This Season is off to a great start. The reason why these episodes are so fun so far? Because they are taking advantage of the 15 years of story they have laid out already (even longer than that if they add in any mutant stuff in later episodes). I really hope the rest of the MCU leans harder into the crossover/shared universe aspects of the entire MCU. The past few years have given us content that hasn't felt connected or consequential.
given that this episode takes place 1988, if howard and peggy successfully convince winter solider to understand his real identity as bucky and remove hydra's brainwashing, he might not end up killing howard and maria, tony stark's parents in 1991!
This is one of the bestter what if episode in the series so far , at least in my opinions very fun Characters dynamics, and pairing ,and decent pacing for the story its telling i think very much enjoyed seeing this alternate 80s avenger roster honestly might be one of my new favorite just based on that.
I just hope that this is a good sign Marvel is getting back on track. We just need good stories and not a bunch of movies & streaming shows that don't push the franchise forward in a positive direction. What if Bill Foster and Bucky fighting together was a nice touch. Plus watching Hank failing at being a single dad made it real.
As much as I'd love to believe that, the main MCU movies are locked into what they are. The what if shorts have a lot more freedom to tell fun and unique stories because they're not connected to the main MCU
I want to see the pre-historic avengers, personally. With the first Ghost Rider, Odin, Agammotto, and Firehair. But the other variants would be great to see as well.
I'd love to see an X-men, Spider man, fantastic 4 cross over once they get that part of the MCU filled out, would be amazing to see that as a 2000s cross over.
The whole Ant-Man film reference with Hank having a relationship with his young daughter to John Kani's son voicing T'Chaka with the design of T'Chaka honoring Chadwick Boseman, The whole Kung Fu feel wit Ego walking on the desert to the whole Infinity War style battle against Ego the living celestial with GOTG Vol. 2 climax sequence as younger Peter Quill tries to destroy Ego from the inside just incredible.
When the light beer convo happened, Thor says “I’ll have ANOTHER!” like in the first Thor film when he was drinking coffee and eating breakfast at the diner in the small town in the desert with Jane and Darcy.
I want more of this universe ! Such a great episode ! Also, Hope and Peter had a very good chemistry. If they do end up together when older, that means Hope has a type, because I think this Peter will become similar to Spider-man as he grows up. Unfortunately, along with happiness, there is a sad note to this universe too. Because Hank recovered his faith in S.H.I.E.L.D, I can see Hope following in her mother's footsteps to the letter, in a similar fashio to her "No Avengers" counterpart. Now, I don't know if Hank would go as far as he did in that other timeline, BUT her death would certainly start a whole domino effect, such as Peter potentially leaving Earth for good (the galaxy still needs its guarding, and the Nexus point to form the team). And there's also the fact Wakanda being more public earlier paints a large target for Killmonger to access. And H.Y.D.R.A might need its new executioner. A personal fanfic I like in this sad scenario, though, it's the Nine Realm's survivors taking over Nowhere, with Loki becoming like a more pro-active Collector (there's no way he didn't survive). The implications are quite creepy, though.
I don’t remember off the top of my head how Scott got intertwined with Hope and then Hank to become the next Ant-man but I doubt that would still play out the same way I wonder if this Peter would be taught and raised as the next Ant-man with Hope considering he said the shrinking tech was pretty cool multiple times throughout this episode. It would also make this timelines Ant-man wayy more powerful since he’s part celestial, also poor Scott if that’s the case I guess he would just stay as a criminal 😅
I would love to see a full length, animated Avengers film with these Avengers in like the late-90's maybe early 2000's (pre-2010) doing literally whatever, whether its actually killing Ego or fighting off the Kree invasion, they had such great chemistry, I loved this episode.
I am surprised Thor didn't have any interaction with the space stone/the tesseract given it was originally in his dad's vault!! love that the containment cell that was made for the hulk, which briefly held loki and thor now incarcerated peter quill!
Episode 2 so far is probably my favorite of the first three I’ve seen from this season’s What If? It was really nice to see the older characters do their thing back in the day and form their own Avengers team in the 80’s. I genuinely would love to get more stories from this certain reality and I hope it leads to an animated series. Maybe when they do live-action soft Avengers reboot with new different actors, the OG Avengers can perhaps reprise their roles in a potential series via VA. Just wishful thinking though.
The Avengers showing up in the desert with the Army to face Ego was just like the scene from Man of Steel when they faced Zod and Lois and Superman went with him.
