to teles and strats.
No dispute. They have an ungraded maple cap with a flamed veneer over that. Epiphone make no secret of that and it has been done by numerous brands for years to keep costs down but give nice aesthetics.
I just bought the bourbon burst. When I adjusted the neck to my liking, the nut of the truss rod was about an inch below the nut on the fret board. Doesn't matter I was able to lower the action to my preference. Wonder if that's normal. I call G.C., ofcourse they said it was. Yes it heavier than my PRS se. Both very good guitars.
I have 60's in bourbon burst. Sound is great fantastic is like Gibson. Easy to play confortable etc... Finish fantastic. Perfect tone for reggae, is my music. Heavy??. maybe, but this significant good wood jjj. 👍🏿🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲

Hmmmm, very difficult to decide anything however my biggest concern is QA on frets. Yours is good, but have seen several where frets were a mess. That's really holding me back. Remember that people like to jump on bandwagons and so are far more likely to post about bad frets than not having a problem just to get views to their video. Also remember these are guitars made from wood, sometimes they can leave the factory with a great setup, but need tweaking when they arrive at the store/customer because of changes in the humidity, temperature etc.
I've had Epiphones of all kinds but I've also had lower end Gibson les Paul's and such but mI always in the hunt for Gibsons ! I just traded a 72 Tele deluxe mim with a fender deluxe hard case and a Epiphone cherry burst les paul with a great hard case for a Gibson special faded SG and I'm so very happy ! I know I'll get my money back if I need too ! And before that I traded straight up a 97 mim black strat with case for a 2000 Gibson sg in antique white and gold trim !! Was I wrong !!?? Thanks !I would still buy me an Epi if a great deals would come about !!
My Epiphone LP Custom from 20 or so years ago looks much like this, it's a pretty sunburst with nice finish and good fret ends and all the measurements are nearly the same (20.4 23.4 43.o 52.0 56.2) it is almost 10 pounds too (too heavy) and it has a major scary crack on the back of the neck between the first and second fret. The only way I would ever buy another is if first it weighed less and was more comfortable, less square edges, and if you could promise me it wouldn't break in half.
nice guitar . all real Les Paul's are heavy. you can get a modern one if you want them to cut wood out for lightness. personally I like it heavy. I have a$ 3000.00 Gibson Les Paul and its heavy to. I also have this same guitar the Epiphone Les Paul 60s in bourbon burst and I love it . paid $635.00 for it and it sounds and looks just as beautiful as my Gibson Les Paul.

I just purchased one of the new sg standard '61 vintage cherry models, some of the best fret work I've ever seen on mine. I actually lowered the action below factory specs a little, no buzz at all, no truss rod adjustment needed. I commented on that vid you mention also. There is no filler between the body and the binding, the stain runs up about 1/64" onto the binding (just like on my neck), he should have looked closer before making that comment, that is not filler. Mine is totally a keeper, workmanship is over the top good. Shockingly good to be honest. I like a hotter pick up, but this thing sounds so good I'm not gonna change em, just crank up the gain a little more =P Sorry to here that other vid had a poor neck, mine is flawless.
@@LostMyMojo100 Lucas Fowler does one on a Gold top, at least 9 frets had to be fixed! Also on "The trogly's guitar show" channel he just bought a whole bunch of the new Epiphones and he is going to be reviewing them all, he also sells them for a little lower than the brand new price if you see one you want. Trogly is fast becoming none of the premiere Gibson channels, he takes them apart as well as playing demo's. In his first unboxing video of 5 of the new Epiphones he ordered, 4 of them had fret issues!! Lucas also did one on the new Epiphone Explorer and it had no fret issues. So that's 7 and only 2 seem OK, not a good average huh?

I figured if I get a structurally sound Epiphone I could always throw a set of Pearly Gates in there if I wasn't happy with the sound. I'll just wait and cherry pick until I find the right one. I got the Les Paul Classic a week ago. I played 3 of them in the store. None had dead notes, or fretbuzz, but fretends were a bit too sharp for my liking. Nothing dramatic, but certainly a point that needs to be adressed if you like them smooth. Other than that, quality control seemed fine on all 3 of them otherwise.

