I have an Epiphone ES175 Premium, in terms of tone and playability it is 99.9% equivalent of the Gibson at a price far lower. Made in Korea these are sadly no longer in production. I was hoping they’d do a 335 Premium but it never happened.

My current favourite is the 60s standard lp. I went in to a store to goal set and my wife actually gave me the go ahead to pull the trigger on the gibson if I wanted...but playing back to back I seriously couldn't justify the price hike. The 60s epiphone as you said stands on its own really really well.

Epiphone has REALLY stepped up their game!!! I've spent time with all the new models and not a bad one in the bunch! As far as electric guitars, I would NEVER buy a Gibson when Epiphone matches and even in some instances BEATS Gibson's build quality.

Yeah Um not for me. My epi looks very nice but not even close to my studio and especially my custom. Fret sprout will slice your hand. Maybe I got a bad one but of the 3 I’ve had they don’t come close to any of my Gibsons. I would like to try the profacy series though.

@@wammons007nteresting ive had an epi 50s for over 3 years and not even a slight issue with frets or anything else to that point.
Gibson definitely has a nicer finish and the burst buckers are always going to have an edge but their QC has been dropping noticeably in recent years while EPI is picking up.
And I certainly hope a Custom shop would be better than an Epiphone standard for 10x the price lol.
Epi customs are so good now can’t justify the extra 5-6k for a gibson custom

Recently bought the Sheraton Pro II, it's brilliant. The pickups in split coil mode are also very usable as they are nice sounding. It's so so comfortable to play, something about the neck is different to all my other guitars and for me, I can play it for hours without feeling strained. I had to set it up to my taste as the string height from the store was too high.

    Epiphone Les Paul Modern.
Great frets to start with - in an ebony fingerboard - Asymmetrical mahogany neck - Recessed/contoured heel - Probucker pickups - Weight relieved body - Solid maple top (over 1/2 inch thick) - Locking tuners - GraphTech NuBone nut - Coil splitting and phase. Super price point - great bang-for-the-buck!

There aren't many options for lefties out there but I found a lightly used translucent red 2013 Epiphone SG pro a few years ago and it's badass. After I did a setup adjusting the action and pickup heights, as well as a little fret polishing, I can't imagine there's a sweeter guitar for the money.

Everything Shane Said Is True (At Least About My Guitar). The Craftsmanship, The Feel, The Playability, The Sound... ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL!!!! WELL DONE, GIBSON/EPIPHONE!!! This Guitar Brought Me Full Circle In My Musical Life Because The High School Guitar Legend Of My Youth Had One (40 Years Ago, Real Gibson) That All The Noobs Were Drooling Over. Back Then, I Found It Difficult To Play A Gibson (A Friend Had A Cherry Burst Copy He Let Me Borrow For A While) Due To The Body Shape. I Guess I Just Had To Grow Into It (After Being A Stratocaster Man All My Life) Because I TOTALLY LOVE My Goldtop & Feel Complete Now.

    Great list...!
Some of the ones you have I'm seriously looking into acquiring, the Prophecy Series in particular...V and LP.
Two Epi's that are deserving to be on this list...the Sheraton II and the 59' Les Paul Standard. I have both of these, and they are just in a different class.
The Sheraton II, is probably closer to the Gibson ES-355, with its added detail, craftsmanship, finish and over all playability and comfort, it is one of those guitars that can do it all and is almost impossible to put down.
The second, the 59' Standard LP, is the guitar that can make me put down the Sheraton for awile. While it has all of the classic traits, accurate neck profile and weight...its the electronics that set it apart. She is hand wired with Gibson Burstbuckers, CTS pots, Mallory capacitors and Switchcraft switching, there is nothing to upgrade here with the possible exception of hardware down the road. The tone of this guitar is amazing...!!
It will be interesting to see how Epiphones Signature Series guitars will stack up for this year. The Emily Wolf Sheraton is a joy to play. We're already hearing good things about the Brendon Small Ghosthorse and the Jared James Custom LP. Down the road is the Epi version of BB King's Lucille to be released this fall, and we'll see if Gibson pulls the trigger in the Alex Lifeson Signature LP.
All in all...an excellent year for Epiphone..!!

    Whew....!
I was kinda worried because I was under the impression you started out with the best Epiphone ( LP 60's Model).
I was happily relieved when you ended with the 50's LP Model when you announced it as your favorite, then I had realized it was 5,4,3,2, and 1 lol..!
I happen to have this Epiphone 50's model Lp and I love it because the Neck is a bit chunky, but feels great. This one sounds better than my Cherry stain LPJ by Gibson which is a full body LP without the Pickguard, and small cosmetic features of the standard LP's by gibson. I love that they went back to the more traditional headstock which resembles Gibson's own tather than the older uglier ones they had.
I am in the market for a new Epiphone, and while I was kinda looking into the 60's LP because I heard it has hotter pickups, I didn't know until this video that it features a thinner neck which my smaller hands might like (I'm more a Stratocaster player myself) but also am really interested in the new SG as I've never owned or played one.
I might go with the SG, maybe in the Cherry, but the white ones looks really good too.
Great video, and I love the fact you're a fellow Lefty!
    Cheers!

