  • Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum marked a turning point in the series with the transition to new hardware, 3D models, and more ambitious storytelling via lore significant Pokémon. All of this was done in pursuit of Masuda's ambition for the "ultimate" Pokémon games. But did he accomplish that goal? Let's find out through an analysis of all the Legendary Pokémon, music, and locations in Pokémon Platinum that are used to build upon the lore of the series.

    The contrast between the attempts at progression like in sunnyshore and veilstone and the preservation of the past in celestic town and mount coronet was really well done, Gen 4 is a masterpiece

    I appreciate the attention you pay to the soundtrack, it's an aspect that is too often ignored when discussing the themes and messages a game is trying to convey. And that's especially true for a series like pokemon which isn't too text-heavy, so the music ends up pulling a lot of weight. Excellent video!

    • @KayJulers
      @KayJulers  2 года назад +3

      Thank you so much! Yeah, I’ve always been of the opinion that a memorable soundtrack can elevate a game from just great to outstanding and a lot of that comes down to how significant it is to the game’s identity itself. Plus, it gives me an excuse to gush lol

    Sinnoh was always my favorite region, so I'm really glad it's gotten so much attention over the past year and a half. BDSP, while absolutely flawed, has gorgeous visuals and a beautifully remastered soundtrack, and Legends: Arceus wound up becoming my new favorite game in the series. These games are amazing!
    Also fun fact, in one of my playthroughs of Platinum, I ended up catching Giratina and immediately checked its nature. It was Lonely. 🥺

      I haven't gotten to try BDSP yet, but I do really like how they handled the soundtrack for most songs! I'm definitely happy about that since ORAS let me down with a healthy amount of the remasters. Legends: Arceus was really the breath of fresh air I needed and I'm excited to see what they do with it.

    Words cannot express how happy I am that someone else seems to be as passionate as I am about the design of the Sinnoh region. While Unova has its characters and philosophies to give it depth, Sinnoh turns to its amazing skill at establishing an immersive and coherent world thats dripping in history. I find it a pretty genius move how the legendaries in the respective games reflect that and that allows me to enjoy both even though I'm not fond of their designs.
    Edit: Also, this is mainly spitballing on my part, but I think the theme of space might be related to the more gameplay focused aspects of Sinnoh's designs. With the addition or Rock Climb and more liberal use of waterfall, the region has an unprecedented amount of verticality that is really unmatched in most entries. I know HMs are a contentious feature in Pokemon, but their use in Sinnoh makes the world feel a bit more involved. Like it wasn't made for you to explore, but God damnit you're gonna do it anyways.

    There's actually an interesting parallel that I found between Legends: Arceus and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (no, it's not gameplay related). Spoilers for both down below.
    This parallel lies in their main antagonists, Volo and Amalthus. Both are manipulators who are obsessed with their respective creator deities. They both seek to meet God and destroy the world, and their motivation is derived from seeing the worst of humanity or suffering from the realities of life. In short, they hate their worlds.
    Their devotion to God seems absolute, yet it is twisted in such as way that neither deity would actually approve of. Even after their final defeat, they hold firm to their twisted faith, yet question what God finds lacking in them.
    _"Almighty Arceus, if you have any heart within you, then tell me... The blood of the ancient Sinnoh people flows in my veins, does it not?! What is it, then, that you find so lacking in me?!"_
    -Volo
    _"Father... Why do you not answer when I call...?"_
    -Amalthus
    They both want to be the ones to meet God, and when Rex and Rei/Akari look like they'll be the ones who will do so instead, they lose it.
    _"So Arceus wishes to meet you... Of all people, you had to be the one... Is that why you were brought to this world? Gah! I've no desire to watch from the sidelines as Arceus comes to you! And I absolutely cannot accept a world in which you would ever manage to defeat Arceus..."_
    -Volo
    _"That is not your right! It is mine!"_
    _"No soul alive... may sully the Architect's presence!"_
    -Amalthus
    Its pretty tragic all things considered. Two individuals, hurt by their worlds in such a way that they gain a twisted loyalty towards God, resulting in a dark path that they continue to walk down despite being shown that they are wrong.
    ...Though it makes you wonder if it can even be called loyalty to begin with.
    One last unrelated similarity, but neither Volo nor Amalthus are the final boss of their respective main storylines.

    Quite an interesting analysis on the Gen 4 games. Sinnoh is probably one of my favorite regions in Pokémon so it’s interesting to hear about the level of detail that went into the games. Also, Legends Arceus is such a love letter to the Gen 4 games. Not just in terms of locations, but also characters and sound design. It was awesome.

    I remember playing Legends Arceus for the first time: I didn't have that nostalgia factor since I hadn't played Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum before then, but the visuals and fresh gameplay made up for it big time. The Edo Period stylization won me over instantly, along with the snazzy character customization. Everything about Arceus captivated my attention. I don't regret the countless hours flying around in search of certain pokemon to spawn for the pokedex completion.

