thanks to the Book of Bill we got some new info, and apparently before they came to gravity falls dipper overheard a fight between their parents that he wasn't supposed to hear, and if mabel knew about that it makes that moment so much more meaningful :')

This is exactly why Mabel is such a over hated character. That’s what I like about Gravity Falls is that the characters are human and both sides win and Dipper and Mabel Pines are my second favorite cartoon sibling relationship, with my most favorite being Phineas, Ferb, and Candace. I find Mabel funny and I find both Dipper and Mabel relatable. Also Mabel didn’t intent to start Weridmageddon, didn’t force Dipper to give up being Ford’s assistant, and you can’t blame her for being afraid of growing up.

Mabel truly is one of the best people in the entire show. As awkward or quote-unquote "annoying" she can be, she truly is pure of heart and knows what's right and what to do. I think Mable is one of the best characters in the show. She’s such a sweetheart and so courageous and carefree! She always manages to find the positives in bleak situations. Even in the literal apocalypse, she manages to find ways to have fun and make people happy! No wonder the people in this show like her so much, she’s such a ray of sunshine and I love her! She always manages to put a smile on my face in all the ways I can imagine. Whether that be when she’s trying to be funny and succeeding or being the sweetest bean in the entire show. Plus, she’s genuinely a great sister to Dipper, niece to Stanly and Stanford, and friend to the entire town! Plus, plus, she’s genuinely badass and fights with her blood, sweat, tears, and other fluids! We need more people like Mable in real life.

I tbh think the unicorn (idk how to spell her name) is supposed to represent the Mabel haters in gravity falls fandom, I mean the way she says “it’s not my fault you’re a bad person” is just so something one of Mabel’s haters would say
as i've become more defensive of mabel (i want to open up with 'i like her' because my opinion might read confusingly from how the rest of this is written), i've realized that a big part of why mabel is disliked in this regard (alongside the obvious complaints the fandom levies against her) might be because she kinda has to initiate a lot of supernatural/monster of the week conflict for the show to work as a result of how she's set up
she's more directly 'responsible' for problems in her episodes whereas dipper can kinda stumble into a conflict without being 'at fault' for it. usually dipper's stories in that style are cases of 'something he did goes out of control' like fight fighters or double dipper, ones he walks into the supernatural stuff like vs. manliness or northwest mansion, or the pretty common complaint episodes where both twins are 'at fault' for something, whether it's one problem combined like time traveller's pig or one problem each like sock opera (which aren't episodes i take any issue with)
mabel can't really walk her way into the conflicts of episodes like dipper can because she's not actively a mystery hunter or anything like that, so she usually has to make some sort of 'bad' decision or choice that leads into that gravity falls-style conflict coming into the episode. she has to not turn down gideon for hand that rocks the mabel to work, she has to make fun of dipper for little dipper to work, she has to try keeping the clones for boyz crazy to work, she has to steal the love god potion for love god to work, she has to make fun of dd&md for the dd&md episode to work (or more realistically 'make the sibling parallel the episode's based on to work'), so on
there's obviously exceptions (dipper with scary-oke and mabel with golf war, for instance), but generally, both characters usually do something wrong in the end, but dipper's issues are more presented as a lack of foresight in his decision or external personal conflicts that get dragged into the main stuff of the episode whereas mabel making a bad choice usually ends up being why an episode can happen. it makes sense for their characters - dipper's smart in the moment, but still immature enough to not think his choices through, whereas mabel's impulsivity/desire to keep things nice and happy means that she ends up making a lot of more immediately bad snap judgements/decisions -- but i think if mabel ended up having more dipper-style conflicts for her episodes people would be a lot less critical of her 'worst' moments and understand the 'well-meaning' half of 'childish but well-meaning' is way more important to her as a character
what im just hearing is that while both character have flaws, one of them is most socially acceptable than the other

I didn't watch gravity falls until a couple years ago when my friend let me use his Hulu account. Before watching it, I'd watched some random gravity falls videos that showed up on my RUclips recommended. So I watched The Mabel Video, the one that explains that she's the most evil and horrible and selfish and sick and twisted character in the history of fiction. I went into the show KNOWING that I'd hate her because she was awful! The fandom said so! And then I watched gravity falls. And she was literally just a kid. The amount of hate she got was insane, especially in comparison to Dipper (not trying to hate on Dipper but...summoning zombies to prove a point, traveling through time to get a girl that Doesn't Like You to go out with you, and deciding to leave your family behind to travel with your weird uncle seems pretty selfish! Double standards). I am now her biggest defender. I love her and she's the best.

