If they would rerelease this phone again with updated internals, bigger battery, double front facing stereo speakers, and same screen size, I would buy it in a heartbeat!!!
What I wonder is if those infrared sensors can be disabled. With the number of them and how active they appear to be, that could also be causing some notable battery drain.
Finally! The review I was waiting for. The things MKBHD said resonated well with me and I know I will love it...but that darn battery! Why Motorola Mobility? Why did you deprive us like that??
Malcolm Cosenza 2.5 hours screen time is still short battery life regardless. I typically use between 3-4 hours screen time on my HTC One M8 on a daily basis.
I almost always get a day plus on my battery so I'm hoping the tiny bump in size covers the screen upgrade and I'll be OK. What got me more concerned was the comment on the leather backs. But I'm still hyped can't wait to get mine _it's being assembled btw_
It's an amazing phone. I loved it for the 2yrs I used it. I would've used it even longer but sadly I broke the screen which is too expensive to repair. IT WAS AN AMAZING PHONE
Hey MKBHD, to this date this remains my favorite phone review. It was this video that convinced me to buy the 2014 moto x, which I'm still convinced was the best phone ever made. I've since upgraded my phone, but I still come back and watch this video from time to time just for fun. Thanks!
My tablet stopped playing the review once he said "Ok Google Now" - and launched Google Now. Dammit Marques, you can't just say that on RUclips! You triggered half of my apartment!
Love how unbiased your reviews are. I tried to get this phone on cyber Monday but waited too long for the discount, so now I'm doing a lot of research before buying. If the nexus 6 wasn't a boat I would strongly consider it, I had the 4 it was amazing! My 1st gen moto x is getting old tho and I don't think I can leave the functional features I've gotten used to. The twist camera, talking to it without touching it, quick notifications, that's why I love this phone is all the cool features you actually everyday, they aren't gimmicks
I have a GS3 right now and I'm upgrading in a month and I'm stuck between the moto x and Note 4. My GS3 lags quite a bit plus the battery life isn't great plus I'm not a fan of touchwiz. I like the motox but battery life is a concern and Note 4 battery looks to be great as well as the specs. Also I will probably slap Google play launcher on the Note 4 if I get it.
theeboredone Nope, flagships too. Once a new flagship is out, they don't care about their 6 month old flagship anymore. Personal experience from owning an Xperia Z. Kitkat arrived in May this year and it was unusable, crap battery life, crap performance and reception bugs.
It has poor display (very low brightness, bad color accuracy, old AMOLED tech instead of new one), bad camera, bad battery (2 hours on screen time? Wow!), even cheaper Moto G has stereo speakers and better camera than X. Oh boy a phone with so many compromises. At least on HTC One M8 you have to make two compromises only i.e. color accuracy and camera.
Yes you are right and your point is valid but these days HTC One M8 is also cheaper than it's launch price and one can find it around 520-525 mark easily but then one might argue that it is more than 5 month old phone whereas Moto X (2014) sounds new although it have similar specs and in some cases worse specs (display, front facing stereo speakers etc.) I think Motorola has once again priced the Moto X higher than what it should be. They did similar sort of mistake last year and sale did not improved until they reduced the price. Sorry for my bad grammar :-)

ok...about to point out all the inconsistencies in these expert reviews lol The first thing I noticed is about the Moto X that as weird and awkwardly looking the successor is, it actually looks better. The S4 launched with this same feature, but they extended it to allow for other things (like being able to swipe pictures in your gallery) and it was terribly bashed as a gimmick. Hell, I can get a quick glance of my notifications on my Note 3 and I think it's a neat feature. Comes in handy when I'm cooking and don't want to wash my hands just to see info on my phone. Gotta love those gimmicks. And of course, a mediocre battery and camera are only trade offs. They increased the screen size and utilized a Full HD display, with the same battery from last year....yeah good luck with that. They could have at least added software to improve battery life like GS5, M8, and OPO. 2.5 hours of SOT is a joke. And I'm not even going to discuss the camera. I've seen pictures of the Moto G stand toe to toe with the new X. Look, I personally think the X will be another solid phone. I personally like MKBHD, but I'm pointing out the inconsistencies that exist in these "expert" tech reviews. They criticize these same things on other devices, yet praise them elsewhere. IJS.... Oh and btw, the Moto X is priced well and aggressively, but I have personally seen people purchase a other devices for the same $99 on contract or even free...and with some of the carriers offering customers the ability to jump between devices it's not an issue.....unless you pay full retail for the device upfront. Just my POV.
