    I had TAD at North Island flying crew on a C-130 attached to VC-3 in 1974. Painted my TA-4 fighter from VF-126 there in early '74. Great video and fun memories !

      My dad was on a search and rescue helicopter at North Island around then. He retired as HMCS around 1981. I learned to fly Cessna's at the North Island Flying Club. Great place to learn how to fly. I would take off between a flight of four F-18's and a landing C-5 Galaxy. That was around 1996.

    I spent many a weekend at the North Island Beach with my late wife and kids in the late 70', 80's, and early 90's while stationed with the Coast Guard. Back then the aircraft were A-6's, A-4's, F-4's, F-14's, S-3's, H-3's, and H-2's, to name a few. Could also watch the aircraft from Harbor Island and Shelter Island. Great video and memories.

      Hey thanks for watching. Yes, I also lived in San Diego since 1973. My dad flew on CH-46's at North Island. I had a few rides on those myself in the Navy

    After getting my wings of gold in 1955, I flew the Douglas AD-5N in VC-35 (the Night Hecklers) at NAS North Island

    USN, 68-74, ETR-2, NAS Miramar, 70-74, I maintained GCA RADAR and TACAN. We used to get aircraft stationed at N.I. come up to Miramar to practice various stuff like GCA (PAR) approaches, as well as Miramar had a "fake" carrier deck painted on one runway, and even arresting gear available. LOTS of S2Fs "stoofs" back then as well as others. There was an INCREDIBLE amount of "Navy" in San Diego then, doubt I can name it all. Imperial Beach, for one.

      Ya I was there since I was four. Before that Guam, Rota, Spain and Groton. My dad was stationed at every base in San Diego, including Imperial Beach. It's still there for helicopters. Today I live in Thailand. I did four years on a ship myself 84 to 88

    I used to be stationed at Miramar in the early 80's before it was changed to a Marine base.

      I was there in VF-126, A TA-4 training squadron then over to VF-124 during the transition from F-4 Phantoms to the F-14 Tomcat. 1973-75. Worked at the LOX farm for awhile too !

    Cracking spot to chill and watch em floating about. I'm staying at the Kona Kai Resort (shelter island) next year. Any activity over that side? Oh and greetings from over the pond here in the UK!

    • @EagerExpat
      @EagerExpat  2 года назад

      Thanks for watching. Shelter Island has a view of this same runway. Just across the bay. Take a side trip up to Cabrillo lighthouse. Great view. RUclips doesn't show my San Diego videos, but if you click on playlist you'll see Point Loma. It shows Cabrillo. I also have a plane spotting channel for aircraft nerds like me. Check out "On The Runway" on RUclips. I got the return flight of BA back to town. Thanks for watching. Joe

      Great thanks will have a good look. I've got plenty homework to do before our visit. Do you guys have any tracking apps / websites over there? We have 360radar over here in UK which tracks pretty much all military birds.

    • @Flat4mik

      @EagerExpat  2 года назад

      @@Flat4mik Not sure about the military tracking. I used to fly small planes out of North Island. They used military radio channels. In the 300s I think. Flightradar is best for general aircraft. It will list military as "helo" etc.. It might show a track but wont show destination etc.

    01:55 what's the story of the Cruise Ship off in the distance?? that's been there for many years now

    • @EagerExpat
      @EagerExpat  Год назад

      During the pandemic, many cruise ships kept a small crew aboard at anchor. They would pull into San Diego and get fuel and supplies. Thanks for watching.

    I was raised on that beach in the 1960's & 70's. We didn't have many dog's on the beach back then. I remember the aircraft approach lining up straight down the beach coastline more than they're doing here. I remember jets, C-130's, and the funny looking C2 Hawkeye Radar aircraft coming in on approach flying so low we could almost count the rivets and the bolts holding them together.
    Btw, my most significant experience was being one of 82,000 boys (I was 13 yrs old) sexually assaulted while participating in the Boy Scouts of America. I mention this so we all face all of the truth in front of our faces and under our noses. I was given every reason to become an addict, a junky as it were, fully going down that rat hole of medicating myself any number of ways. However, I did not, but suffered in silence. I became an athlete in High School, and use the church community to survive. For the past 41 yrs I have more than survived. Just, fyi...

      I flew small planes out of the Navy Flying club. The approach to Runway 29 has been to stay offshore until the end, then shift to the runway. Too many rich people these days that don't like the windows to rattle. I'm sorry to hear about the scouts. I was also in the scouts in the 1970s on Pacific Beach. No problem for me. But it sounds like you did well in life.

      Just go to the Hotel Del Coronado. That's the beach at the end of the runway. You can't miss it. Ask anyone where dog beach is.