Mainly the pickups stand out as the biggest difference. The Standard 50's and 60's come with a ProBucker 2 in the neck, and ProBucker 3 in the bridge. The ProBuckers are very close to the Gibson BurstBuckers. These ProBuckers are Alnico 2. The Classics come with the Alnico 5. The Claasics also feature coil-splitting, allowing you to basically get single coil respnses from the humbuckers, offering more tonal possibilities. Though some I've known who played the Plus Top Pros found the coil-splitting more of a gimmick than a useful feature. Then again, those I know also have a single coil guitar like a Strat they play, so they don't make use of the coil-splitting very often at all. Personally, I own one of these 2020 Standard 60's in Iced Tea Burst. The review was pretty spot on. There is hardly any downside to this guitar. I kind of like the weight, so really I have no downside at all. The ProBuckers are just amazing for a guitar of this caliber. To get better, you would have to move to Gibsons. The fit and finish are beautiful. It's really hard to believe this is a Made in China guitar. Epiphone really stepped up their game and knocked one out of the park with this model.
That doesn't look like what's advertising on the new 2020 inspired by Gibson epiphone guitars there's supposed to be cts wiring harness and 50s wiring but that didn't look like either.
Same I am so annoyed because I just can’t make a desion I personally think the volume and tone nobs plus the Grover tuners look better on the 60s but the overall look of the 50s is better

The neck your describing sounds like the neck on an Epiphone SG I have. Amazing guitar but that’s how I feel about the neck m not that it’s a bad thing. It is different though.
Great review, First one I've seen where the electronics are actually shown. I was definitely curious as to whether the pots were CTS branded mini's or full size. You also cleared up the question of short or long neck tenon on the 60's by pulling the pickup. Also nice to see a decent thickness for the cap ( flame veneer aside)
@@sonicliberation I put some PRS locking tuners on my Custom 24 SE assuming it would need it but and stays in tune great, but I have left the stock tuners on my Standard SE and it actually stays in tune just as good. Maybe I got lucky, I don't know, but I'm actually happy with the stock ones. I agree about the nut, I did not change mine but I did take some nut slotting files to both of them as they were binding the strings. As for the pups, I go back and forth. I'm lucky enough to have a lot of guitars and kind of like having more choices when it comes to tone. They sound pretty good, could be better though but then it would sound like one of my other guitars.
@John Smith I think my Custom 24 SE Laurel Burl limited edition is one of the best looking guitars out there, but I care more about the feel and tone than anyway. I'd rather play guitar than look at them, but that's just me.

Thanks Eric. I started doing the review thing last year. On average, one review every two months. I'd like to do more this year. The longest I kept one was a year, the shortest was 1-2 months maybe. This is my first batch of Epiphones though. Right now the one I'm keeping is a Squier Tele (Red Sparkle) haha. I bought it for fun and to review, about 5 months ago, but right now I'm just digging it and haven't even gotten around to the review. Let's see what happens...

