Our greatest respect and gratitude to the authorities of Maya Bay in taking a clearly unpopular decision to prioritize the safeguard of the environment over the commercial benefit of tourism. This will be a valuable case study for many coastal and beach cities in Asia to value the original inhabitants of the environment including the flora and fauna.

I was there when Phi Phi island was an unknown in 1991. There was one hotel. To get there, you have to be on a long tail boat for 5 hours. No speed boat. When I get there, barely other tourist in sight. I still have the picture of me in the bay alone in the middle of the afternoon. Right just outside of the Maya bay was the most beautiful coral reef I've ever seen to date, and I'm to Hawaii (Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Big Island), Bahamas (many island, don't remember), and Cancun. Whenever I saw the recent videos, pictures of Maya Bay, I was sick. The most beautiful thing and Thai government and people doesn't know what they have, and it's one of their crown jewels in their tourist industry. I'm glad they finally do something with it. However, I feel it's way too late. Coral takes decades to grow. Closing it for a few years will never put it back where it once was. Phi Phi should have been treated like Similan islands. Similan has no hotels, only limited camping with permit.

I'm so damn happy they finally closed Maya Bay for tourists. I've worked as a divemaster in the area and during the season of 2012-2013 we didn't see a damn blacktip for the whole season and we thought they gone extinct in the area. Next season 2013-2014 we saw them slowly returning, but they weren't many of them. Whale sharks has also returned to the area and finally Thai authorities might get that mass tourism isn't the answer. You have unique marine life in the area and it would be nice if it can continue in the future as well, but there's lots to do. Overfishing and fishing fleets showling the marine park is absolutely devastating to see. It has to end!

I’ve been there and honestly the tour was beautiful, but Maya Bay itself was an awful experience because there were tourists EVERYHWHERE! You couldn’t even see the water because everyone took pictures and posed in there and boats waited there. And for shops, I personally haven’t seen a single shop in Maya Bay Area. I assume there are only very very few. So I think it’s more important to protect thousands of fishes and precious nature habitat 🧡

Its a beautiful place. Been there. So crowded with tourist. Its now time for the marine life to take over it again. I am so happy to see the sharks swimming freely without any harm

I probably will never be on that sand, on that beach observing the magnifcient beauty of that place . . . but I don't mind if this has been done to help full recover the Amazing Island and its natural resources.

This only can happened when Thailand is under military government. They can do it without the interference from opposing politicians who claimed to represent local tourist operators.
Tour operators usually don"'t give a dam on environment.

I support Thailand's effort. Maybe if to be opened, restriction must be put in place. Only 10 able to visit a day.

its a large beach. 10 would be lonely and a bit scary haha. maybe 120 visitor a day is a perfect number.

I was so lucky to go there 20 yrs ago it was magical. Then I went 10 yrs ago and it was already stuffed. The bay next to maya Bay is nicer it's very deep and no beach but the water and coral and reef fish is or was incredible.

I visited maya bay back in 2003. That morning there wasn’t a cloud in sight and apart from myself there was an older couple walking around and that was it. I’ll remember that moment for the rest of my life. I still go back to Thailand now and then but I avoid ko phi phi. It’s to damaged now.

You can see on google earth how the Trees are dying off Exsposing the Titain compared to older pictures where there is more trees on the Titain. And the story givin here coincides with the allowance of the trees in the foliage I never seem to grow back before they allow people to go back to the island

We skipped PhiPhi islands whilest we were in Krabi. Not my cup of tea being crammed in a bay with thousands of other people. I'm really happy the Thai government is taking measures to rescue this treasure.

Close it forever. It was a horrible experience when it was open. The disappointment on everyone's faces when they entered the bay to be greeted with hundreds of boats and thousands of people was obvious. It was a madhouse.

It's kind of ironic in a sad way that Maya bay became so famous due of a story about a group of people desperate to protect it from public knowledge.
The reason being that humans ruin everything they find.

Honestly I would be satisfied with just 4k tour of the beach from the government and ban all of us forever. The beach is way more important than our money

The day I visited Maya Bay it was actually not over crowded. Glad I got to see it with my own eyes, but now that I know better...Happy the govt is doing something to preserve nature. They should just close it permanently. So many other lovely islands & beaches all over Thailand.

I mean when they were opened you really couldn't see nothing, everything was blocked by the boats and people. Now it actually looks pristine and beautiful.

💜 I am so glad that it is closed. I almost get tears in my eyes. And those beautiful sharks coming back. Just lovely!!
I was there in 2015 with all those tourist boats. It is such a amazingly beautiful place, but I felt so sorry that all the thousands of tourists were there destroying the place.