One thing I absolutely love about Mabel is that even when she makes mistakes, she owns up to them the best she can. And one thing she does that not a lot of characters do - she says “I’m sorry.”

People act like Mabel is this horrible person when she isn’t, she’s 12 and hasn’t figured out who she is yet so yeah she will make mistakes that she learns from. Also Weirdmageddon was literally not her fault, Bill literally manipulated her and used her fear of abandonment and losing her brother against her, and guess what? She realizes that no matter what, her and Dipper will always have each other’s back and went back with Dipper
Not to mention how she immediately showed remorse the moment she saw Blendin's eyes possessed by Bill realizing that she made a mistake.

Idgaf what anyone says I love Mabel more than anything. I really relate to her fear of growing up. I also love how hyper she is and relate to that as well. Goodness. Recently rewatched the entire show. VIVIDLY remember the HATE she got for being Selfish. Well, i have counted, with great attention. Dipper has been selfish waaaaaay more often than her, and when i was a kid he was definitely my favorite and i still love him a lot. His selfishness drives sooo many episodes. Mabel gets a lot of hate and some of it is (begrudgingly) justified. I mean no one wants to see a kid act like they might have when they were that age. But she comes through a lot of the time. That deserves at least recognition which I will say is one of my critiques of Gravity Falls. We never got a poignant episode that tries to cut Mabel some slack. We got it for Stan and Ford, and even Dipper, Soos, and Wendy got one. So I think most of the problems originate there

Being a kid is the time to make mistakes and learn how to improve. I wish the show had more of her learning from her mistakes, but as it is, Mabel messes up, and that’s okay. She’s a kid. I heard some people say her character development is more subtle than Dipper's but I'm not really sure about that. Although she notably develops in episodes like Sock Opera, Society of the Blind Eye and Weirdmageddon 2: Escape from Reality
@@NickoRandom2020 I'd argue that although Sock Opera and Escape from Reality does TRY to give her development, it fails flat cus both of those stories are still Dipper-centered where he has the make the major sacrifice and take the end short of the stick while Mabel ends with a half-assed lesson.
With Sock opera the Sock puppet guy she wanted to impress ended up being a weirdo so she didn't really suffer from her failing and moved on the spot. In Escape from Reality she does learn to actually allow Dipper to have his own space and decisions but at this point he straight up decides to NOT be with Ford and instead be with her "forever" so she literally doesn't have to deal with a separation in the immediate future unlike what would have happened in the hypothetical scenario of Dipper following Ford under his tutelage. She learn to be prepared for a loss that was understandable yet superable but said loss never came in the end.
@@JoshuaDMarti I could agree, but in case you haven't heard of it, in Lost Legends: Don't Dimension It (written by Alex Hirsch), she realizes that's she's self-centered to Dipper a number of times and apologizes for not only causing Weirdmageddon but also for all the selfish things she's done all summer, it's a good closure even if the book seemingly frames her _solely_ for causing Weirdmageddon for some reason. It's for those who think her growth moments in the main series aren't enough, some could say it still isn't enough though but I'm open for thoughts.

The thing people don’t understand about Mabel or just other female characters that are way too over hated is that people are not 1 dimensional. You can be a good person and do bad things. You can be a bad person and do good things. Mabel is a good person in my opinion but she’s 12 for a majority of the series. she’s really young. Young people do bad and stupid stuff. Don’t pretend you’ve been an angel since day one. People have flaws. It’s our nature. And Mabel is human. She’s a 12 year old immature child. Yes that doesn’t excuse her actions but it is a good explanation for most if not all of them.
