      @@christopherwithers9019 Thank you, truth is I got that nickname when I was a 18 year old Paratrooper. I got in a fight in Italy and tuned up a combat engineer. The Sergeant Major put me on the Battalion boxing team, and my first fight I was getting my ass beat. I connected in the 5th round and knocked the dude out with a 1-2 combo. After that it was Boom-Boom which evolved to Boomer. Then all these millennials started this Boomer bullshit ... I was Boomer long before they were born. I dig the Boers, they are a solid pragmatic group of people. Thanks again brother.

    Please write your books. When youtube goes away your personal accounts will be harder to find. Much love and respect from an ex Bulawayo boy you helped defend.
    I admire your acknowledgement that two sides fought the war for different reasons, and your very decently worded descriptions don`t describe some of the horrors you have witnessed, but may I ask that a lot more of the gory details be added to add emphasis to the brutal truth of war.
    God speed Rhodesian hero.

    Great video and amazing story as usual, I like that you took the time to mention your tracking strategies, it's interesting to see how war "works" in such ways.
    I think it's also very interesting to compare how you Rhodesians fought and moved, to how the terrorists did.

      Yes the tracking was paramount. I used the bushmen in caprivi and they were mind boggling. They could even track off the front of the buffel at speed and even from the allouet and they were like Jack Russell terriers in a rat infested barn.. in battle they were ruthless and at night they were the friendliest people. No wonder they were shunned by the new black government

    Great story , I love hearing your stories , we know that Mugabe hated all the Rhodesian war stories and we now know from sources very close to him that the slogan “ Rhodesians never die “ gave him rages of anger and bitterness over many years which I imagine kept boiling inside of him to his last days.

    I don't know quite what it is, but listening to these stories reminds me a lot of when my grandfather and I would sit out on the back porch with a jack and coke in our hands, and I would just listen to him talk about everything he did when he was young. He worked on his dad's ranch and was arguably the best horseman in Jackson at the time. Later, he worked for marel packing company and went around a decent part of the country. Finally, he opened a meat shop in Onamia with my grandmother, where I would visit a lot when I was younger. He lives in Arizona know, and he's getting to be an old bugger, but there's a lot that I'd give up just to get him on a horse one last time. I don't know why these videos remind me of my grandpa, he's not South African or Rhodesian. He was never in the military. And I guess to most, he led a pretty uneventful life. But I'm glad these remind me of him, and I'm glad you make these videos. I guess I just want to say, thank you for doing these, and for making a young punk think back on some of the most important times in his life, even if he didn't realize they were at the time

    I didn't realize until many years after I left the US Army in 1992 that the cause to fight communism wherever it was, was a productive cause. The communists always invade first but if they conquered, their societies become basket cases(the two Koreas being the most telling). Many more communists die from poor infrastructure and negligence than war. One military historian explained that one US result of the Vietnam war was having hundreds of thousands more combat trained men that worried the Soviet Union.

    Great story as always. Would be nice to have a map of Rhodesia just to give viewers some idea of what part of the country you are in. The Zambesi valley - does this include everywhere along the valley of the Zambesi - Msuna, Mlibizi etc - or is it more the area under Matusadona across and then right across, past Karoi and to the east?

    • @calummackenzie1797
      @calummackenzie1797 2 года назад

      The Zambezi Valley really stretched from the end of the gorge( downstream from the dam wall) to the Mozambique border in the east. But during the war most of the area of concern was east from the bridge to Zambia ( Chirundu) to the Mozambique border. The Valley, as we called it (never the Zambezi valley, as everyone knew where we talking about) was hot, dry riddled with Tsetse flies (like a horse fly that gives cattle & sometimes people sleeping sickness), Mosquitoes & Mopane Flies, that were tiny little insects that flew into your eyes, nostrils & ears looking for moisture. It was a hot, humid & harsh environment & this is why the terrorists tried to traverse it in one night
