I wish I had these tips years ago when there was nothing out there. :-) You also need one other basic: Pippy lying down in his maze, so happy and content.
One of the best life saving items I keep in my emergency kit are SQ fluids and apparatus. My vet of many years ago insisted I overcome my needle phobia (yeh, I used to pass out over needles) and learn how if I was going to move forward into rescue work. Knowing how to help hydrate animals has been a literal life saver more than a few times over the years for both my own animals, my fosters, orphans and friends' animals. I would encourage people to talk to their vet, and perhaps learn themselves, or find someone who has been properly taught near home. Thank you for all your videos, site, thoughts and heart, Scotty!
I find the gas drops and critical care are the most important and have definitely saved my piggies before. I would add a heat pad to the list. It can keep a piggy warm and comfortable when I’ll or after surgery
I have been interested in buying a guinea pig for a little and I have been watching your videos on how to take care of them, your videos are so useful.
My number 11 item.... Saline solution. Just had a hay poke and being able to flush the eye to get the hay piece to come up easier is extremely helpful! Also use it on a cotton swab to remove eye and nose crustys when my boy got an upper respiratory.
This product is amazing! I was trimming nails and as I snipped she somehow pulled and the whole nail came off. I grabbed the powder from the bathroom and just poured it all over her foot and within seconds it stopped bleeding. It is called little ones and is designed for babies after they have been bathed. The price was cheap it came from the pound shop and it is a big bottle. The good news is her nail grew back.
great list! i was cracking up at #7, i dont have an issue doing nails but just last week we had nail day and i have one little bitty baby piggie she is the definition of a drama pig. You would have thought i was in there torturing her it was so funny
I gotmy tween 2 female guineas last Saturday(they only had 2 female guineas and they had been sharing a cage thought about getting another so they were in a 3 set I didn't know 3 sets were best but I knew they were best with friends.. finding more littleones may be hard) and bought the same food they fed in the store and have ordered in better food I knew I just needed food to hold them over and to slowly move them off the food with dried fruit in it. Since I live in nowheresville I have to wait for stuff to get here. So far got the snack shack and Vit C. I knew about the snack shacks and had looked for them in the store but they didn't have them and I couldn't remember the name so I got a rainbow wood hidey.. since the piggies are little I have it turned into an s and one side has a fleece soft spot. Before they hid all the time, now they are laying on the fleece. When they aren't romping and running around like crazy little nuts. Now I did get kiln dried pine.. and i have noticed one little piggy is nosing around in the bedding and what sounds like taking those peices of bedding and snapping them in her teeth. She also eats well and drinks and is the cubbier, braver, and friendlier of the two, but chewing bedding can't be good. For awhile I thought she was eating poops which wasn't as alarming to me because I have kept rabbits and they do that from time to time. When I heard the crakling I was like nope thats definately bedding. Do babies just do this from time to time? I need to weigh them so I know how old they are I have big man hands and I can cup them in my hand.
When I had piggies I used to give them a bath with Ferret shampoo. It did wonders as they were both long haired guinea pigs and needed a bath at least once or twice a week as they would get tangles and it was very difficult to comb them. It was my #1 go to product for bathing long haired guinea pigs and I definitely recommend it to anyone who has trouble bathing long haired guinea pigs.
This is some great information. I learned this lesson the hard way earlier this week. One of my piggies had a late night emergency vet visit due to bloat and gi stasis. My vet doesn’t keep the gas drops in the clinic so I had to go find the meds late at night. In my area many businesses are still closing early due to covid. I had to drive around a bit to find a 24 hour drug store to get the gas drops. It would have been way better if I had them on hand. Now I do. I happen to have all of the other items listed already, so hopefully I’ll be ready for next time. Thankfully my piggie seems to be on the mend after a very scary 24 hours. So yeah, don’t do what I did. Makes sure you have all of these items you guys. I promise, if you own piggies long enough, you will need all of them. Thanks Scott!
Thank you for the advice. We are putting together a guinea pig specific first aid kit and got quite a bit of these together. I am also adding gauze, wraps, gloves, and tweezers, since I find those helpful in my own kit.
