    This is the exact video I was looking for. I just got my iPad mini 5 for sketching thanks to your videos. Thanks for the update! I’m glad it continues to outperform others as your main sketching tablet. It makes me look forward to using mine more often. :)

      Ahhh! I'm so glad to hear that and so glad I could help! Please let me know what you think of the mini! For me its the perfect digital sketchbook and a little extra haha I will try to put videos out on the apps I use but procreate is still great for just getting a sketch down when you have an idea!

    I really appreciate this review, I'm considering an iPad Mini because my Surface Pro 6 is just too bulky to be portable. I'm concerned about giving up access to Windows on the go, and I'm worried that the Mini might not give a smooth enough experience with larger files in Clip Studio Paint. I tried a Surface Go and it really lagged when rotating the canvas. Have you ever noticed any slowdown when scaling and rotating in CSP on the Mini?

    • @tsukepen
      @tsukepen  4 года назад +1

      Hello and thank you for the comment, right up my alley haha the mini is extremely portable and has great battery life so I always take it with me in case I feel like drawing! The experience with clipstudio is not at all frustrating, it might be hard to believe but my typical a4 350dpi canvas with 60+ layers runs smoothly even when pinch zooming and rotating the canvas. There isn't really anything that isn't smooth but some functions like resizing and transforming may take a little bit of time. As far as windows the iPad definitely can't replicate that but the files system and other features of iPadOS have made the mini really useful for me! Let me know if you have any other questions but as far as what you have told me the mini seems like it will suit your needs!

      Aww thank you so much for the wonderful comment and support it really means a lot. I'm always trying to come up with something interesting for everyone to watch and to improve myself. Sometimes it's difficult to come up with the concept of find time for editing but having people comment like you have really makes it worth it! Please let me know if you get the mini 5 and if you have any questions while using it! If you use clipstudio I have a video on a controller accessory that you can program about 8-10 functions which really makes the mini a power house on the go! Unfortunately with procreate and other apps that don't let you rebind keystrokes it doesn't work... Either way I'm sure you'll get a lot done with the mini!

    This video and your general video on the iPad mini 5 solidify on why I want it. I currently have an iPad 9.7” pro which I like to properly sit down for and use for bigger things, but it feels too big when I just sit on the couch and want to draw a little here and there. I’m only a beginner artist and got my iPad way back when I was still a student, but I draw regularly and feel the mini would fill the digital drawing gap that I am currently noticing. Great video and I just subscribed. Oh and your voice is very nice and calming to listen to which is an extra plus!

      @tsukepen  4 года назад

      Thank you so much for the lovely comment! I really appreciate hearing from another 9.7 inch pro user, I still use mine for a lot of work and love it! The mini 5 though is all the 9.7 offers in a super small footprint that can be taken all the time! It is far more inviting and often I found myself drawing for hours at a coffee shop when I meant to be quick haha if you can find a discounted mini 5 it's a great device, I recommend the higher storage option but also there have been rumors of a mini 6. Not too sure what to make of them because the mini isn't as popular as the other iPads but it may be worth waiting until September or a sale! Either way I really appreciate the comment and when I can I will be back with more videos like this! Thank you.

      tsukepen thank you for the reply, I really appreciate it. :) I’ve also seen the rumours about the mini 6 so might hold off for a little while longer, although I am rather impatient and might pull the trigger on the mini 5 before that 😂 My 9.7 still works like it did on day one so I haven’t felt the need to upgrade, also so far I haven’t been the biggest fan of the newer pro designs. For me the mini 6 might be interesting but some rumours say it might have a 9” screen edge to edge like the current pros which would make it feel a lot less like a mini tbh

    • @tsukepen
      @tsukepen  4 года назад +1

      Yeah my pro 9.7 still runs great even with clip studio paint and other demanding programs. For 2d design and drawing I don't think the highest specs are really necessary. If you find a good deal, already have an apple pencil 1 and different lightning accessories it's not a bad thing to get the mini 5. I'm watching the news for the mini 6 but who knows at this point haha I'll definitely get it to review though!