Im curious about these epiphones. But everyone pays for a real standard because they feel, and sound 10x better. For years epiphone has felt and looked like junk compared to gibson. Unlike fender. A classic vibe tele and a real USA 50s or 60s teles. Are all great guitars lol. Its crazy . gibson over charges compares to how much it costs to build one of their guitars. I have never understood why its so hard for them to make a great midrange guitar. If gibson charged 1300$ per les paul standard they would still be making money. But they have a lot of people in the process to pay. So im guessing it prob costs 300$ to build an epiphone.
I bet you a Million $$$$$$$ That you could send every part of a USA Gibson to the Epiphone plant and have them make one and they will sound different! Gibson allows Epiphone to make a LP guitar that looks very similar except for one thing...….Pickup placement. Epiphones always sound a bit muddier than a real Gibson. It's because the pickups are slightly moved toward the neck. If you look close at pics you can see it very easily especially at the bridge. Larger gap between bridge pup and bridge on the Epiphone. Gibson does the same thing on the Studio models. It's just not as much compared to the Epiphone. So, in other words the more expensive the guitar the closer to the bridge the pickups are.
@Adir Iakya Yes, the tone wood is not a huge difference over all but it is there. The higher gain players may never notice it. I have owned identical guitars even down to the same color and could hear a difference. It is not just the species of wood but just a different piece can sound different. My belief is that most of that difference is in the neck wood. I have a high end Ibanez guitar that I wore the frets down on. So, I found another neck on Ebay that had good frets and put that one on. It didn't sound the same. It lost some mojo. I sent the original neck off to have the frets replaced. As soon as I put that original neck back on, there it was, the mojo was back! BTW, I am not knocking on Epiphone guitars. If you find a good one then great! I use to own an Epi LP custom. It sounded and played very well. Only thing I didn't like about it was that I could feel the frets wearing out with every vibrato/bend. I currently own 3 Gibson LPs ( Traditional, Classic and Studio). They each have their own thing going. For vintage LP tones the Traditional does that very well. For classic rock to hard rock the Classic is the winner and for metal on an LP, the Studio with it's bridge pup closer to the neck does that excellently.
Lol, "it's heavy" - Umm yeah, 60's style... yup it would be heavy! If it wasn't then it wouldn't actually be a 60's style right? I have three 10 + pound Les Paul's, I don't see what all the fuss is about, lol then again I only play sitting down. I really want the new Custom in white but since it's a 50's style there is no maple cap, just a solid mahogany body, with carved top of course. I think I would really miss the maple so I am hesitant on getting it. Plus all of the fret issues these are seeming to have is also making me a bit leery, I can fix high frets if I needed to, but I shouldn't have to on a brand new guitar!
Great comments! Thanks Ron. I've heard about some of the fret issues on these. Happy that I didn't come across them in this example. I have a few more things on the way from Epiphone, so we'll see how consistent they are when it comes to quality. I agree with you, I don't really like working on a new guitar when we pay these prices. I'm prepared to when I buy a cheap project, but not on something like this.

I haven't decided on the wood species yet but when I do I think I am going to go with a design like an Explorer or an Iceman. I like those body styles and I wouldn't have to try and get the top carved just right if I was to try an d make a Les Paul style lol.

they will never ever put a Gibson headstock on an epiphone for the main simple reason that there will be unscrupulous people out there getting Gibson headstock veneer is putting on Epiphone Zen trying to sell them as Gibson
@@mikebaird6788 Your wrong Mike, Epiphone was producing Les Pauls some years ago with the Gibson open book headstocks. I believe they were the models made in Japan, but I'm not 100% sure of their origin of manufacture. If you follow some of the boards you will see them pop up from time to time. Unfortunately, Gibson has still not completely pulled their heads out of their a$$es.

Yeah ,, even with the old kalamazoo head they still look like canoe paddles to me.
All Epiphone Les Pauls have a 14 degree headstock.

There were some so high on the frets the B and E came choked out from the factory lol

Also on "The trogly's guitar show" channel he just bought a whole bunch of the new Epiphones and he is going to be reviewing them all, he also sells them for a little lower than the brand new price if you see one you want. Trogly is fast becoming none of the premiere Gibson channels, he takes them apart as well as playing demo's. In his first unboxing video of 5 of the new Epiphones he ordered, 4 of them had fret issues!! Lucas also did one on the new Epiphone Explorer and it had no fret issues. So that's 7 and only 2 seem OK, not a good average huh?

