I knew Roy. He gave us our first break at the Woolwich Sunsplash festival in London. Despite our muscial style being quite different. Kind and welcoming and spread that spiritual sunshine around. Loved him! Rest in Peace my friend.

Listening to what this guy is saying about the history of Jamaica music fraternity, mento was around hundreds of years before he was born. Man like Alton Ellis singing from in the 1950s, and the very first Jamaican to recorded a song was Harry Belanfonte in the 1950s.They useto called it folks songs, island in the sun, carry me ackees to Linstead Market not a quaty Worth sell, Also there was a man named Vere John born in the 1880,was the main foundation of the Jamaican music fraternity. He went to the United States in 1924 to New York City, promoting music, also recruiting people to sing and. He returned to Jamaica in 1939 and started to recruiting people to sing, like the wailers, John Holt, Alton Ellis, Millie Small, Dobby Dobson, just to mentioned a few of them. Vere John useto used 4 theaters to recruit people to sing,I remember listening to his show on RJR radio station,as Vere John opportunities show.Anybody you are talking to and they don't go through Vere John opportunities show, they are very young. I remembered when he died in 1966, man like Duke Ried is doing music from in the 1950s,Man like Derrick Morgan, Prince Buster, Desmond Dekker, Roy Shirley, Ken Parker, Slim Smith, Alton Ellis, Millie Small, Dobby Dobson, Justin Hinds, Larry Marshall,Toots and the Maytals. I remembered in 1962 when Derrick Morgan sing the song for the Jamaica independence august 6 th 1962 and. It was Derrick Morgan and Prince Buster running Jamaica musically in the 1960s, that the pm Hugh Shearer haveto called both of them to stop the feud. I useto go out by Randy's at north Parade and,by Prince Buster down orange street. Those two guys was Jamaica most popular singers, you got to be very careful in those days. Anybody can tell about Derrick Morgan and Prince Buster feud in the 1960s, this is no joke.
I born come see my uncle playing music before he was born,my uncle born in 1920 into a mento band in those days. He played both guitar 🎸 and banjo, so when you hear some people is talking like is them invented music in Jamaica. It is a big joke, because mento music was around for hundreds of years, which our foreparents brought from Africa. Ska, rockstead and reggae just came in the 1960s, Desmond Dekker was called the king 👑 of ska, Alton Ellis was called king 👑 of rockstead and Bob Marley was called king 👑 of reggae music,Toots won the 1st festival in 1966, the Jamaican won in 1967 and Desmond Dekker won in 1968 then Toots won in 1969 and the list goes on and on.The man that responsible for some of the beats or rethytm in Jamaica, was King 👑 Tubbys and Lee scratch Perry. I know both of them in person from in the 1960s, because I was living very close to King Tubbys studio 🎙️ in Waterhouse in the 1960s, Also Perry was on Washington Blvd in Washington Gardens.
Back in the mid 70s I had a friend who had recently come from Jamaica. I remember him telling me about this man. I had no idea who he was but his name stuck in my head. He said this man could cry on stage
I LUV THIS SONG!! I WAS A YOUTH IN THE 60S IN JAMAICA 🇯🇲 THIS SONG SUNG TO MY SOUL!! IT STILL SINGS TO MY SOUL IN MY 70S!! HEART❤ THANK YOU MR ROY SHIRLEY! REST IN PEACE!! ❤ 🙏 ❤YOU ARE A REAL JAMAICAN LEGEND!!!
When a person like "King Roy Shirley" that nearly every single Jamaican had loved, in his heyday, was been exalted in the positive, that feeling from that fame will make any sensible person start's putting more value on themselves and conclude what they think that they truly deserves. In that case, the money that some people might feel is a lot, to him and others who people will start to hawk or begs for money etc, that amount of money would not in that time considered enough or sufficient, because of the expenses that would grow as their popularity grows. More money is, sometimes automatically, more miseries. People without a clue can and will, talk about what they assume but doesn't know about.
It's long debated for sure. Take It Easy's recording date is before Shirley's stuff and Altons stuff. Definitely called Rock Steady by Ellis. I believe Rock Steady became it's own when Queen Majesty was recorded because it has no hold overs from ska. All the early so called Rock Steady songs are basically a slower tempo ska
Roy Shirley don't know what he saying late 60s him no get no 10 pound fi that da song say man look up di Road and down di Road and take the record from him give him 10 pounds lie him a tell