Moto x 2013 had a horrible camera when first released, however now it is MUCH better. The battery was upgraded, however only by 100 mah Just thought i'd point that out.
Tierre Jevon nothing like the m8 or lg g3 but still way better than when it was first released. Yes they could and should improve the camera and battery and then it would be a dream phone... Which is why I might get the new nexus...
M Amos that's all I'm saying. I'm not even dissing the phone. I already stated that it is a solid phone. I'm just pointing out how one phone can be criticized and how another can be praised for the same things.
Alright I am trying to decide between the moto x 2014 version and the HTC one m8. The moto x is 500 dollars and the HTC one m8 is 600. Is the HTC worth the extra 100 in the long run or should I save the 100 and go with the moto x. Keep in mind that this will be my first smartphone. I like both of them but I wanted some other opinions. Thanks
I would choose the Htc, because its overall better than the Moto X. The only downside on the Htc one is that the camera is dam awful. If your in it for the camera choose the Moto X, If you want a good built quality, better battery life, and faster phone choose the Htc One.
Space_____ _____BAR do you think the HTB one mini 2 (HTC one remix) would be another alternative? Between the moto x and the htc mini what would you choose?
If you have a ps4 or plan on buying one get the xperia z3 since it will support remote play(you can play your ps4 on your phone). But if you're just looking for the better smartphone experience it's the Moto x all the way OR you can wait a little bit longer and get the NEXUS 6(NEXUS X) that's coming out very SOON and it's going to be a beast.
It's been a 9 year when I was a 13 years old child, I like this phone I downloaded this video and watch daily although my English was very poor and I subscribed mkbhd my earlier subscription since when I started using RUclips.😌
I have a nexus 5 and while it is a very good phone (my best phone ever) I would personally wait for the Nexus 6 which is probably going to be a lot better with a cheap price.
Internal memory in phones are getting bigger so no need for a sd card slot while is not as reliable or fast, not to mention cloud storage they give it to you might as well use it; and removable battery, meh as long as the device gets you a full days of usage then what's there to complain about really? Shouldn't be a major concern unless you travel a lot and need a replaceable backup battery.
TheMusketITuckedIt Cloud storage way slower and I don't have 24/7 wifi coverage and my plan is only 1GB. I have a class ten SD card and it's perfectly fast and reliable. It might be different on paper but I haven't noticed anything negative in day to day use. As for the battery I plan on using the phone for over 2 years and after that time period the battery health decreases significantly and you can just buy a new one and pop it in.
I like how Moto X withstood the bend test better than any other phone, just confirms Marques' opinion on build quality. I, personally, love metal phones.
Saugat Singha Pocketnow are quite good at this type of thing with their "after the buzz" series. They did one for the moto x 2014. But I agree, I think more reviewers should do this!
I remember having the bamboo and white model, my first real big boy smart phone. The speakers, the shortcuts, the build, the clean look. It sadly fell 7 feet off of an industrial fridge.
It's just a comparison considering the specs and software of the machines. i would guess €0-€200(moto g/e) = low end €300 -€500= mid range(nexus 5) €500> high end(HTC One m8, iphone)
There's a reason the US is the US. Hate it or love it, America is America. As a Chinese, I fully understand why he said what he said even I know majority of my fellow countrymen would have a comfortable living for 499 USD a month. There people just have different bars for this kind of stuff. Bill Gates or Warren Buffet may consider a private jet as a staple, but for the majority of the world it's beyond imagination. Whether something is "high end" or not really depends on the proportion of your income it takes...
MKBHD your reviews on phones is by far the best..I have seen so many of your videos. Great going..I am hoping that the ONE PLUS ONE will announce a date for India..I have been using IOS for 2-3 years and am a bit fed up of the monotony..
Hey Marques, i was using an iphone 5c and after watching your review on the new moto x i decided to change. Great video, and im loving the motox (2014). Its my first time using an android phone, i always had an iphone. Thanks, and keep these videos coming. Best reviews ive watched.
Probably not, but I'm hoping for that! Anyway, if it doesn't update for the Android 7.0, Cyanomgenmod made a ROM for it, but it's in proccess, because there are some bugs in the camera... But it will be probably good before the next year...