I've been thinking about getting a Les Paul and I refuse to pay for an over priced Gibson. I figured if I get a structurally sound Epiphone I could always throw a set of Pearly Gates in there if I wasn't happy with the sound. I'll just wait and cherry pick until I find the right one. I saw a video about Japanese made Greco LP's where the guy said the QC was very good. I'm in no rush so I'll shop around... Thanks!
I got the Les Paul Classic a week ago. I played 3 of them in the store. None had dead notes, or fretbuzz, but fretends were a bit too sharp for my liking. Nothing dramatic, but certainly a point that needs to be adressed if you like them smooth. Other than that, quality control seemed fine on all 3 of them otherwise.
Could you explain the difference between the standard and classic epiphone les paul, I'm looking at getting one, but I dont understand the difference. Is one better than the other? Thanks (:
Mainly the pickups stand out as the biggest difference. The Standard 50's and 60's come with a ProBucker 2 in the neck, and ProBucker 3 in the bridge. The ProBuckers are very close to the Gibson BurstBuckers. These ProBuckers are Alnico 2.
The Classics come with the Alnico 5. The Claasics also feature coil-splitting, allowing you to basically get single coil respnses from the humbuckers, offering more tonal possibilities. Though some I've known who played the Plus Top Pros found the coil-splitting more of a gimmick than a useful feature. Then again, those I know also have a single coil guitar like a Strat they play, so they don't make use of the coil-splitting very often at all.
Personally, I own one of these 2020 Standard 60's in Iced Tea Burst. The review was pretty spot on. There is hardly any downside to this guitar. I kind of like the weight, so really I have no downside at all. The ProBuckers are just amazing for a guitar of this caliber. To get better, you would have to move to Gibsons. The fit and finish are beautiful. It's really hard to believe this is a Made in China guitar. Epiphone really stepped up their game and knocked one out of the park with this model.

That doesn't look like what's advertising on the new 2020 inspired by Gibson epiphone guitars there's supposed to be cts wiring harness and 50s wiring but that didn't look like either.

Same I am so annoyed because I just can’t make a desion I personally think the volume and tone nobs plus the Grover tuners look better on the 60s but the overall look of the 50s is better

I've been looking at this and the modern but I have heard a lot of horror stories about the fret work qc. Has anyone bought one recently? Has it gotten better?

The neck your describing sounds like the neck on an Epiphone SG I have. Amazing guitar but that’s how I feel about the neck m not that it’s a bad thing. It is different though.

Everything but the dipped in plastic looking finish seems spot on to me.
Poly is quick ,cheap and a very durable finish. You can take some fine sand paper and matt the finish on the neck and it won't be as slick.

Great review, First one I've seen where the electronics are actually shown. I was definitely curious as to whether the pots were CTS branded mini's or full size. You also cleared up the question of short or long neck tenon on the 60's by pulling the pickup. Also nice to see a decent thickness for the cap ( flame veneer aside)
This is the "transitional" tenon, no? Seems to be "long" on the 50s series.
Better off with a PRS Standard 24 SE for $500 new. Better quality and doesn't need fret leveling right off the bat.
I would still change the pickups, tuners and nut on an SE.
@@sonicliberation I put some PRS locking tuners on my Custom 24 SE assuming it would need it but and stays in tune great, but I have left the stock tuners on my Standard SE and it actually stays in tune just as good. Maybe I got lucky, I don't know, but I'm actually happy with the stock ones. I agree about the nut, I did not change mine but I did take some nut slotting files to both of them as they were binding the strings. As for the pups, I go back and forth. I'm lucky enough to have a lot of guitars and kind of like having more choices when it comes to tone. They sound pretty good, could be better though but then it would sound like one of my other guitars.
@John Smith I think my Custom 24 SE Laurel Burl limited edition is one of the best looking guitars out there, but I care more about the feel and tone than anyway. I'd rather play guitar than look at them, but that's just me.

As a newcomer to your channel, here's something I'd like to know. do you always buy one of these guitars just long enough to leave a review like this, then try to sell it? How many have you purchased, reviewed and sold? Have you kept one ever?
Thanks Eric. I started doing the review thing last year. On average, one review every two months. I'd like to do more this year. The longest I kept one was a year, the shortest was 1-2 months maybe. This is my first batch of Epiphones though.
Right now the one I'm keeping is a Squier Tele (Red Sparkle) haha. I bought it for fun and to review, about 5 months ago, but right now I'm just digging it and haven't even gotten around to the review. Let's see what happens...

I'd get this instead of a studio or a tribute, at least if you plan to buy it new. I will probably sell my LP studio after getting the 50s standard.