Really loved the chemistry between the Avengers team in here, especially having all the original actors this worked so well would love to see more like this 👍
Was watching this and got me thinking. Why didn't Fury use the pager to call Captain Marvel during the first Avengers movie when the Aliens came?? She said only for emergencies...seems potentially nuking NYC would be an emergency. Just curious. @emergencyawesome
Peter firing that blast at Ego was definitely a Dragonball Kamehameha reference - seeing as that first started airing on TV in the 80s too. The writers really put the work in on this one such a good episode
How old were Peggy and Howard supposed to be? Wouldn't they be in their late 60s and retired? Wasn't Nick Fury in Beirut with Alexander Pearce in the 80s? So Hydra is still going to rise in Sheild and control Bucky.
Peters attack against Ego at the end, looked a lot like a Spirit Gun shot from Yusuke Urameshi from YuYu Hakusho, I wondered if it was possible Peter had somehow seen some of it, since its a pretty old series, but no alas, it came out in the 90s, so a few years too early, even if he was getting manga straight from japan before Yondu grabbed him, which was already absurdly unlikely.
I was thinking this version of the Avengers had good chemistry and are powerful as a group. So cool I didn’t realize young hope was being played by the same live action young actress. I didn’t recognize Annette Bening’s voice and noticed this animated character is voiced another actress named Keri.
For some of the legacy heroes tony might end up like armored adventures as either obadiah or Wenwu kills him instead of hydra. Its likely either Maria Rambeu ends up as Binary or photon like in the other realities.
I think the reason Ego has to do his expansion plan 1 planet at a time is because of how young Peter still is in this timeline. In the MCU, Peter was an adult when he got his powers unlocked and therefore had more powerful potential that had built inside of him for his whole life, but here since he's still just a child even though his powers were unlocked much sooner than the main Star Lord, he still had a lot more growing to do before he can reach his true full potential with his celestial powers. That's why Ego couldn't do his expansion plan all at once in this reality, unlike the main version. At least that's my theory, sorta like how in the comics Batman stated that Jon Kent might even be stronger than Superman due to his hybrid physiology, but couldn't fully tell at the time due to the fact that Jonathan was still just a kid.
I’m a vocal detractor of a lot of What if’s episodes, but this episode was a rarity because unlike the first episode, eternals, or Thor ragnarok. I not only liked the episode but I think this episode was better than the comic it’s loosely based on. For those wondering. The first episode was loosely inspired by Marvel “Bullet Points” by virtue of both having captain America take the role of iron man. Ragnarok is very(VERY) loosely based on planet hulk. Go watch the animated movie or read the comics if you want more details. Eternals is based on Earth X, which is my favorite marvel comic of all time, and even did a better job of explaining why the eternals never helped in the crisis. And this episode was loosely based on “what if the avengers formed in the 1950’s” as both feature a bunch of older and more obscure heroes being required by the government for a crisis. Although in the comics, 3D man and the Atlas heroes were recruited and the crisis involved a cabal trying to abduct and kill president Eisenhower.
I want more of this universe ! Such a great episode ! Also, Hope and Peter had a very good chemistry. If they do end up together when older, that means Hope has a type, because I think this Peter will become similar to Spider-man as he grows up.
Id like it since it was the 80s the avengers live in the avengers mansion like the original 60-80s or its likely live in Hydro Base like they do after the manor is destroyed.

One thing you didn't mention, that I thought would really obvious, is that a lot ofd the future Avengers are about 8 years old in this timeline and with this early version coming together, that opens the door to all the kids getting together, including T- Challa and Killmonger, Tony Stark... but just those that are children of the already Super Heros if this timeline. I could see Peter Quill hanging out with them, keeping them safe when one of them little geniouses finds the Winter Soldier beat up and save him. While nursing him back to health, they discover his plan to free the kids in the Red Room and offer to help... but not in a teen movie kids save the world cartoon way, but in a well written and more realistic way. Then spin off a 1990's Young Avengers series, more like a Private Eye type of show since none of them have super powers. Except Quill but he only cameo's from time to time. I would put a young Nick Fury assigned to make sure thet stay out of too much trouble.
While I think What If overall has been fun, this episode made me go "I would watch a movie based on this" This episode is extremely well written. Episode 1 was alright, but was overall mid for me. This episode though. Perfect use of a what-if. They could have easily made the episode just the Avengers fighting Quill, but the extra steps it takes makes it so much better.
