This video is why my wife and I love following you guys. Your honesty and no-BS approach is refreshing and we find ourselves connecting to that quite a bit. We've dealt with similar thoughts for years and between the pandemic and setting ourselves up (whether that means financially or otherwise), we feel pretty close to pulling the trigger. In our case, it'll mean traveling indefinitely but keeping our jobs/work/side hustles alive while doing so. It's going to be challenging but we know it'll be worth it. We're currently in Mexico feeling things out for a month and then we'll take it from there! Keep on kicking ass, guys. If ever we're in the same place at the same time, dinner/drinks are on us.

Imagine i did jobs i didnt like for at least 15 years after uni, now i feel hopeless and lost, wasting money in renting rooms in big cities to survive. My only passion is travel and music, hard to live with that sadly, that's why i always needed a job to sustain that passions. Now i am struggling really and thought i lost years of life and i dont like any job at all. Hard times
These are hard times, and man - I totally understand that feeling you're having. Starting this YT channel was an exercise in that - my only passions are travel and storytelling, so this was the only thing that made any sense to do. It's a long, hard, sometimes so overwhelmingly-stupidly-impossibly-huge-task to succeed on this platform that we think about giving up weekly. But what would we do if did give up? I can't even imagine. It wouldn't feel right, and I would always regret not giving this dream everything I had.
I hope you find some way to do the things you love, even if it requires sacrificing things or only doing those things part of the time. I wish I knew what to say, but just know that we get you, and how you're feeling.

First off, yall are awesome 💜 I think the hardest thing about this kind of lifestyle is the #1 fear - having to announce to everyone that you are doing this wacky new thing, (because you need their support & need to get the word out!) but now you have all eyes on you! I think that has been the hardest part for us, the pressure to succeed that we put on ourselves for the sake of proving that we can do this lifestyle.

Hey guys! I love your channel and this is exactly why. You guys are very honest and transparent, and I love how you lay out all of your feelings for us, making it easier to connect with the two of you. I am 25 now, and have never thought about leaving everything behind to fulfill my dreams of learning more about the cultures I'm interested in, specially the languages... I leave this video with a lot of thoughts on my mind, trying to figure out if there is a space in my life for something like this... I started working very young at a very big tech company, which makes me think I am way ahead of my age. But the I can do this now, in my 20s, in my 30s, in my 40s, anytime. Thank you for being an inspiration. I often think about Lisa and Josh, and wish you two are happy wherever you are. ❤

Love the honesty in this video. There's a lot of phony garbage on YT that hides the real life behind-the-scenes aspects of full-time traveling. Looking forward to the other parts to this topic! Our family still holds our normal 9-5 jobs but we work hard to put the pieces together to coordinate long-term traveling & remote work opportunities. Love your videos, and there’s great info here. Appreciate your transparency (and spreadsheets!). I’d add though that it’s really important to figure in the cost of lost income and investment contributions before doing this. $35k is just the direct cost. That said, you’ve definitely got me thinking hard about living life now instead of always working/planning/saving for some vague future retirement that may not come soon enough to enjoy. Planning and saving for a concrete goal like you did is the key. And that white board is everything. Brilliant idea.
that's a great point we hadn't taken into consideration! we understand that feeling--it often felt hard to save for our future when we knew we wanted to travel more now :) love a good spreadsheet and white board--yess!!!

Follow up, I appreciate Lisa talking about not hating her job. My husband and I are both nurses and we've spent the last 20ish years raising kids and working. And we don't hate out careers, but we want to do some different things.

Lots of good information! I really appreciate your honesty. You both seem to relate and come across well. Fear is what's keeping me from traveling right now...all the testing, quarantine, rules, etc. I like both this and the rolled ice cream videos but think this one is better based on having more useful information. That's just me. The ice cream video was more fun.

