Thank you for all the videos on MK5! Great help. But I do think it is worth mentioning that MK5 gen actuslly has 2 ways og draining and filling oil. On the later gearbox models, JCR and KBL your method in the video will be wrong since the gearbox is tilted 10 degrees forward in the horisontal pane. This means that the fill hole is too low and cannot be used to fill proper amount. To drain and fill properly one should follow the workshop manual and read the TSB accordingly. First, remove the air filter housing. Then push down the gear selector and lock the gear selector pin. Now, disconnect the reverse light switch and unscrew it. Use a 22mm wrench or a 22 mm deep socket pipe. This is your fill hole using a 8-10mm hose. Now unscrew the draining plug with a 17mm HEX socket and be sure to catch all oil in a pan so you can measure the amount. Next is to unscrew the outer pivot pin placed beside the VW brand on the gearbox (there are 2 of them, it is the one closest to the LEFT side drive axle that tou should remove). Use a Torx 40 I think it was (or maybe T-30 dont remember). This pivot pin has a rubber sealing. U can reuse, but it is recommended to replace it. Now catch all oil draining from pivot locking pin and be sure to measure the amount. Now, you have drained all oil, and it should be somewhere around 1,7-1,8ltr in total. Next is to use a funnel and refill the exact same amount through the reverse light switch hole. When finished, torque to specs and youre done. Here is av video that shows the correct procedure for JCR and KBL manual 5-speed transmissions. ruclips.net/video/uVlboxLunzM/видео.html

After filling you should move the front wheels a couple of rotations, so the gears get covered in oil, the gearbox oil level will then fall a little and you add more oil. If you just replace like this without moving the wheels / which moves the gear, then you risk not filling gearbox with enough oil.
This happened to me.. The correct capacity. Was over three liters and I only put in 1,8liters.. My fifth gear and bearings all burnt.. I did it wrong twice.. I know now.. And see you doing same..

In the service manual it does not say to start engine, put in gear and top up oil again. It only says to fill it with 1.7 litres in the reverse switch sensor hole. Maybe I have missed something in the manual, can you help out ?

I do all my own work because I had a dad who taught me about old cars, which made it easier for me learning modern ECU cars. I'm not sure if I should do a DSG oil change though. The van has 300,000km on the clock, on the original gearbox and motor, and there's some clunking at certain revs and gear changes. I don't wanna cause more issues by doing an oil change. I've replaced many components of the engine though.

This way is wrong, because motor/transmission mounting angle of VW golf MK5 has changed. Gearbox 5 shift take from 1,7 to 1,9 litres oil. Look for more information at internet (you can find correct steps to change oil gearbox), before make something wrong!!!!
You did this operation completely wrong. Firstly. You didn't drain all the gearbox oil. You drained the oil from the differential part of the gearbox housing, but the oil in the gearbox part of the gearbox housing remains. Secondly. You poured too little gearbox oil. In the VW Golf 5, the plug that you unscrewed at the beginning of the movie is not used to pour the oil into the gearbox housing. Instead of that, You should unscrew the reverse light switch and about 2 liters (1.9-2.1 liters) of oil are poured through the hole after it, after draining all gear oil from the gearbox housing. Thirdly. In the VW Golf 5 and derivatives, it is not possible to check if there is too little oil in the gearbox housing. All you can do is drain the old oil completely from both parts of the gearbox housing and pour about 2 liters (1.9-2.1 liters) of oil back into the gearbox. Because for the gentlemen from VW, the Golf 4 gearbox housing turned too much forward and in the Golf V the inspection hole is below the required gear oil level.
If You want to find how to drain oil from the gearbox part of the gearbox housing of the VW Golf 5 manual gearbox, please search for proper print screens from the VW service manual. There are some pictures that present this ****king engineering disaster. :-)