Also if you noticed the scene where thor shows the seedling and howard says the same thing about droping it into the garbage disposal like tony said in infinity war with the time stone. Like father, like son 😄
11:33 and also the fact there’s only one of that variant kang Which didn’t belong in the main timeline in the first place since he who remains is the kang of that universe. so really most other janet variants never met a version of that kang, since he wasn’t part of the main universe in order to create a possibility. Maybe some do meet an exiled kang variant just not variant of the kang variant in Ant-Man 3
that is absolutely insane that How howard Stark dodged his death by befriending his killer. but yeah it's so surreal on how many events really are transforming
I actually was on the fence about this episode. I'm glad you mentioned Peter's grandfather still being alive, because it really bothered me how they adopted Peter out without even checking to see if he had any living family out there. 😕 This man lost his daughter and his grandson - i.e. the _last_ connection to his daughter - in the SAME NIGHT. That must have been DEVASTATING to him. So did _this_ version of Peter not even _think_ of his grandfather? I also feel that they SERIOUSLY nerfed Thor. Poor guy just can't get a break after _Infinity War_ and _Endgame._ There is _no reason_ for Thor to be THIS weak. Especially considering that this Thor was aged up. Last season's "Party Thor" was more powerful than _this_ version of Thor.
I really liled this episode, but I still feel like there was something missing from the regular formula. I have a question I am begging for an answer too! I've been watching Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness recently, and I realized you've (and other channels too) never said anything about the red streak in the reality that Wanda sent Doctor Strange and Christine too.
Merry Christmas Charlie
Merry Christmas!
While I think What If overall has been fun, this episode made me go "I would watch a movie based on this"
This episode is extremely well written. Episode 1 was alright, but was overall mid for me. This episode though. Perfect use of a what-if. They could have easily made the episode just the Avengers fighting Quill, but the extra steps it takes makes it so much better.
I love to see more of this Avengers 1988 squad.
Also if you noticed the scene where thor shows the seedling and howard says the same thing about droping it into the garbage disposal like tony said in infinity war with the time stone. Like father, like son 😄
I need that tchaka suit
11:33 and also the fact there’s only one of that variant kang
Which didn’t belong in the main timeline in the first place since he who remains is the kang of that universe. so really most other janet variants never met a version of that kang, since he wasn’t part of the main universe in order to create a possibility. Maybe some do meet an exiled kang variant just not variant of the kang variant in Ant-Man 3
One cool what if episode would be the (Avengers 1,000,000 BC)
That would be cool!
Well the 1602 episode will likely be similar to that.
To be honest and its just my opinion I like the MCU in anime vs the real life action but that's just my opinion
that is absolutely insane that How howard Stark dodged his death by befriending his killer.
but yeah it's so surreal on how many events really are transforming
Notice how Peter picked a raccoon at the carnival booth?
Rocket
To me it would of been cool if the Ancient One had joined fight and the team cause she would of been around during this time 😏💯
That's true but she only takes on mystic threats
@@supremekingowl9350 shoot she better helped its to save the world mystical or non mystical but you right
I actually was on the fence about this episode.
Thank you for this video.
My pleasure!
And I agree, Season 2 is off to a cracking start.
Nice!
Since winter soldier starts his redemption arc now, Howard and his wife won't die either...
yep!
That VH comment made sense... many know that Thor tries to look like David Lee Roth
This was a great multiversal phase 5 story. 💯
Wonder when we’re gonna get a what if about the celestial and the eternals
For the yuyuhakusho fans, how’d you love the super spirit gun / kamehameha?
That’s literally where my mind went when Peter shot that energy gun. That was beautifully animated
This episode was incredible! I love every second of it!! Awesome breakdown! 🙏🏽💪
I like this episode too. Also like, that it is 1 episode everyday :)
Lol @ Ego seeing a "ship's log" replay that shows a view of Peter's ship getting attacked from the ground instead of inside of the craft.
i think the "not knowing what beer is" thing is a reference to Loki not know what candy is.
The Universe that was dying, specifically beginning at the 1:26:40 mark. Is it a speedster??? Is it nothing of importance?? Is a Kevin Feige micro clue of some kind?? I'm obsessed with getting an answer to my curiosity.
They coulda thrown a chick on it and made her lame and gay
Peter picks up a stuffed raccoon at the fair before blowing up the stand. It gets decapitated by lasers in the house if mirrors lol
Thank you Charlie.
Thanks!
Your the best of all who explain marvel some othr chanell has a lot of talking😅😅😅
i loved it but i cant help but think it wouldve made more sense for red guardian showed instead of bucky considering it could be good for propaganda
Red Guardian is another Season 2 episode.