Well, some of those sound weird because the guy is holding it upside down lol
I used to own 2 Gibson LPs. Then, in 94 my kids bought me an Epi LP (Korean)for Father’s Day. I’ve been a session player for 4 decades, and they wanted me to have something not so valuable laying around the house to play with. It played SO much better than the gibsons. I put Duncan PAFs in it, switchcraft pots and switch, and a set of NOS ‘58 caps in it.
I now guard this Epi with my life. It’s my go to. Sold the gibsons, and this ‘cheap’ Epi now lives with all of my other guitars. Gimme an Epi any day.
Just picked up a used custom pro LP in koa today. We’ll see how she does.

I came back the next day after thinking it over and bought it. Epiphone has changed the headstock to the smaller 1960s style and upgraded the tuning machines, pickups, control pots, wiring, bridge and stop bar tailpiece and bridge. I owned 335 by Epiphone in the year of 2013 with PAF's and that instrument never lied at rehearsal or even the gigs. Had to sale due to financial but it was worth the money I invested. Only thing I ever did was tighten the input back and readjust strings for my playing. For quality, just worth ever cent I spent on that Red Epiphone bought at Tarpley's in Amarillio, Texas. Sorry those pickups were P90's. Not putting down Gibspn, which now own 1991 Led Paul model by Gibson.

Ever heard or played a Wilshire? That's hands down the best Epi (electric solidbody) ever, IMHO.
And I'm talking about the Indonesia made reissues!

I'm an Epiphone fan and have quite a few. I think my favorite has to be my Riviera P93 goldtop. Take off the metal covers and the P90s are great. Three P90s = endless fun.

I do believe Epiphone has stepped up its game and is making some nice guitars.

Epi Casino Elitist. Just magic. So well built (flawless), plays and sounds so good, with American metal-covered dog-ear P-90s, hardware, and electronics. I did exchange the bridge for a '59 TOM 'cause I had one in my parts box and it slipped right onto the posts, all else is stock. It's made in the Terada factory in Japan, known since 1912 for quality guitar and instrument manufacturing. This is also where many Gretsches are made. This Casino is one of my best guitars.
You really don't need to peel for a more expensive guitar. The new Epiphones are great.

Since I have the TV yellow special, that’s my favorite Epiphone, but if I wanted any of the other ones I would go with the 50s LP because it is very true to the original ones made by Gibson. Sure, poly not nitro finish, but any other comparison is nit picking IMO. I dunno about anyone else, but I don’t have 4 grand to spend on the Gibson. Great reviews Shane.

    • @SionynJones
      @SionynJones 2 года назад

Epiphone is just as much as Gibson as a Gibson. Nitro is something that puts me off Gibson not just for the environmental concerns but also because it's inferior to poly in the sense that continually degrading yellows and looks nasty after few years even when taken care of.
That said it dose look cool on some finishes like the yellowing amber of binding on Les Paul custom set a beautiful contrast against back beauty.

I got an Epiphone 12 string acoustic a few years ago and it is just fine. Sounds great, plays great. I took some of the pieces of cardboard out from under the saddle to lower the action and now the action is perfect. Only knocks are that I had to have a pick up installed and the pegs are kind of cheap.

Not all of them, you see sometimes people find a few rare exceptions here and there, the beginning of 1960 i think they still had not made the change so a guitar launched in the early 1960s might have had the standard kluson tuners, where as a guitar in late 1960 might have come out with grover tuners because they made the change halfway through the year, its the same as a precision bass, (sorry if i get the info wrong its been more then 5 years) 1955 i believe was the year they added a belly cut to the famous "telecaster" bass but it wasnt much later until late 1955 that they implemented the body contours, same with the big change that came in a 1958 fender precision bass, they change it to the famous P bass style pickup we all know and love today but some guitars in 1958 still have the old look is just that somewhere in 1958 they changed to the other version and thats how that happens

My fav (our only Epi lol) My daugter's 2003 LP studio. One of the pots/pups has failed. It might only be wiring, but since I have to get in there anyway I am replacing to full sized pots and Seynour Duncan pups. It is one of our cheaper guitars, but I pick it up every practice because of it's playability and now it is going to sound like much more expensive Epi.
