However, after 15 years he gets greedy & starts recommending treatments that no-one needed or even wanted. A few more years go by & the dentist has fewer and fewer patients coming to him. The people are driving to another town for their dental care. That is the slippery slope Microsoft is on.

Explain to me why we need this feature? Most people have been using computers most of their life. They don't need to 'recall' anything. They can just rebuild it from scratch. Never mind that most software creates backup of everything you do, Like MS Office, so you don't really lose anything. Especially if it's in your OneDrive folder. So I ask again, why do we need recall?

@RaymondSwanson-u9y While their are quite a few conspiracy theories about Recall, it's actual purpose is not one. Recall is Microsoft's opportunity to expand ad / marketing revenue, due to Windows 11 adoption, forced by the deprecation of Windows 10. The end user feature bit, is an afterthought at best. Microsoft is attempting to pitch what would have been discovered sooner than later as additional telemetry.

For full truth two details must be underlined: 1) MS past record of "mission creep" of unwanted stuff in Windows. The best example is ability to log in with just local account. It was normal behavior. MS started putting obstructions and hiding it. Now it requires actively fighting with the system... They want Recall benefits for THEM, mission will creep, we must be watchful. 2) Your misconception about data being sent to MS. No, they never imagined to send all the data back, not feasible as you noted. They know it. But, they WANT it. Hence, plausible usage of the local AI analysis (just as the Apple infamous ""local CSAM detection") is to analyze everything locally and send to MS AI interpretation hashes, very tiny in size but packed with info MS wants to know. That is in the future, near future. You couldn't easily prove it either as this would be small encrypted data streams, trivial to hide.

It seems to me that if Recall is not doing all the things that people are worried about the what is the point of it? Why would anyone want to use any PC that is recording everything you do every 3 seconds. Its worth noting that if Microsoft are not using this to gather information because they'd never have the storage facilities for it then its not going to take long for even the largest hard disks to end up stuffed to the gunnels with screen shots. I don't trust this any further than I can throw it. Microsoft wouldn't be pushing this as such great helpful tool for the consumer unless they had an angle. As for the creator of this video , he seems to be getting a bit under hot under the collar over this issue. All I need and want is a pc that can run office. Run a browser. Run a game here and there. I’m not really a gamer. But it just seems like all these newer versions of windows are more and more full of unnecessary bloat every day. I’ve dabbled in Linux a few times to keep older hardware useful with great success. But certain editions of windows it was basically released and well guess it’s time to buy a new pc. When vista came out. I stayed on xp because of the requirements. When 8 came out I stayed on 7 because of the interface. Now 10 is being replaced by 11 and my hardware that doesn’t meet the requirements can clearly run it perfectly.. Just has more hoops thrown in the way and junk included in 11 than I want to deal with. Seriously considering switching to Linux for a simpler headache free experience for me.

