    49:45 I think it’s the pinnacle of Britishness that Douglas didn’t think “the Yanks cheated” or “the Germans were biased”, instead he said “the British argument was not presented Correctly”.

    7:46- No, with the buffalo it was much worse, with people just shooting them and leaving their carcasses to rot in order to clear spots for railroads and to starve the Indians.

    There at the beginning, you are close. Thomas Jefferson believed in the executive branch to have as absolutely little power as possible to avoid becoming a dictator/king. Very shortly after becoming president, he was offered the Louisiana territory by Napoleon for ridiculously cheap price. The way it worked back then, the president needed approval from Congress to make a purchase like that. But he went ahead and did it without permission anyways,going against the ideals he had about the presidency before he was president.
    Also, regarding President Buchanan, he was notoriously weak, and was not a leader. As a matter of fact, the handful of presidents that preceded Abraham Lincoln were all very weak men, who are not in a position to lead the country with everything that was going on at the time.

    48:16 There was such a charge during the Civil War that you're thinking of, but not at Gettysburg. At the Battle of Fredericksburg, both sides briefly stopped firing when a CSA soldier named Richard Kirkland abandoned his position and rushed into no-man's-land to aid Union wounded, earning him the nickname "The Angel of Marye's Heights".

    James Buchanan refused a firm stand on either side of the slavery issue, failed to resolve the question, and left the nation's gravest crisis to his successor. So long story short, his inaction was a prime contribution to the Civil War happening in the first place. That's one of the many reasons he's generally regarded as one of if not the worst president in US history.

  • @Billmaster115
    @Billmaster115 8 месяцев назад +4

    As a Brit, I do drink tea out of a cup, then again, we also drink coffee out of teacups. Most people, though, just use mugs; simpler, cheaper and more common unfortunately. However, I personally reserve my good tea set for a proper cup set, and I am talking expensive, high quality tea. That's just me though, I keep the culture alive just a little bit against Americanisation. No offense, but fast food and over-sweetening everything has ruined cuisine and fine dining. I don't blame Americans, just my own people.

    1:02 Thomas Jefferson, like the rest of the Founding Fathers, was for the idea of westward expansion, Thomas Jefferson was only famous for being against the Federal Government from having too much power over the States and encroaching on people’s rights and liberties. The motivations of the American Revolution were to have equal representation in government and to expand westward. In the history books, they list the proclamation line back when they were still the Thirteen Colonies as a reason for the tension between the colonies and the British Empire because they just won the Seven Years War (known as the French and Indian War here in the United States) and wanted the opportunity to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains, but the British made a treaty with Native tribes in the area and agreed that no settlers are allowed beyond the proclamation line (which is why the Thirteen Colonies were defined by the Appalachian Mountains) and the fact the colonies were becoming more and more densely populated which created an overpopulation issue, thus creating the tension between the colonies and their overlord. One of the rewards for the veterans of the American Revolution after the new United States gained independence was land grants west of the Appalachian Mountains and finally having a chance to settle where they wanted to sense they were no longer under the shackles of the British government

    20:00 well, $100 in 1854 would be $3,745 in 2024, so doing the math $80.33 back then would be $3,008 today.