      I might one day get one of the larger sizes if I feel the need for it as I do find the 11" quite appealing, but I think my old 9.7 still has a few more years ahead and the mini will definitely last at least the next 4-5 years too

      If it's an option both of them provide some different strengths, but I feel the majority of the people who will only need one iPad should go with the middle size. It is not much larger than the mini and provided more room to work with and is versatile. For those that ultimately only want a sketchbook the mini could be a good single option if you say have a cintiq at home. Thank you for the comment!

    I have some questions if you'd like to answer them.
    I notice you only use a smart cover (front facing protection) and you don't use a screen protector. Are you not afraid of wear and tear? What does your ipad mini 5 look like now after frequent use? Any scratches?
    I wonder how many GB did you buy on your ipad mini 5? Was it the 64 gb or 256 gb? Was the one you got just enough memory?
    Do you use your ipad mini 5 for anything other than drawing?

    • @tsukepen
      @tsukepen  4 года назад +1

      Hello and thank you for the question! I do not use a screen protector and there are some scratches but nothing major considering I frequently use it and put it in small pockets and bags. I bought the 256 gig because 64 is pretty small for drawing especially when since I want to record video of my drawing process. I feel that with 64gigs you would have to frequently clean off the old files but it is not impossible if you are on a budget otherwise I would highly recommend the larger storage option. Apples cover also makes for a nice drawing angle, one aspect I feel the surface does much better for drawing! I do watch videos and read comics, sometimes edit a small video with lumafusion. In general I have been very impressed with the performance ever since I got it! Occasionally on large drawing files there is slowdown but for most uses it's great!

    Hey, tsukepen! So, I really want to get into digital art. I draw a lot traditionally on my A5 sketch book and I want to finally try drawing on an iPad and I'm thorn between the iPad Mini 5 and the iPad Air 3. For what I care about, both are essentially the same except for the size and the price (which are horrible here in Portugal). So my question is, which one would you recommend for someone who is just now starting to draw traditionally?
    PS: Amazing video, thank you!

    • @tsukepen
      @tsukepen  4 года назад +3

      Thank you so much for the comment! My general recommendation for those that don't own an iPad is to go with the mid sized option. It gives you more room to work and learn with digital art and it of course is a great device for watching videos and surfing the web etc. The size and weight are not so different when you have a regular sized backpack. The mini is great if you want to make sure you have something to take with you everywhere, but I think the medium size strikes a great balance between functionality and portability! As far as price goes its tough to say but if Apple offers refurbished products in Portugal then that may be a good option! Also either way I would go with more than the base storage, iPadOS gets bigger and 64 gigs is barley enough to hold drawings some apps and the OS.... I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!

      @@tsukepen yeah. I'am actually an architect and looking for a digital tool for creating draft drawings and sketches, while having an opportunity to continue developing created sketches on a full blown computer. And having a bigger iPad is somehow a bother, cause all this other stuff I have while going around. The size of a mini is almost perfect, but I have some doubts about it screen size. Does it suffice? I mean sometimes going in detail, writing notes from time to time (even big phones are to small for me as notetaking device with their digital keyboards).

    • @tsukepen
      @tsukepen  5 лет назад

      Thank you so much for the comment! Glad to hear there are so many use cases for these kinds of technology! The mini definitely doesn't add any weight to a bag and can do most if not all of what the bigger ipads can do. As for the size, I suppose it depends on the app. What do you tend to use? I will occasionally write notes in my drawing apps by zooming in a bit to make sure its legible, when I open the files on my desktop they are easy to read. If you're taking small notes or measurements it should be fine! I also use a plastic ruler on the mini for drawing lines or frames for comics and can see the mini handling some basic 3D models if you use those! Your best bet, if you can, would be to go see the mini in person and get a feel for the size. The medium sized air and pro dont make much of a difference when theyre in a bag but if you like to take notes or draft while standing the mini feels really good for stuff like that. If you have any other questions or want know something more specific please feel free to comment any time! Thank you!
      (also just reread your comment. As for note taking with the on screen keyboard it is passable when you need it. It depends on the app but in iPadOS the floating keybaord works pretty well in conjunction with the pencil! I use an app called goodnotes and it is good for drawing basic figures and taking notes in the same app)

