- This week we check out the EMD F40-PH locomotives as well as one of the private cars that belong to Philip Anschutz, owner of the Grand Canyon Railway.
In 1984, Anschutz purchased the Rio Grande Railroad. Anschutz put together a three-car private train of ex-Rio Grande cars that he restored and dressed out into three AMAZING private cars.
In 1988, the Rio Grande Railroad purchased the Southern Pacific Railroad under Anschutz. With the merger of the Southern Pacific and Union Pacific Corporation in September 1996, Anschutz became Vice-Chairman of Union Pacific, later leaving that position. In 2008 Anschutz bought Xanterra Parks and Resorts, which included the Grand Canyon Railway. He brought his private cars to the shops in Williams. We had the chance to tour one of the three cars. The other two were in use.

Here's what F40PH stands for the "F" for the full-width cowl carbody, "40" as the locomotive is part of EMD's 40-series (based on the GP40-2 freight locomotive), "P" for passenger service, and "H" for head-end power
Thanks!!!!! Logical. No wonder I didn’t know. I’m better at illogical.
Private cars are a real classic. Interior design is really interesting.
Very nice trip my good friends please keep as posted you are the best nd your wife 🎉nd God Bless you guys 😊
Always interesting! Like you Dale I'm not too quick one the Diesels. As far as sittings on the veranda at the end of the train and sipping some brandy. 😊 Thanks again guys.
When we went to the Grand Canyon, we drove from the Park back out to the town of Williams so that we could ride the train back down into the National Park. We bought tickets to get to ride in the parlor car on the back of the train, both directions. It was more fun riding down into the park than it was returning to Williams to retrieve our rental car, but it was neat to get to ride in the special car, even on the return. trip. We really enjoyed that trip!!!
Being that when I was a kid in the 1960’s we took both the California Zephyr and the Santa Fe Super Chief back to Chicago (from San Francisco) a couple of times I have always been more found of diesel engines. My favorites have always been the streamlined EMD F-Units and E-Units (F’s were shorted, 4 wheels per truck, E’s longer with 6 wheels). The sleek look of these engines, usually in A/B/A configuration pulling a long passenger train was the best!
My favorite too!
Great video of the Grand Canyon Railway. I had went to the California Central Model Railroad Club located in Santa Clara. Next I am probably going to do videoing on board VTA Light Rail again. Then go to the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad. And finally the Disneyland Monorail and Disneyland Railroad.
The cars reminded me of The Wild Wild West show! Thanks for sharing it with us.
Always entertaining and informative and in no way boring!
Hi Ken. What a summer. This was a great trip. I’m calling it “The Pause in the Disaster”. Tuesday we are showing a tiny part of the disaster. .
@@ToyManTelevision Dale: We have a son that lives in Colorado. Maybe Anschutz will be able to own the air since it is so thin.
@@ToyManTelevision I believe I know what you mean, and I am waiting to see it. Happy Labor Day.
You all are so much fun. Thanks for the video. I will be going to the Grand Canyon Railway the first week of October with some friends.
You will love it. 💯.
OMG THE PRIVATE CARS! Utah and the 2 Patrick Henry cars are the reason I love private cars so much! I remember seeing all 3 on the back of the Southwest Chief many years ago and I just fell in love! That's why I bought my own car and hope to restore it to Amtrak specs!
Wow!!!!!!! !!!!!!! I always wanted to do something like that. But gee!! Expensive. I think there is a group… private car group that meets. If fuzzy on that.
@@ToyManTelevision yep! I'm part of Rail Passenger Car Alliance. It's the group for more museums and railfan owners. American Association of Private Railcar Owners is usually the really rich people who just want to be exclusive. But there are some people/cars that are part of both!
@@IowaTrainGay 😎 thanks!!!
I'm not into diesel-electric, but the F40PH engine is one of the few diesel locomotives that I like. The other is the EMD SD40-2 diesel locomotive. I'm a traction guy who also LOVES steam locomotives. That luxurious, private observation railroad car is a really beautiful, so is it's interior.
SDPF45 is cool, too. ATSF of course
Tight fit, great video!
What a history learning video love it. Those passager cars are beautiful so glad he had them restored to there original look. Thank you for sharing.
GOD BLESS 🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖
Good morning! Blessings right back.
I'm with you. Diesels are interesting and useful, but steam is awe inspiring.
I would have been afraid of getting stuck in that small area. Notice though it is electric there are no batteries. And now I know why the Anschutz hospital in Colorado got its name.
That guy owns everything In Colorado. Except the air. He’s working on that.
10:06 looking out the window you see Upturbinefan and his brother looking over the traction motor.
" it's good to be rich ".....
It doesn’t suck. I guess. I’ll let ya know. If ever.
Lol!!!! It's called head end power.
Railway tracks and 6.5 inches long
What happend to the alco FA's? I know at one point they had a A-B-B-A set. Have they gotten rid of those too? That would be a bummer if so
They have some Fs. No idea how many. But not operational. And not working on them. I think.
I'm an engineer for UP. I've never used the "blow down cocks" to start a EMD 16 645 locomotive. I wonder if it's F40PH specific.
Nope. They exist on all EMD 2 stroke engines. If the engine is not shut down for a long period of time, then they typically are not used.
Any body know what happened to all of their old alco FA's ?) :
Still there, but rarely used.
@@ehadderok good
No offence, but that's a pretty tight area to cram some pensioners into! Nice to be able to see it, but claustrophobic
It was a challenge.
you should add your own private railcar to your garden railroad :) if they make them in that scale that is
Yea….
