I think the people who have commented here do not appreciate the cost of running a shop - council tax, rent, gas, electric, insurance, phone bills. If there is an employee there will be their wages, employers NI and pension contributions. There is the cost of security - my parents shop was broken into several times over 20 years. Some items will sit in a shop cabinet for years or my even be “shop lifted”. The only items people bring to the programme are things they don’t want - often no one else will want them as they are out of fashion.

The auction calculations the DD performs on camera are a bit modest. Most auction rooms have a “normal” rate and a business rate. I think the programme production team are getting the business rate that would not normally be open to the public. The programme also ignores the buyers premium which can add another 20%. There will be VAT added to all the commissions. If a buyer is willing to pay £100 they will only bid £80 as they know the buyers premium will be added. I recently bid £200 for an item but had to pay £260 including fees.
