*This is really a jewl of cinema ! Anyone who is a counoseur knows that trailers didn't do justice to movies back then most of the times. The atmosphere is unique and just for that should be watched . I think it's the only movie that captures Venice in such a real way. More than this ,all characters, actions and landscape feel so real and organic compared to modern movies. It really takes you back to 70's Italy. I'm an european , not italian but I remember the 90's Venice and it wasn't so different than shown here. The little details are so great in this movie . For a normal american viewer, the details might seem like a filler or pointless but for people who really lived before 2000's know how great this movie is !*

I love how this film plays with the viewers perception of what is going on in several scenes like John Baxter seeing his own funeral before it happens, but a first time viewer will see that as Laura being put under some sort of spell by the sisters and not actually going back to England to check up on their son. Scenes are filled with dread and very sinister images and strange character interactions.
The way this movie deals with grief and loss and foreshadowing is absolute genius there is a scene that always catches me off guard like when Laura is telling John about the blind psychic sister informing her that Christine is happy and well in the afterlife and then the next scene you see the two sisters laughing hysterically which makes you question are they genuine or a bunch of scam artists pretending to be psychic it's scenes like that that make this movie such a unique and unforgettable experience.

Can't expect young people to understand things from the past. They have not been exposed to too many things. More than the depth of judgement, they lack a depth in range of experiences. Unless they go and see lots of old movies ( and in fairness this specific one is not an old movie, if put in context...) they can never acquire that range. On the other hand I see and hear them often praising new style movies that lack in real substance but are full of visual (and often cheap ) trickery and unrealistic plots often based on a pseudo future, like, just to mention one Blade runner 2. A total bullshit of a movie. Kind of sad...

There is something so incredibly unnerving about her.
The way she sniggers just before she turns around and kills John is what made me absolutely terrified of her. Couldn’t sleep after that ending.
The thing is, she has no idea about Christine or anything else that has happened with John, (how could she, she’s just a serial killer running around Venice after all) but she knows she has another victim in her trap and that makes her smile. Uncanny beyond belief. Great film.

Keep in mind that in the first part of the 1970s, Venezia, Italia had become quite popular with English-American filmmakers. Almost all of th flicks partially shot there had something to do with death. This flick here seems to be your usual 100% British low-budgeter horrorific flick intended purely for British home grown audiences. Which is why it failed huge time in the States. Here on YT, you will find dozens if not Hundreds of British horror flicks from the late 60s and 70s. Almost none of which is any good, really.