I get updates on my moto x 2nd gen but the updates did not upgrade to 7.0. I got 2 updates recently but I'm on 6.0. It might take a couple of months ( maybe years ) to get an upgrade because most phones take a long time for it to be upgradable.
supermike980 This Moto X's gets 2.5hr - 3h screen on time according to Marques. The Z3C on the other hand is getting around 8hr apparently, I expect the full sized Z3 to be quite impressive as well. (maybe slightly less due to larger and higher res display). The battery on this phone is a deal breaker, along with the camera, and lack of microSD expansion.
That dimple is actually supposed to move around like that. Yep, i checked many at different stores and it actually feels quite nice the way it adjusts for your finger basically.
Oneplus one for a better battery. Moto x for an easier and better overall Android experience. I wouldn't wordt about performance because they both have a snapdragon 801 and both run really smoothly.
I have been using the motox one couldnt be more happier as it is not about the specs but always about the experience. The fluidity in which the phone performs is simply unmatched
***** It's actually the EXACT opposite. Everyone 'hates' Verizon because they are overpriced and take advantage of the consumer. However, they offer the best* coverage and when other carriers can't compete in certain areas, people settle and can justify paying the higher prices. Coverage really depends on the area, I'd argue that the favorite provider of the people is T-Mobile, just because of all the drama Legre, their CEO, is creating in the industry. They have a fantastic plan, just not the coverage yet. I want to love T-Mobile, but 2G and having to go outdoors to send or receive a text message was too much of a hassle, again, experiences vary upon location.
Why are these phones getting so big? What happened to using a phone with one hand? Seems like Motorola and Apple have joined the herd of mega phones. It's really uncomfortable to use a phone with two hands. If someone is looking for a phone that fits in their hand then the penalty is lower specs. What gives?? Why don't they make mini versions that have the same specs for many of us that don't want to carry a TV in our pockets or up against our faces.
I think the problem is that the better specs require bigger components, so the better specs wouldn't be achievable on a smaller phone. Unless it was monstrously thick.
Hey Marcus.. This is really funny.. Every time you say "ok google" in this video, my phone responds to it by opening google now. At first I didn't get what's happening and I thought it was some bug. So I replayed the video again the same thing happened whenever you that phrase. 😂
+Petter Vosvel They make the best phones on the market arguably. Not Iphones. Apple copies everything that Samsung does. The Galaxy phones are superior to Iphones in every way. But if you like small asian children who work in huge factories that have toxic materials everywhere building your phone - Iphone is the choice for you.
Lucas Alegre Mines battery life isn't great, had some early shut off issues. Switched to a 6p in January just I just shattered and then extra shattered it (pretty much dead now, purple liquid (ink?) bleeding from the inside down). Honestly going back to this phone, it's still really, snappy camera has never been great, and the battery is doable. I do miss having hat fast charging though. Overall still a great phone.
Love my Moto X 2nd Gen. Bought it on moto maker. White front with metallic orange accents, and football leather back. It's great looking, and does what I need it to do. Battery life is barely OK though.
To say the speaker is better than average is an understatement. It is just flat out awesome. It got really good bass, almost got loud enough to block out the music in my parents car, plus all phones should have front facing speakers.
"Ok, Jarvis"-- lol, was not expecting that. You're definitely a tech nerd, but in a good way. Good review, man. It's disappointing that the battery life isn't better on the Moto X. Can't wait for the Note 4 review.
Hey MKBHD.. I really love all your videos and I am a huge fan.. Can you talk about your daily driver apps perhaps.. like your music player, music streaming app, games, social, launcher, etc.. just your favourite stuff.. Even though it could be long video, I, for one, would love to see your most used apps and "what's on your phone"!
I think with the Motorola dimple on the back they should install a finger print sensor in it so right when you hold it you can put your finger on it to unlock it.
Great review! I enjoyed it. You have a fluent way of explaining the pros & cons of what you are reviewing without falling into any fanboyism at all. The only video of yours that I found disappointing was the one about the Beats algorithm in the HTC One M7 which was just plain wrong - I explained why in the comments, and I would have expected you to ask an audio engineer what an exciter & a compressor really do. But in any case, overall great work!
I bought the MotoX about 4 months ago from AT&T and originally I wanted an iPhone but I am eventually voting for this phone. It's not a bad phone at all. I was only able to get a 16 gig version but I was able to get a nice cheap accessory, the SanDisk ultra that gave me extra 32 gigs of space so I can listen to my music.
When you said "okay Google Now" the video paused and my phone went to Google Now...

