There is no doubt, 1975-1977 emergency was the 'Darkest Hour for Indian Democracy'. When our fundamental rights and freedom of expression were denied. Common people had to face Inhumane atrocities in a democratic country. All this happened for greed of power and rule. Selfish personal agendas were served by then PM Indira Gandhi. No one has ever imagined of such extreme oppression by their chosen leader. It is not wrong to say Emergency period was a kind of Immunization of Indian Democracy. First thing there were several significant amendments in Constitution about emergency. Post 1975, Country has not faced any other emergency till the date. That phase was itself a hard learned lesson for Indian Democracy and public. Second, Congress government faced the ire of citizens, lost in elections and had to face criticism, globally. Specifically for India Gandhi, emergency had badly ruined her stature and questioned her administrative abilities. This showed the strength of Democracy and it's believers.

The emergency which was imposed in 1975-77 created a terrible environment in the country. Various self interest were raised by the then prime minister Indira Gandhi at the cost of people of the country. The system was very fragile at that time when emergency was imposed. The internal disturbance clause which was taken as an advantage point for political career by the Indira Gandhi. So taking lesson from this incident the 44th constitutional amendment in 1978 was done by the then short period Janata Party govt. In which the emergency provisions were made strict and tougher to impose . like internal disturbance was altered as armed rebellion, the special majority was required to impose emergency in parliament and i has to be passed within one month from the proclamation of the emergency and there is need to give a request in written form for the president which was earlier verbal. So these type of changes were done so that in further or future it could be difficult to impose emergency without proper reason . although this happened because of this incident 1975-77 so the initiatives were taken like these otherwise system would not have changed till date .so now it will be beneficial for the future. So no doubt the emergency of 1975-77 acted as immunisation for the future risk against Indian democracy because the system has been made rationale and fine.

I have been hearing on Emergency issue since long time but never actually understood it. Thanks for making it clear.
Kartikesh Saurkar BJP and other parties formed an alliance and won in election immediately after emergency but couldn’t maintain unity. They started having clashes amongst themselves and indra took advantage of that and won the next time. Congress was united BJP wasn’t. Problem as old as time with us Hindus.... lack of unity. But still we never learn from history or from our past mistakes.
Immunizations means to have sufficient power to handle the opposite situation which is not desirable . Emergency of 1975-77 was not in the favour of country's interest despite it took a personal political fight where the consitution was used to protect personal interest deliberately and due to that country faces very crucial time,so in future to avoid such problems amendment 44 was made which filters the power of implementing the emergency as well as protects the right of citizens during the emergency.

Sir, I am from a small town Jamshedpur(Tatanagar), where Tata Steel is situated. When I read the history of India I feel that the foundation stone of an Industrial Revolution in India originates from Tata Steel(1907) and I salute Jamshed jee Tata for this. In its due course of action, Indira and her policies during emergency pin pointed the loopholes in our fundamentals. First and foremost is the forced sterilization drive during emergency. India's population was below 1 billion in 1975. 40% of present population was not even born then. It was a necessary yet cruel step to diffuse the population bomb of India. Another being the 42nd amendment act of making india a socialist Secular Republican state. It also incorporated the fundamental duties in constitution. 1975 emergency unveiled the evil side of a democratic society and provisions of its smooth transformation into an autocratic one. 44th amendment act worked to somehow to overcome this discrepancy in constitution by restoring the power balance and ensured survival of democracy.
well i would like to differ on one point i.e incorporation of fundamental duties ..i guess fundamental duties should be there in every country's constitution ..coz as a citizen of our country we should not only enjoy fundamental rights we also have to abide to our constitution to respect our soveriginity and to perform our duties to make our country integrated etc.

