  • We finish changing the front brakes on this MGB. They were making noise, but it's exactly the same if your pads are just worn or the rotors rusted and pitted. Changing disc brakes is one of the first jobs amateur mechanics learn after things like changing oil or a fan belt. It's relatively easy, requires no special tools, and you can see the difference right away (so you get that instant gratification!). Not feeling up to the task, and near Chicago? Helpful video. Thnx. for sharing it.
Ill be replacibg my front splined hubs, bearings, brake rotors, and pads soon. Similar procedure except i have to press in the new bearing carriers into the new hubs, do the shimming procedure, and grease/pack the new bearings. Good stuff for both wire wheel MGBs as well as the four bolt wheels.

Have had a problem with brake squeal for years on my BGT, have used copper grease on the back of the pads or gloop, even rubber shims and also cut some alloy shims which can help but noise came back, now I'm advised that it's down to glazed discs, have carefully sanded off the face side of each disc and there is a slight improvement I may go the whole hog and take the discs off the car and sand the inner faces or have been thinking of an upgrade and may just replace with a 4pot caliper kit... but of course will cost more.

Make sure the bearings and axles, etc are also in good shape too.

Curious why you did not install the caliper then pull the pads ?

Good question--it would definitely work that way and is arguably easier. In this case it was force of habit. Most modern cars you can't pull the pads with the calipers on... so I instinctively put the pads in first this time. I don't always on the old cars, and you don't have to either. Both ways work, but good catch and thanks for sharing the comment!