It's funny how reviewers praise manufacturers on keeping Android simple while at the same time fault Apple on having a simple OS...
Simple meaning open? Then yes it is. Users have been able to make it their own and indeed do so.
poeglives Easily
They're using the word "simple" in two different ways. Ios is a stripped down simple, while stock Android is called simple due to its minimalism.
Philitron128 You seem to be confusing yourself. People also describe iOS as minimalistic...
SImple meaning making it easy to do what you want with the software. Making it easy to customize.

Garett Smith i would choose the moto x over both of the devices you mentioned
Vafa Mohammadramezanizadeh is there a reason?
Just curious
When will the xperia z3 review be out? Deciding between that and this phone.
I'm also waiting for the Z3 compact. Unlike the new Moto X, it's actually compact, the battery lasts over 2 days and costs less.
It's been a 9 year when I was a 13 years old child, I like this phone I downloaded this video and watch daily although my English was very poor and I subscribed mkbhd my earlier subscription since when I started using RUclips.😌
iPhone 6 unbiased review Marques!
I support this request!
I'm getting a new phone soon and after watching this I'm now stuck between the Nexus 5 and this...which should I buy and why?
probably the iphone 6 plus
you fucking what m8 say it to my face and not online
Get the Nexus 5. :) Don't listen to Scott Clare . He's probably a brainwashed Apple fanboy.
Cheers guys
I have a nexus 5 and while it is a very good phone (my best phone ever) I would personally wait for the Nexus 6 which is probably going to be a lot better with a cheap price.
You didn't wake your phone at 5:16, but your just woke mine!
Wait for Nexus ... choice made easy after this review
Im really hating where phones are going. With non removable batteries and no sd card slot. The only option being left is samsung.
What? HTC, LG, and Sony also go for SD card slots.
Sd Slots AND removable battery.
LG G3
Here I am, after 8 years.. loved that phone, still do... Wasn't able to get one ever...
i kinda like the old moto x better, I mean spec-wise the new one is awesome but the something about the design...hmmm
all videos are good qualty and good shoot angel
I like how Moto X withstood the bend test better than any other phone, just confirms Marques' opinion on build quality. I, personally, love metal phones.
7:41 OOOOOOOOOOooooo dafuq is that on left
That's what a hot bitch's arm looks like. I hope it's a female......
jetpowered1 definitely the guy that broke his arm
***** why don't you make a video on "Moto X (2nd Gen) 2014 :Revisited !
It sadly fell 7 feet off of an industrial fridge.
you know you live in a fucked up world when 499 is not considered 'high end'. that's the average monthly salary in some countries ...
I actually prefer the original design the "M" is to big
i agree, the ring flash looks cheap and awful too.
burnzy3210 I agree, the dimple is too big also
I agree, the back of the phone looks awful also
MKBHD your reviews on phones is by far the best..I have seen so many of your videos. Great going..I am hoping that the ONE PLUS ONE will announce a date for India..I have been using IOS for 2-3 years and am a bit fed up of the monotony..
Damn, I want to watch, but not in 360p!
Yeah that 360p was killing me but the review was nice
There are no high specs phones because they manipulate all the geek benches.
Shut up fandroid
J.D. Valles Fandroid has a good ring to it, sounds like a compliment lol
***** stfu android noob with holes in the software kitkat is for eating only.
***** That's what you get with plastic.
***** That's your opinion but you are in denial if you think the ram speed etc. are accurate in the geek benches they manipulate everything.
Hey Marques, i was using an iphone 5c and after watching your review on the new moto x i decided to change. Great video, and im loving the motox (2014). Its my first time using an android phone, i always had an iphone. Thanks, and keep these videos coming. Best reviews ive watched.
"Ok Jarvis" haha sweet!
I should have tried to get this rather than the bloat filled GS5.
This guys videos are so on point and they are so much fun to watch...
Moto X 2generation Update Android 7.0?
Probably not, but I'm hoping for that! Anyway, if it doesn't update for the Android 7.0, Cyanomgenmod made a ROM for it, but it's in proccess, because there are some bugs in the camera... But it will be probably good before the next year...
none of the phones that have 801 will get updates
on my moto x, I got updates tho
PoodsFan1001 PoodsFan1001 is true or fake please reply & thanks for helping
I get updates on my moto x 2nd gen but the updates did not upgrade to 7.0. I got 2 updates recently but I'm on 6.0. It might take a couple of months ( maybe years ) to get an upgrade because most phones take a long time for it to be upgradable.
