Hans van Manen has added another masterpiece to his already impressive series of piano ballets in which he combines several of his greatest strengths. In Kammerballett, the decor is not a decor but a totally functional part of the choreography. The white oval-shaped performing area simply defines the interior and the exterior. The eight white 'Rietveld' stools carried in and set down by the dancers when they first appear to seem to have the same simple function. Literally and figuratively, they give the dancer a place, either as a seated spectator or as a reason to start moving again.
