The best way I have found to learn this style of playing is to play the chords with the alternating bass line, then alternate a simple melody with the high e and b strings on the offbeats with the bass line. Once you get this bass-melody-bass-melody pattern going, you can start going back and adding the embellishments that make up the melody of the particular song.
No, for real, . . this is a GREAT lesson-- definitely ordering the thumbstyle dvd, only wish he had one with extensive Merle and Chet tunes-- his explanations are so short but on the money with anyone with a knowledge of basic chords-- it connects the dots so to speak. Great.
So many factors contribute to thumb wraps finger size. neck thickness and wideness. string height action and that small distance from the edge of fretboard to the low e string.
Mose Rager was a fingerstyle guitarist, Mose played a very unique style with more of a strum on the bass strings of the chord rather than an alternating bass line.
Taylor makes a great sounding, great playing guitar and I begrudge Bob Taylor nothing. But it does seem like they're everywhere. Plus there are hundreds of fine guitars out there that are not Taylors. My '66 J45 sounds better now than it did "in the day" even with most of the varnish gone from the sides. The back is like new, go figure.

Glad I watched this again. Pat Kirtley is a superb picker and teacher. Thanks Pat and Mr Grossman for making it happen.
I can play the bass, I can play the melody, just not at the same time. Aaaah it drives me crazy. Good job Buddy! Nice lesson thanks.
This is how my pa-pa would play this jam, just like old Merle and I’m determined to learn it myself