I am getting A moto x for free from a family friend! He bought it but never used it so I get it!!😃😃
Crybaby Dollies sweet :)
Isabela Ciabattoni -Dolls and Vlogs get it get it !
Watching your videos in 1440p is amazing
Moto x or iPhone 5s
Toby Holland moto x any day the iphone 5s barely beats the first moto x lmao
Toby Holland Moto X beats the Iphone 6
Toby Holland *Best Price for Moto X here **amzn.to/1A8ZtkU** Click view now !!!*
I'm an android guy but I'd definitely go with iPhone 5s. It's so well optimized and consistent..
***** Yea but I heard after a while the phone gets significantly slower. Is that true?
Battery and camera suck. Two of the most important things. Wtf
He didn't say they suck he said it wasn't the best ever
supermike980 This Moto X's gets 2.5hr - 3h screen on time according to Marques. The Z3C on the other hand is getting around 8hr apparently, I expect the full sized Z3 to be quite impressive as well. (maybe slightly less due to larger and higher res display). The battery on this phone is a deal breaker, along with the camera, and lack of microSD expansion.
why am i the only one who gets the feeling that this guy's a motorola fanboy?! SERIOUSLY
That dimple is actually supposed to move around like that. Yep, i checked many at different stores and it actually feels quite nice the way it adjusts for your finger basically.
No
Stop trying to sell me a potato.
What should I get the Moto X or the OnePlus One?
***** Thanks
rankin231 oneplus one if you like bigger screen. the battery is good
Oneplus one for a better battery. Moto x for an easier and better overall Android experience. I wouldn't wordt about performance because they both have a snapdragon 801 and both run really smoothly.
If you get the oneplusone it will not work with Verizon just saying if you use Verizon
+rankin231 what did you end up getting?
I have been using the motox one couldnt be more happier as it is not about the specs but always about the experience. The fluidity in which the phone performs is simply unmatched
#Verizon logo
Literally the first thing I noticed. As someone waiting to upgrade my first gen Moto X, this makes me feel optimistic that VZW launch is imminent.
***** Verizon is expensive as SHIT. But it works. And it works damn well. I love my verizon service.. just not the bill!
Check out the Sony xperia z3 compact, high end specs in a small display
Hey Marcus..
This is really funny.. Every time you say "ok google" in this video, my phone responds to it by opening google now. At first I didn't get what's happening and I thought it was some bug. So I replayed the video again the same thing happened whenever you that phrase. 😂
You got a tumor on your head or something?
+Forever Alone it's a joke dumbfuck
Jacob Lucas
very funny huh?
yes, it's hilarious
and samsung is still shit
+Petter Vosvel They make the best phones on the market arguably. Not Iphones. Apple copies everything that Samsung does. The Galaxy phones are superior to Iphones in every way. But if you like small asian children who work in huge factories that have toxic materials everywhere building your phone - Iphone is the choice for you.
+lairdriver what have apple copied exactly, its the opposite really. And where do u think samsung produce their phones?
Still using this phone and it still smooth as new.
how is the battery life?
Lucas Alegre Mines battery life isn't great, had some early shut off issues. Switched to a 6p in January just I just shattered and then extra shattered it (pretty much dead now, purple liquid (ink?) bleeding from the inside down). Honestly going back to this phone, it's still really, snappy camera has never been great, and the battery is doable. I do miss having hat fast charging though. Overall still a great phone.
Here just for nostalgia after watching the Moto Edge + reviews in 2020
Johanns Rogers SAME OMG I thought I was the only one
My google now popped-up when the guy said "OK Google" @ 5:13. Lol
I think with the Motorola dimple on the back they should install a finger print sensor in it so right when you hold it you can put your finger on it to unlock it.
I hope the old Moto X gets that update to Active Display. It'd be nice to check more than the most recent notification.
I'm just glad Motorola is putting out great phones again. I kind of miss my Star Tac.
07:39 A GHOST!! MKBHD ILLUMINATY OMFIRMED
Awesome review as usual @MKBHD. Shame we don't get the Moto X 2014 in Australia.
Anyone else noticed the Play Store at 4:41 having subscriptions?
"Ok Jarvis" woke my Google Nest Hub lol.
Still got that phone bro?
2017 and I'm still using this phone. Love it.
did it get laggy or is it still smooth?
It didn't get laggy