First time commenting! Thank you so much Scotty for this video! Your videos have saved my guinea pigs life, quite literally! I never knew you could use CBD on a piggie. Definitely going to be adding that to the care kit -
Oh yes CBD cream has been the best invention in the pet world. My 5yo girl Pepper has arthritis in her front paws and even being on Metacam/Meloxicam her paws feel stiff/painful at times(Pepper won't move as much), giving her CBD a couple of times a day, she is able to move more
In an emergency if you dont have critical care and need something to syringe feed quickly, use the pellets the guinea pig usually has and mix into a paste using boiling water (this breaks the pellets down more easily) leave to cool and soften further with cold water if needed. You should then have a smooth textured paste and a taste your piggie is used to. Leave some in a bowl as well so the piggie can eat it if he/she wants to.
OMG !! You are freaking me out !! I love my girls. Thank you for all you do. you do help me alot . I have six girl guinea pigs. I care for my girls really well. Only 3 months I have the powder. You are my hero. I watch alot of your videos
Good job Scotty have em all. I’d add Q tips, coconut oil, eye wash, tweezers, baby wipes, baby diaper cream for sore/wet bottoms. Also veggie baby food.
Great advice, Scott. Just ordered some CBD from Saskia and a couple of things from Amazon (you motivated me.) The only things I could think of to add to your list might be a stethoscope and heating pad. 🐾
OMG this is a great video! I'm so happy I already have 9/10 of these items 😁 when I adopted my one pig he had a cut by his eye so we got that antibiotic cream. I had two pigs before my current 3 & sadly they passed away, one we believe was from old age & one became paralyzed & we had no idea how to help him so we had to put him to sleep. I don't have the powder for the nails or the critical care food but I do have a critical care that's a liquid in a syringe that I ordered from small pet select. I watched this worrying that there was something critical that I would need but now I feel so relieved knowing that I can help my babies in a pinch👍 thank you once again for educating us with a great video.
I have added electrolytes to my emergency care kit. About 10 months ago one of my young males just died, fine in the morning, but when I got back from work wasn't acting right he passed by the end of the night. Two days later his brother started showing signs he was not feeling well. Got critical care, but couldn't get vitamin c in liquid form, but i had found a vet who could see him in the next day and he seemed to be rallying. Unfortunately he passed later that night. The 3rd brother showed no signs but a few days later he stopped eating. Of course holiday weekend nobody calling me back. I'm trying to get critical care down him, hes hating it but love vit C thank you Amazon. But hes still not doing well so I decided to do a hail Mary and picked up children's electrolytes. He loves it decided to mixed a little into some critical care, now a little happier to eat some. Give him straight electrolytes 2ml. Fed alternating cc and electrolytes every 2-3 hours Nibbles recovered. Today a strong healthy boy. I really think the electrolytes helped Nibbs. Weirdly the 4th brother never got what ever it was, nor my 5 girls (girls in seperate cages). Have tried to figure out what it was never could. Nor could any vets I spoke with.
Thanks Scott, all of your vids are so helpful. I am getting piggies in four days, I have done so much research and went through your guide😁 Edit: I got two of them, one named pepper and Is an abbysian and another named teddy and is a silkie. I got boys and did NOT get them from a pet store.
Laila Guariglia , smartest thing you could have done. I was clueless when I was given my first guinea pig & I honestly think the basic care information Scott has on here made the difference between what could have been a very lonely/sick girl into a happy, robust duo. He truly is the best source of basic care info!
Awesome info! My piggies love that Vitamin C and see it as a treat. It's also really helped Carson whose immune system needs that extra boost. I've been meaning to add the CBD cream into my emergency kit. Will do that soon... 😊
@@rlynngore8784, no worries. I 'own' (more like they own me) 23 piggies and it is cheaper and provides a bonding opportunity between each piggy and I, for me to clip their nails myself. I used to take them to my old vet, as some of my gang were a 2-3 person job. With the CBD those piggies are so calm in my lap, until I get too close to the quick.
Scotty: Ok, perfect time to film a new video. Nate: Let me play you the song of my people. *clack clack clack...clack clack clack clack...clack clack clack..."
What also helps is wheatgrass powder. Last week I've been to a real piggy doctor. She helped my piggy. My piggy had surgery at a petdoctor half July and now she had again bladder stones. I didn't want to do surgery again on her. So I found this piggy doctor. She helped my piggy without surgery. I changed her diet, wheatgrasspowder and medicines and she is doin a lot better now. I could watch how she removed the stones, very impressive. Now she is getting better each day.