    • @tsukepen
      @tsukepen  4 года назад +3

      Hello and thank you for the comment! If you need an iPad for more than just drawing i think its a good place to start your digital drawing journey! In some ways it is similar to drawing on paper but the feeling of the plastic pencil on glass may feel strange at first, but other than that i think its very intuitive to use apps like procreate to start with. I think as a student you would benefit from the larger screen of a medium sized ipad. The mini is great as a sketchbook and it is very powerful but since the screen is smaller you cant really multitask and it may be difficult to get used to drawing with it. The medium sized iPads are still very portable and light weight. If you are taking any kind of backpack with you the difference between the mini and medium sized iPads is not noticeable. In general for your situation I think the 2019 or air 3 would work great! I'd also recommend getting more than 64gigs of storage to keep both school work and drawings! Hope that helps~ let me know if you have any other questions!

I’m just on the fence about the fact that the iPad 2019 doesn’t have a laminated screen, is this gonna be noticeable/ annoying while drawing? Also, I think this would be a great place to start, to have a mini device to the side where I can draw email in a more free way. To conclude I am a beginner after all and I just wanna make sure I make the right decision in getting the right iPad for my first digital art :). Im sorry for the long message, I appreciate you taking the time to answer me.

    • @tsukepen
      @tsukepen  4 года назад +1

      No problem! If you don't need something like multiple apps running for school the benefit of the mini is definitely the ability to take it anywhere so you can always practice. The only thing I would be concerned is if it were too small to learn on. The UI of apps would be smaller and if youre more used to drawing on 8 1/2 by 11 paper then the medium iPad is going to feel similar. I don't know about the display of the 2019 iPad, I haven't used it for drawing but the pencil should be very accurate. If you have an opportunity to go to a store to try them out it should really help you get an idea of what the differences are between the models! The 10.5 inch pro refurbished or used is also a pretty good option! It has a lot of the good features pro motion etc and a larger screen in the same size body!

      @@tommie4140 It is not the best. If you do half and half there isn't much room to do anything on either side. If you do 1/3 to 2/3 you could maybe read an article while taking notes with the pencil(would not recommend on screen keyboard). Or maybe if you want to do fan art and the character sheet on a small window it may work in a pinch. I would recommend using one app and "multitasking" with your phone! Hope that helps~

      Hey thanks for the comment! I got the 256 because I plan to use the mini for a long time and wanted the storage for screen recordings of drawings as well as my music and movies collection

      Thank you for the comment! For sketching I really like procreate which is a one time $9.99 purchase but medibang paint is free and really nice! Hope that helps if you have any other questions feel free to ask!

      There is a new mini 6 that was just announced and I will do a review of it soon! As for the mini 5 it is perfectly capable of being used for drawing!

      @@tsukepen 64gb or 256gb??for drawing..for me 256gb too pricey..😪

      My advice is to get the 256gb model. It is a shame that apple still offers the 64gb option, after a few iPadOS updates several apps and drawings you may be forced to delete some art work to make new ones. The 256gb option is much more comfortable and it would have been nice to see even more storage on the mini 6. It is not impossible to use the 64gb model if you only intend to use the ipad for drawing and have solutions for backing up the artwork you will eventually have to delete for more room.

    how is it working with sidecar

      I don't use side car much. The only Mac drawing app I use is clipstudio and it's available natively on iPad. When I need to connect to a computer to use the iPad as a drawing tablet I use Easycanvas. I made a video about it here ruclips.net/video/KUaTVF99A1U/видео.html
