Just 20 minutes from Queenstown, the best driving route to reach Arrowtown is along the scenic Shotover Gorge crossing over the Edith Cavell parabolic arch bridge.
Upon arriving you'll discover a delightful gold rush village nestled below beautiful mountain peaks and surrounded by the sparkling Arrow River.
Arrowtown has maintained its rich heritage and historic buildings amazingly well. You can also visit the Chinese Settlement which gives an interesting insight into the town's gold mining history.
In addition, Arrowtown has a range of museums, cafes, restaurants, bars, and several boutiques selling homeware, souvenirs, wool, and designer clothing.
The Lakes District Museum on Buckingham Street is known as one of the best small museums in New Zealand. It is the focal point for the history of Arrowtown and the surrounding areas and also known as the major Information Centre of the town.
Like Queenstown, it is also a great place for hiking or biking and has easy access to the ‘Queenstown Trail,’ with tracks leading to Gibbston valley, Lake Hayes, and Queenstown. The city is also famous for many smaller walking trails and cycle tracks and has access to the famous Macetown and Motatapu tracks. With four world-class ski areas between 20 - 60 minutes’ drive away, Arrowtown is also a popular base for snow enthusiasts during winter.
