  • I am so excited to share this video because I finally was able to do en plein air with my updated easel in some gorgeous places in the Rockies!
Some of you might remember one of my first videos where I thrifted a $4 desktop easel. I had lots of amazing comments and ideas from all of you :) So I decided to continue working on my easel and turn it into my own little magical plein air pouchade box!
I would love to hear from you if you have any ideas about what I can do to improve my easel :) Or if you have any favorite DIY art projects of your own you're working on right now.

I made a plein air easel using my tripod and a small piece of ply wood- I drilled out an area for the nut. I counter sunk several circles to put magnets in the top to hold my small metal paint box. I tape watercolor paper directly in the board or clamp a sketch book. I clamp on a cloth and I hang the water (a little bucket with a handle) from a large “s” hook that goes into a hole in the side of the board (I drilled it into the side- using the s hook to measure how far in to drill.
Not sure if this is making any sense😂.
Honestly I don’t think I have ever used the same set up exactly twice😂- it’s an ever evolving process!
My favorite to date is carrying everything in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid- then I sit on the bucket and hold my little corrugated plastic painting board (much like yours)on my lap. Not good for long hikes- but the painting is comfy (I added a foam cushion to the bucket lid).😉

This does make sense!! What a great idea to just make a sturdy board with holes for clips and I love the idea of the magnets sunk into the board! I’ll have to buy and learn some power tools for all the things I want to make - including something like your setup! 😝 and I like your bucket seat idea too, I like my backpacking chair for when I go on hikes, but maybe a seat that I can keep my knees at a 90 degree would be nice also. 🙌🏼

@@jaclynbaerart the bucket is cumbersome for sure!😂 my kids tease me and say I always look like I’m going camping when I head out to paint- because I usually carry a chair , tripod, back pack, snack etc😂. I did make myself a small basics kit and I really loved the freedom of it- I haven’t needed to pack along a complete studio🤦🏻‍♀️😂

Put some weight on the hook under your tripod, it stops the wind from ruining your day! I use a clamp for my water pot and hang it using a Carabiner

So smart to put weight so it won’t topple over!! Thank you thank you!!

I love how you finished the box; it looks really nice and professional! For the bottom, don’t remove the feet if they are wooden. Instead, attach a piece of 1/2” plywood to the feet using screws. Install a T-nut or a threaded insert in the plywood first to attach to your tripod. Test the nut or the insert first on your tripod screw as some of them are not compatible with the tripod screws.

That’s a good idea - thank you! I’ll probably ask a woodworking friend to have some scraps to make the attachment for the bottom. And maybe use his tools too 😝 I’m having fun working on this box to make it more workable for my paintings!

@@jaclynbaerart Thanks! Make sure the screws aren’t too long so that they wouldn’t poke through to the inside of the box. I tend to make mistakes like that 😂

Why don't you pull the drawer out and put you pallet and cup there. This is what I do. Have the same unit as you do.

😊 We have a box similar to yours. I may try the same with the new hardware. I don't know if i would cut a hole in the drawer for cup? Items may then fall out while traveling? Just a thought. I have loads of ideas but just too many to list her. 😂 Take care... I always enjoy your vids. 💛🙏😘