Im curious about these epiphones. But everyone pays for a real standard because they feel, and sound 10x better. For years epiphone has felt and looked like junk compared to gibson. Unlike fender. A classic vibe tele and a real USA 50s or 60s teles. Are all great guitars lol. Its crazy . gibson over charges compares to how much it costs to build one of their guitars. I have never understood why its so hard for them to make a great midrange guitar. If gibson charged 1300$ per les paul standard they would still be making money. But they have a lot of people in the process to pay. So im guessing it prob costs 300$ to build an epiphone.
I bet you a Million $$$$$$$ That you could send every part of a USA Gibson to the Epiphone plant and have them make one and they will sound different! Gibson allows Epiphone to make a LP guitar that looks very similar except for one thing...….Pickup placement. Epiphones always sound a bit muddier than a real Gibson. It's because the pickups are slightly moved toward the neck. If you look close at pics you can see it very easily especially at the bridge. Larger gap between bridge pup and bridge on the Epiphone. Gibson does the same thing on the Studio models. It's just not as much compared to the Epiphone. So, in other words the more expensive the guitar the closer to the bridge the pickups are.

@Adir Iakya Yes, the tone wood is not a huge difference over all but it is there. The higher gain players may never notice it. I have owned identical guitars even down to the same color and could hear a difference. It is not just the species of wood but just a different piece can sound different. My belief is that most of that difference is in the neck wood. I have a high end Ibanez guitar that I wore the frets down on. So, I found another neck on Ebay that had good frets and put that one on. It didn't sound the same. It lost some mojo. I sent the original neck off to have the frets replaced. As soon as I put that original neck back on, there it was, the mojo was back! BTW, I am not knocking on Epiphone guitars. If you find a good one then great! I use to own an Epi LP custom. It sounded and played very well. Only thing I didn't like about it was that I could feel the frets wearing out with every vibrato/bend. I currently own 3 Gibson LPs ( Traditional, Classic and Studio). They each have their own thing going. For vintage LP tones the Traditional does that very well. For classic rock to hard rock the Classic is the winner and for metal on an LP, the Studio with it's bridge pup closer to the neck does that excellently.
Adir Iakya I’d say you would notice it more with an acoustic guitar. So many other things factor into the tone of an electric

Lol, "it's heavy" - Umm yeah, 60's style... yup it would be heavy! If it wasn't then it wouldn't actually be a 60's style right? I have three 10 + pound Les Paul's, I don't see what all the fuss is about, lol then again I only play sitting down. I really want the new Custom in white but since it's a 50's style there is no maple cap, just a solid mahogany body, with carved top of course. I think I would really miss the maple so I am hesitant on getting it. Plus all of the fret issues these are seeming to have is also making me a bit leery, I can fix high frets if I needed to, but I shouldn't have to on a brand new guitar!
Great comments! Thanks Ron. I've heard about some of the fret issues on these. Happy that I didn't come across them in this example. I have a few more things on the way from Epiphone, so we'll see how consistent they are when it comes to quality.
I agree with you, I don't really like working on a new guitar when we pay these prices. I'm prepared to when I buy a cheap project, but not on something like this.
A friend of mine song dad made him a custom Les Paul from scratch at home made out of 100% Walnut it weighed 15 pounds so I guess that's a light

I haven't decided on the wood species yet but when I do I think I am going to go with a design like an Explorer or an Iceman. I like those body styles and I wouldn't have to try and get the top carved just right if I was to try an d make a Les Paul style lol.
Ron Just Ron Hills isn't carved top but his dad made it in his basement has all the equipment and bought all the stencils and all of the necessary things like that
Ron Just Ron they say walnut has a real bright sound and it sure did sound like that but I work at a sawmill anyway as a security guard so I have access to a lot of Walnut that's thrown away that could still be usable
The head stock is still ugly because its too big and fat. Just put the Gibson head stock on these Epiphones already.

they will never ever put a Gibson headstock on an epiphone for the main simple reason that there will be unscrupulous people out there getting Gibson headstock veneer is putting on Epiphone Zen trying to sell them as Gibson
@@mikebaird6788 Your wrong Mike, Epiphone was producing Les Pauls some years ago with the Gibson open book headstocks. I believe they were the models made in Japan, but I'm not 100% sure of their origin of manufacture. If you follow some of the boards you will see them pop up from time to time. Unfortunately, Gibson has still not completely pulled their heads out of their a$$es.