Love this video, these do come in handy. I have all them. I always have sherwoods appetite restore with electrolytes & B vitamins. Thats another great thing to have in case a piggy is sick, had surgery or just needs some fluid ( if the piggy is overheated). Frozen waterbottles in the freezer is another one.
I believe I use a 5 mL for critical care LOL its been a while, I forget. I keep 1 mL, 3 mL, 5 mL, 10 mL, and some dental tip ones (I forget what size these are) in their drawer. Also the neosporin+pain relief cream/ointment has a piggie safe pain killer in it, I keep that in their drawer... and may or may not have borrowed it for myself once or twice LOL
🇬🇧 Hi Scotty, another great advice session! I’d add baby shampoo and cotton buds: for a boar clean and “gentleman’s wash” to stop my boys’ stinky bottoms! . One of them actually enjoys it too!! 😜. Thank you for being my oracle 💕
I would definitely say virgin coconut oil. We have eight piggies and sometimes they get the crusting on the nose and mouth it was the only thing that would get rid of it
You always have great advice! Aww Nate is so snuggly in your arm, listening to the packets of temptation 🤭🥰♥️🐾 * CBD is pretty good for anti inflamatory properties, tried and it helps. Just saw your video on 10 things guineapigs hate 401K views!!!!!!
I use a LOT of 1ml syringes! Pepper gets 0.2ml of Metacam/Meloxicam mixed with Child Life Vitamin C once a day. I use the 1ml syringes to do my gangs' ivermectin treatments.
I have cream that I used on Squiggy when I came home one night with his nose bleeding when Lenny bit him on the nose ! But still need more of these items 😁
I was just reading about animal testing laboratory's and what they do to this poor innocent animal life! So I came to a conclusion this place is 100% 🔥🔥HELL!🔥🔥
How's Mike and Neowise doing? Twister's doing better :D I got SO many syringes... thought I bought a handful, shows out if was a whole box of 100, whoops, but now I always have them! All the things you show, I have to figure out the names in my country, makes it easier to find, haha xD "Give us lettuce! Nooooow!" great video
Thanks Scott! I'm pleased to say I have got most of these after watching your videos but I just can't get hold of terramycin here in the UK. Not sure what the alternative would be! XXX
Hi. I’m in UK. I’d probably try Chloramphenicol 0.5% eye drops/ointment as an alternative (Optrex from the chemist). We use it for human eye scratches and it’s brilliant! But I’d speak to a vet first. Much cheaper than a visit.
Can the eye ointment help with piggies wjp have the third eyelid piking out? One of my piggies has that problem. it was coming and going but now it has it all the time and the vet said it is something rhat he just will have but i wanna help him.
Hey, Scotty, I have a question. So, whenever I had a sick piggy that needed to be syringe fed (usually ones with stomach or teeth issues), I also used Oxbow critical care. However, I noticed Saskia says she doesn't like it too much and prefers another kind. Do you know why? Is there an ingredient that is different or any specific reason or just preference do you think? Just curious. :-) I know CC is okay - worked well for my pigs but that was awhile ago - you never know. Something new can always be around the corner!
Hey, I'm getting two Guinea Pigs on the 10th and my mom doesn't believe that these are necessary because we could just get it from an experienced vet but I think other wise. I think when I finally get the appointment it would be too late. I was wondering on if you could give me some advise on this. (I already told my mom that its for emergency but she still doesn't believe me)
I have a vial of Ivermectin in my emergency kit and I put a drop on their ear every three months as I don't have a rescue for health checks so I do them myself.
He's just scared and nervous. Because most humans are awful and they know this. You will need to earn your piggy's trust. I would just start petting him not by picking him up. Don't over do any treats with them make sure your guinea pig gets lots of vitamin C it's very important get some red bell peppers or an orange.
Hi. I’m also in UK. I get Neosporin from Amazon for under £10, including postage from USA. And I use unflavoured CBD oil from Holland and Barrett. 2.75% which I drop behind each ear. Then I bath them every so often while I’m using it cos it can build up and stops absorbing. Scotty advised me to do that, via email. Good luck!
I am also from the UK, so thanks for letting us know, I looked up a couple of things a while back but the postage and import tax made the item astronomically priced.
For now use dandruff shampoo to bathe her. Then use Bag balm to protect her skin. Worked for my piggies. Of course the vet allowed me kitten dose Revolution to apply just in case.