the 1975 emergency was no doubt proven to be a very unnecessary and self-centered decision by the congress-supremo Indira gandhi. The way all the fundamental constitutional rights were suspended, the freedom of press was threatened, and the forced demolition of the opposition were some of the major points which questioned the credibility of emergency. Also there was no any concrete reason provided to explain that and this made it more challenging for the Indira-govt . coming to the point, firstly it is very obvious that the emergency declaration procedure was a bit handy for the union powers and so it was implemented. secondly that the press and media during the time and before the emergency, was having a very less coverage around the country which was further made more difficult for them by the Indira govt. the sequence of actions proved to be a threat to the congress party in post-emergency time .the govt was defeated in the Loksabha elections held just after revoking emergency in 1976. the elected party then formed a commission to investigate the credibility of the emergency and came to a conclusion that it wasn't having any concrete reason. The Janta party leaders decided to learn from the incidents and brought an amendment in the constitution which made it more complex to implement any type of emergency weather due to external or internal disturbance, or due to financial emergency. it is believed that an emergency, at some sort of time destroys the democratic arrangement of the nation, and thus the emergency in 1975-1977 acted as an immunization for the Indian democracy which made it more complex to implement emergency after 1977 till now.

Those two years will always remain as a darkest years in indian history. Misusing of priministral power for the personal benefit was absolutely discourageous. What was happened then is known to all now. But what we get is the 44th Constitutional Amendment also known as the mini constitution. That defines the limitations of a Govt and became flexible for the democratic India. Thanx to that emergency situation we got our Fundamental Rights and also our judicial rights. Democrats are now able to stand and speak against the beurocrats through the gudiciary system. Some parts in the constitutions are made rigid so that even the Govt can't mold that against the public. Hence the 1975-77 emergency helps the later governace to work better. Thank you.
Yes, the 1975-77 emergency acted as an immunization for Indian Democracy. If we call it the Dark Chapter in Indian History there was no doubt. The peoples are helpless when their ruler rules for their benefit. And again this shows that power is everything and constitutional rights were only the exhibit part to the people. well i would like to differ on one point i.e incorporation of fundamental duties ..i guess fundamental duties should be there in every country's constitution ..coz as a citizen of our country we should not only enjoy fundamental rights we also have to abide to our constitution to respect our soveriginity and to perform our duties to make our country integrated etc.

the 1975 emergency was no doubt proven to be a very unnecessary and self-centered decision by the congress-supremo Indira gandhi. The way all the fundamental constitutional rights were suspended, the freedom of press was threatened, and the forced demolition of the opposition were some of the major points which questioned the credibility of emergency. Also there was no any concrete reason provided to explain that and this made it more challenging for the Indira-govt . coming to the point, firstly it is very obvious that the emergency declaration procedure was a bit handy for the union powers and so it was implemented. secondly that the press and media during the time and before the emergency, was having a very less coverage around the country which was further made more difficult for them by the Indira govt. the sequence of actions proved to be a threat to the congress party in post-emergency time .the govt was defeated in the Loksabha elections held just after revoking emergency in 1976.
the elected party then formed a commission to investigate the credibility of the emergency and came to a conclusion that it wasn't having any concrete reason. The Janta party leaders decided to learn from the incidents and brought an amendment in the constitution which made it more complex to implement any type of emergency weather due to external or internal disturbance, or due to financial emergency. it is believed that an emergency, at some sort of time destroys the democratic arrangement of the nation, and thus the emergency in 1975-1977 acted as an immunization for the Indian democracy which made it more complex to implement emergency after 1977 till now.

Those two years will always remain as a darkest years in indian history. Misusing of priministral power for the personal benefit was absolutely discourageous. What was happened then is known to all now. But what we get is the 44th Constitutional Amendment also known as the mini constitution. That defines the limitations of a Govt and became flexible for the democratic India. Thanx to that emergency situation we got our Fundamental Rights and also our judicial rights. Democrats are now able to stand and speak against the beurocrats through the gudiciary system. Some parts in the constitutions are made rigid so that even the Govt can't mold that against the public.
Hence the 1975-77 emergency helps the later governace to work better.
