It’s too premature to make this claim. The process is not at scale so the energy input cost and the production of high quality graphene value is still net negative. However this seems very promising particularly with introduction of ML to control the thermolysis.

I remember what you were saying in Metaxas' SitC event a while back where you were talking about graphene use in neurological technologies; pretty wild stuff if that can be used to help heal spinal and other injuries/pathologies. Sounds also like the process to create graphene is also a more efficient and cost-effective means of recycling and getting back precious/rare earth elements out of previously mfgd products. To me, this is a BIG keypoint, as you consider the tons of plastic and other trash filling landfills, electronic trash being dumped in African coastal countries, etc., we have got to do a much better job of stewardship regarding the trash that is generated in the world. William McDonough (architect) and Michael Braungart (chemist) co-authored a book called "Cradle to Cradle" that talks a lot more about these concepts and gives practical examples in architecture and materials manufacturing. A problem I see here is that anyone intending to develop a process for producing Graphene on a massive scale has to consider that whichever process they choose to implement may soon be superceeded by a superior process because the science is still developing so rapidly. We already do. What's happening now is the developing of methods that can produce graphene at much lower costs, so that in the future we will see much more of it. When will all of this become commonplace and relatively cheap? No one knows. It will take years because we are talking about rebuilding global structures, but it's coming in various forms.

At aprox 20:26 there is a slide showing an alternative to combusting CH4, which produces CO2, and the alternative will produce H2O.... what I understand is water has a la lager capacity than CO2 to act as a greenhouse gas, WHAT IS THE BENEFIT, in terms of global warming, in doing that?? Another related question, CO2 is the basis for life on earth (plants need it to live), why all the trouble to reduce our emissions??

We already do. What's happening now is the developing of methods that can produce graphene at much lower costs, so that in the future we will see much more of it. When will all of this become commonplace and relatively cheap? No one knows. It will take years because we are talking about rebuilding global structures, but it's coming in various forms.

It's important to realize that this is all very new, and we are still experimenting with graphene applications. But like I said, the biggest problem with widespread graphene use has been cost of manufacture. This new method promises to solve this problem. As Dr. Tour pointed out in the presentation, over the next few years more companies will be created that use this new method of graphene manufacture. Once graphene manufacture becomes more widespread and commonplace, then we will begin to see more applications of it.
How long will that be? No one knows, of course, but we can reasonably expect to see some things sooner than later, perhaps starting in the next ten years or so for some more simple and smaller uses.