Hi Lisa and Josh, Simelar experience to myself. Over 30 years ago now, We organised a job in NZ over the phone, before internet! and rented our house and set of with our 6 month old baby for two years of adventures in NZ,Australia and Tahiti. We returned back to the UK, and now all these years later our grown up children have the travel bug and travel as often as they can all over the world! Work can always wait!

If I were a potential employer, I might wonder if I should take a chance on someone who might pick up and leave after I have invested my trust and benefits on them. Some companies might mot want to invest on someone that will leave the moment they have a bad day. I wish i didn't havevto work and had the ability to do what you do. It work for you, so as long as you can continue to feel fulfilled.....do it and many blessings.
Hello Lisa and Josh, The difference in your approach is remarkable. Australia is a long way from anywhere. Since the 1960's people have travelled abroad to escape the cultural drudgery which existed in those times. This tradition hasn't changed since then though culturally we're much more enriched now. Travelling overseas for 3 to 5 years is completely normal and almost expected although these are always working holidays. No-one really ever thinks it through they just set out. Thankyou so much for this video

Life is too short and I find that things usually work out in the end so it’s worth taking the risk.
Other people said to me you are so lucky to be going to NZ for two years. This job was organised over the phone ..yes before the internet over 30years ago.! I believe you make your own luck and there is always a lot of planning involved. For me it was renting a house out taking a 6 month old baby with us and not knowing what would happen on our return.
Well 30 years later our grown up children are now travelling the world and I’m proud that they maybe got the travel bug from us….and yes we’re still travelling and having adventures on the way

just did that, actually doing that right now and we would have regret it, when we wouldnt have started.. covid was holding us back, but time never stops..
yeah, there's no telling when, or if, any of this stuff is going to end. it feels like it's been going on forever, and that it will continue to go on forever. don't give into the hopelessness though! there's so much you can do right now, if you can only find the energy to! we struggle with it all the time, but getting out of the house and doing something is still legal, so do it while you can :)

Thank you for sharing! Have you ever been bored or tired from traveling? At the end of the travel I am sad to finish the vacation but also at the same time I’m excited to go back home and rest. That’s why I haven’t traveled more than two weeks so far. So I’m just curious if you ever felt this way too.
Great question! We definitely get that sentiment--as with any full time/long term anything, we find ourselves getting a bit run down. we either start missing home or a semblance of home or just straight up getting tired of sightseeing all the time. Which is why we decided to stay in Chiang Mai for a month, instead of trying to go on to the next place. We've overall found that the lifestyle suits us and we still enjoy being on the road right now :)
A few things. I did quit a 17 year job to take a 30 day cruise from Rome to Bangkok. I understand the fear. My question is I’m more your parents age and I have already traveled the world many times but what do you do about health insurance? I also have a condo full of stuff. Do I just pick it up and leave or do I rent out my condo etc. etc. luckily I don’t have many responsibilities so I would love to jump on the bandwagon and travel full-time. Where to go would not be a problem especially watching your wonderful videos. Thank you.

So you each outlined your upbringing and other factors about each of you as individuals. I may have missed it but I did not hear about you both as a couple. I have questions: are you married?, do you plan to get married?, do you want to have children? Do you put money away for the future? Thanks.
As someone hoping to travel full time in 2023, my biggest fear is routine/comfort zone. Do we fall into a routine just because we are tied to a job with consistent expenses and responsibilities…or is it in our dna. Unlike a vacation where you just pause the responsibility button, I want to flourish, learn and become the best version of me while I travel. The thought of sitting in an Airbnb in Istanbul clinging to RUclips, Netflix and eating bad imitation American junk food just for some normalcy would make me feel like a total utter failure. The planning, the navigation, the learning all fit my personality but connecting with people and risking embarrassment are skills that have eroded over time.
Ok, so bottom line I guess is will travel be able to change me or will I sabotage my experience.😧
Wow, this is such a great question and one that we often grapple with as well. We both find that we thrive off of the new and the challenges that traveling full time brings us-like you mention, the planning, navigation, learning new languages, putting ourselves out there. It can be uncomfortable sometimes, but so so worth it. They help us feel like we are learning and growing, often from others. But we also love the routines sometimes-at least I (Lisa) do ☺️ it can feel mundane and not living our best lives to do things we would’ve been doing when back at home or in our previous routines. Then you add on the layer of social media telling us “this is how your travel days should look like and feel every single day”-it doesn’t help with the feeling of guilt and fomo. I think rather than thinking of it as one way over the other, we’ve found that a mix has been really freeing and that there has been a place and purpose for both the new and the routine .
Doing laundry doesn’t sound exciting, but it’s a routine necessity. And as it turns out, dodging traffic to cross 4 busy streets while carrying two loads of laundry to a new laundromat, figuring out how to get tokens for the machines with just Thai instructions, and making the mistake of not taking off your shoes before entering was an adventure in itself! Traveling to new countries has its way of doing that to you, even if you think you are stuck in routine (like I did.) whether we think it will happen or not, traveling changes us , often times for the better.😀

