Time and time again, we see the same thing, once Jamaican artists sign with overseas labels their career gets stagnant. Anytime I hear a Jamaican signing to a US label I always get disappointed because I've seen what seems to come with it. Look at Shenseea, I love her music, but since she dropped Alpha there hasn't really been much from her. I think singles keep artists relevant in the public's mind, especially when sometimes they take years to put out an album. Shenseea is still relevant, but it's undeniable that her career is looking different. I'm glad Popcaan is going independent.
Mr. Vegas was right when he labeled Drake as fake in May 2016. At the time, Drake dropped an album with samples of Beenie Man and Popcaan, and he never gave the artists any credit. So Vagas but in and called out Drake. But that did not sit well with Popcaan-he dropped a video dissing Vegas. Clearly, Poppy is dissatisfied with Drake and OVO. Drake did nothing to help the artist in a meaningful way. Even his contribution on the collaboration for the "Great Is He" album was not up to par.
Look at Morgan Herritage for example. They put major work into their albums. Years later you can listen to them. They enable them to tour regularly and entertain the fans with a theme instead of just the same singles over and over again. Definitely agree more artists need to do quality bodies of work. Your fans will appreciate it 1st then the wider world at some point.

Y'all dancing around the real issue... As a dj I'm telling u the problem is the riddims and style of the songs... Ppl can't dance to the current riddims in Dancehall and the songs aren't melodic anymore... The drum patterns changed and the artists are more dark and choppy/erratic in their style and not as melodic... cultures that aren't entrenched into the current style of dancehall don't find it appealing... It's not easy for them to simply just dance to or sing a catchy hook or melody
When Popcaan just get signed, i was looking for major things. However, Dancehall under a rap label isn't going to be marketed in the way we think. Popcaan has grown a lot since being signed to OVO. So I guess the label did what it needed to do for his career in terms of getting his name out there in certain markets. Twist & Turn Ft. Drake did great numbers so we've seen growth.

Dancehall albums don’t sell because of the culture. Genre more appealing to 3rd world countries. But y’all ain’t ready for that conversation.
Very true, but we can’t sell out our culture completely. Modern Dancehall is more adjacent to hip-hop in certain style and topics anyway.
Only a few artists signed to labels, which has something to do with the scarcity of albums. It takes resources and time to produce an album.