@@ScottysAnimals they said no mange, no bacteria of any kind. I have given her a bath with the head and shoulders dander shampoo made her super soft so thank you for that advice! She doesn't scratch and her skin is in great condition. Since watching your videos and learned that they need friends,I was worried to get another pig I don't want them to fight so I put a mirror in there and she lays next to it.. I think poor Lily Piggy might be lonely ... I can't seem to get the picture to send but I'll keep trying to put it through. She's a cutie 🤗
Get yourself a head lamp LED flashlight. Next get your guinea pig's favorite treat or food. Place your guinea pig on your lap while the headlamp LED flashlight is pointed at their nails. You will notice underneath the nail is a pink like substance called the quick. Do not cut the quick it's simply just cut a little above it. Always start little by little so you get good practice just take a little piece off maybe every week until they're good. Make sure you get the correct guinea pig nail cutters and the stuff that Scotty was talking about in case you do cut the quick. Good luck it's not that hard just be patient and make sure you have a friend helping you feed the animal the food so you can concentrate on cutting the nails. You cannot avoid this it's very dangerous if you let them grow too long
hey scotty! so i have a few questions that i need answered soon please! So, i just got 2 guinea pigs recently. I got bear first. he is 4-5 months old. He is very protective to his area. He has an awesome, bunny cage (the biggest one) and he loves it. A few days later, i got my second guinea pig (bruno). he is 2-3 months old. They love eachother. However, i know bear is dominant. He makes it prettttyyy known lol. But, whenever they're out of their cage, bear always rubs against bruno and it sounds like hes purring aggressively. I dont know what that means exaclty and i cant find a perfect video on that. Secondly, they always act like their chewing, but their not. idk what that means but they do it. Next, bear is always wheeking and like squeeking. Hes never in pain i dont believe, but bruno is never sqeeking. i have a video on my channel called MyGuineaPigJourney where i show what theyre doing. Please help!

I made emergency critical care with psyllium husk, pellets and Timothy hay thrown into a Vitamix. It was very close to the real thing.
One of the best life saving items I keep in my emergency kit are SQ fluids and apparatus. My vet of many years ago insisted I overcome my needle phobia (yeh, I used to pass out over needles) and learn how if I was going to move forward into rescue work.

Very good vibeo you help me a lot
Thanks Scott! I'm pleased to say I have got most of these after watching your videos but I just can't get hold of terramycin here in the UK. Not sure what the alternative would be! XXX
Not sure, ask your vet! Check out my vet list: www.scottysanimals.com
I use Tricin eye ointment here in Australia.
Sharon Robinson hi. It's not available over the counter here but you can get it through the vet.
Hi. I’m in UK. I’d probably try Chloramphenicol 0.5% eye drops/ointment as an alternative (Optrex from the chemist). We use it for human eye scratches and it’s brilliant! But I’d speak to a vet first. Much cheaper than a visit.
@@lesleystewart5981 that's helpful thanks I was looking at that last night
Thank you so much for this video!!
My guinea pigs at night 0:57
Nate is HUGE! 😍
haha Nate is the best! thank you for the video, i will try to find the local equivalent of the thing you show here.
I found a google search such as 'Australian (you would put your country) equivalent of Tolnaftate' helps me so much.
Nate looks exactly like one of my girls her name is Angel. They could be siblings!!
Hello , we’re can I buy the purple C.B.D cream ?
you been working out recently ? looking good!
😊👍
What does the big bag of critical care of oxbow cost?
I have small packages cost 6.15 euro
I have come to the conclusion that Nate just wants to be a RUclipsr as well
Could I use cbd oil
Literally first!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hiiii scotty :)
What is the name of the cbd cream in your hand I looked it up on the guiena pig one and it looks different and is expensive
Hi Scott I just got my guinea pig and he keeps running away from me so do you have any info on how to bond with my guinea pig
Some of these things are non existent in the UK 😔 it makes me sad for my piggies
How aften should you give guinea pigs vitamin C
I *believe* it’s 1mL (or 1cc) per day of the Child’s Vitamin C that Scotty recommends.
Victoria Connolly that’s right
My piggy is bald on 1/2 her body. Vet said she's pulling it out! They did a skin scrape and found nothing. Help😰
Mange, maybe hormones, treat for mange, is there scratching? Send me a pic
Except antibiotics only on vet description
Why would you use a picture like that ?
I am soo earlly it says 11 minutes ago
Ehhhhhhh so squeamish about clipping the nails!!!!!..