You are so lucky to be American and to live in such a flexible country. For instance, in France, when you are unemployed or if you take a leave for more than 6 months, employers are starting to question you every way possible, considering you are unstable. You need to justify yourself for being off market. They would never understand that you would take time off to travel. They would fear to hire you and then you decide to leave again. You don't seem to have this mindset in the US.
Japan is very safe for solo female travelers.

Just curious what you guys do when you want or need some alone time....cant be easy being in each other's space most of the day and night.
Great q! We've found that if we find things that each of us can do that we enjoy, it helps a lot. For example, Josh likes to run and play video games somedays and I like to wander around the nearby shops and dance. So if we can have our alone time to do that, that's great! The space issue can be hard sometimes, but we've managed to make it work :)

@@stevecameron52 Ooh that's a great q too! One that we will definitely have to talk more about in a future video too. The short answer is that we decided we wanted to encourage others to actually travel themselves as well. There is a lot of content out there of people traveling, both beautiful and inspiring, but we've been those people before just watching others live out the dreams we had. When we left, we heard people say "you're living the dream!" "I wish I could do that" or "I could never do that." So we wanted to show how we travel, including all the little decisions/big decisions, with the hopes that it helps others actually do it as well.
What about retirement plans?

Great question! We surprisingly have gotten used to it over time. And once we sold all of our things and moved, we realized how little we actually needed. Though some might say we’ve been preparing for this for a while with Josh wearing the same black tees even while we were at home in hawai’i 😂
Why didn't you travel in your 20's? You're now in the prime working years of your life. Not judging, more concerned (like as a "parent" way).
Traveling alone as a woman in Japan is not the same as traveling in other countries alone as a woman. It's not really a fair comparison to make.
Agreed! Japan is an awesome place to solo travel in (female or not). Was not really making a comparison to other countries, but would also add 15+ other countries to that list of countries I've felt safe to travel alone in as a woman
Big deal. Compare this to doing it when there was no internet and you are on your own to move 12000 miles and have made a commitment to a new job. You have your partner, you can call/see your family any time you like and can just check stuff out on the internet. There is little risk, there is less sense of adventure as you can see it all before you get there. Try going 6 months at a time without seeing your family and having to budget everything to set up in a new country. This is a walk in the park.
you're definitely right! we constantly think about how challenging it would be to lead this life without all the resources and technology we are grateful to have. I can only imagine the courage it took my parents to leave their home countries on their own, not knowing the language, and being without any family or friends, to forge a new path for themselves and their families. it's amazing and we will try to never take that for granted.
Big question is $$$$ money dinero lol ..

Mistake I made was to be born in a 3rd world country then migrating to a 1st world one late career.. money won't be there till I'm 60.
yeah - everyone's situation is different for sure - but you might find that going on a big trip is much cheaper than you think!
@@LisaAndJosh yea the trip is is probably covered by renting my house out alone! Giving up the year's income is the pain, that adds more than a year to the rat race and once you're old, employment isn't as easy.