    Arceus' Theme is still one of my favorite in all of media to this day, not because it slaps of course but because of what it represents and how it pulled it off perfectly. This is GOD's Theme, you walk up to God ready for a Pokemon Battle and the very soundtrack itself is shouting *You've Gone Too Far Beyond. Only One Resides Here, And It Should Stay That Way.* (this rings even more true in the original gen 4 games when the Arceus Event was legitimately never meant to be accessable after they decided to not release the trigger item)

    In the context of space, I kinda like the idea that that's represented in the way history is very ingeained into the material space (fancy words for different locations) of the region, like the spear pillar being a physical remnant of the sinnoh temple, how towns with the most history circles the mountain, and the existence of celestic town in general.
    Even the foreshadowing of the red chain via the location of the three lakes (how the lakes circle the region, forming a triangular boundary) is very grounded in how the region is mapped out.
    But yeah, I just think that's interesting.

    Loved this video. You perfectly explained why Gen 4 is my favorite and why Platinum is my favorite game ever. The lined faces and red eyes being shared with Arceus and the Creation Trio is so cool to me for some reason. Was dying at the "Look at it!" "where the most interesting Lorelei-s" clips. The dissection of the games' themes being conveyed through the mechanics, OST, & even the stat distribution of the Lake guardian was great. As for how space ties into the game, think about all the new evolutions for older Pokémon with some having location based evolutions (Glaceon, Leavenworth, Magnezone, Probopass), require you to befriend your Pokémon with high levels of friendship (which would require you to travel a lot) or have trading as a requirement (which ties into you thinking about the emphasis on the GTS). There's also the Underground and emphasis on HMs. Admittedly time is easier to convey but I think space was done well. Funny that I got this channel recommended on the same day my best friend recommended the Xenoblade series to me. Will have to watch your videos on the series once I've played them but I'm subscribing either way.

    i'd say the space element is best explained as the way in which the environments change over time. space is the area in which things exist and time is the order in which things happen, they aren't so much things as they are ways of measuring things. because of that i'd say space is best depicted in these games as the many different things that happen when the time changes. in a more concrete way i think you hit the nail right on the head earlier in the video when you mentioned the metroidvania elements, but i think the concept also applies to all of the other things that change visually or interactively from day to day and as the story progresses. the ever evolving way you explore this space throughout the time spent with it really strikes me as the best marriage of these concepts within the gen 4 games; very appropriate, i think, for two concepts as inseparable as space and time.

    I was hoping you might mention it, but rather than being antimatter, it's possible that Giratina might better embody gravity. Time and space are certainly important, and matter probably wouldn't exist without them, but time and space even in our world are merely two sides of a trio of concepts; the remaining side being gravity. Gravity _distorts_ time and space, and fluctuations in time and space can cause gravity. No 2 of these concepts can exist without the third, at least according to General Relativity.
    Now combine this with the existent, but chaotic gravity in the Distortion World, the fact that Giratina switches between a heavy grounded Altered Forme and a 0-legged Origin Forme with Levitate, and the fact that the player character doesn't spontaneously get annihilated upon stepping into the Distortion World.
    Yes, I've seen Lockstin's video on the topic, but I'd actually come to the idea on my own before having watched that video because it's such a natural completion to the duo of time and space.
    -I also may or may not have a Giratina in one game named "Billie," after a certain character heavily associated with both antimatter -_-and-_- gravity.-

    • @Distortion23
      @Distortion23 2 года назад

      It was confirmed over and over again that Giratina represents anti-matter, not gravity, by the developers and the games themselves.
      Gravity is weird in the Distortion World because Space and Time is distorted there, not because Giratina controls gravity.

    • @angeldude101
      @angeldude101 2 года назад

      @@Distortion23 "Gravity is weird in the Distortion World because Space and Time is distorted there," I could just as easily say it's the other way around since that's exactly what gravity does. Space and time also do not embody matter and say nothing about the existence of antimatter. The best concept to use to complete a trio with time and space is gravity and will be for as long as General Relativity is the accepted theory.

    • @rayon8958
      @rayon8958 2 года назад

      @@angeldude101 Ok but since Palkia and Dialga represent matter, it makes more sense that Giratina represents anti-matter rather than gravity.
      Giratina representing anti-matter is also stated by Game Freak and by Cynthia in HGSS's Arceus event.

    • @angeldude101
      @angeldude101 2 года назад

      Space-time and matter are linked, look it up.
      Basically, There is no space-time without matter, and there's no matter without space-time.
      Besides, it's OFFICIAL that Giratina represents anti-matter in its world while Palkia/Dialga represent matter in the real world.

    Generation 4 was awesome! Gameplay wise it's probably the first game in the series that truly shined in my opinion thanks to the physical special split, and the lore it added to the series did alot to flesh out the world of pokemon as well as the relationship people have with them (even if some may find that past relationship a bit questionable).

      After playing Pokemon competitively for so long, I couldn't imagine a world where the physical/special split never happened. I'd honestly like to see them try to tackle a set of Legendaries with as much significance to the large-scale world if it's even possible.