If the service is not doing anything, then WHY DOES IT SHOW UP IN 24H2 on non Copilot+ PCs!?!? NO, NOT IN THE SETTINGS APP. In your own screenshots in this video and the last video, you showed that it not only exists, but also how to disable it on the command line using the dism command. Plus, you have also demonstrated it being enabled (even if it's not doing anything that we can prove) by default and without any of the GUI prompts to turn it on when it's supposed to be "opt in". Maybe Microsoft decided there's no need for any GUI prompts or settings for it when it doesn't do anything on Copilot+ PCs, but with the current flood of "answers" online about it, many just doing research to try and find out the truth would probably say that's a "BIG" assumption.
If we are to believe Microsoft's official answer on their website as you have shown us, then why does the service exist on non Copilot+ PCs if it's not supposed to be doing anything? Why is it enabled by default on non Copilot+ PCs even though there's no prompt to the user about its existence and no reference to it anywhere in the graphical settings app? These are not unreasonable questions to be asked. Regardless of all the panic flying around the Internet over it, simply asking why it exists on a non Copilot+ PC and what it's for is only logical. Going through Microsoft's website on what Recall does and it's system requirements does not properly answer these questions.
You know, Microsoft could just come out and say that the binary exists because Windows 11 on Copilot+ PCs and traditional PCs share the same code base and it doesn't actually do anything on traditional PCs. That would be a simple technical answer, but where's that statement? Why haven't they come out and said that Windows shares code among different types of computers and that there will be some "overlap" but it doesn't mean it's doing anything? None of what you have shown on Microsoft's website states this flat out.
Microsoft's bad handling of questions from the tech community isn't helping the situation. I personally think it exists on non Copilot+ PCs because of that shared code base and as a result is probably benign, but given all the bad PR around Windows 11 and the fact that it's hidden away and you need to use the command line to disable it with the dism command, Microsoft's failure to come out and address it directly has allowed all the conspiracy theories, FUD, and what ever "answer" people come up with on their own to spread like wildfire. Why Microsoft has been silent on this to allow the tech community run wild with their own "answers" is another perfectly reasonable question for people to be asking.
Lastly, when you pointed out that Recall won't be sending screenshots to Microsoft, that same page makes no mention of anything from the database formed by it reading those screenshots getting sent to Microsoft. I agree, sending screenshots would be ridiculous given the amount of storage Microsoft would need, but why haven't they made the same statement about the database? We know that the processing occurs locally on the Copilot+ PC and the screenshots never leave, but there isn't a statement stating the database (or even meta data from it) would never get sent to Microsoft. Without going into the conspiracy theories about this (seriously, others are WAY more creative than I could ever be), it's not unreasonable to ask why they haven't made a statement about it.
I get what you're trying to do here and be the level headed person in the sea of crazy people, but if you put aside the conspiracies and only look at the questions being asked that frankly don't have good answers, then your own explanations (which are very reasonable) don't resolve anything either. The only one who can actually resolve this is Microsoft, but until they do, the mess will continue. It's not a conspiracy theory to say that this mess was created by Microsoft. The tech community wants proper answers, but in the absence of such answers, the void will be filled by something else, as "colorful" as it may be.

I've worked in IT since the 80s. I had Windows 7 on my home computer until six months ago, when I bought a new PC to run video editing software I needed. I dislike Windows 11. The interface is ridiculous - imagine "hiding" copy and paste functions??!
Microsoft changes things just for the sake of it, without any good reason. Why rearrange everything when you've just learned the interface well? It takes 8-10 years to make an operating system stable and good. Before everyone has switched to Windows 11, they'll probably release Windows 12.

It is all well and good saying that MS have announced what they are doing through blog posts, but the problem Brian is that even if MS aren’t doing anything nefarious, they should make their users more aware of new features such as Recall.
I was speaking to my brother about the problems 24H2 is giving people. He isn’t a big computer nerd, and when i brought up about Recall, his first response was what’s that? And there is your problem, the average unsavvy user doesn't know about these changes.
And some are probably wondering why there’s this 8GB of space now being taken up or why their computer is laggy because Recall is enabled by default.
I wasn’t able to test 24H2 on my main machine to see for myself what it’s like on that as it gives me a boot error. So i wasn’t able to see all they’ve done. But they do need to do better in making their users aware of a new feature, what it does and if they would like it enabled.

While this is undoubtedly correct ,Microsoft rarely does things that don't benefit Microsoft in some way. Incorporating Internet Explorer into the core of the operating system 20+ years ago required anti-trust action to overcome. As Brian says, choose your operating system based on the features you want or require and weigh up their respective benefits and detriments. As a relatively savvy retiree who does not require any gaming beyond sudoku and solitaire Linux does everything I require daily for personal use. For my voluntary work I still require access to an old copy of MYOB running on a local Windows machine but I will probably recommend that we move to cloud based accounting software, expensive as that is, then move to Linux for that purpose too.

Hi Brian, thanks for the video. Yes, many users have misunderstood how the Recall feature works. It is not mandatory on Windows 11 24H2, as you also mention in your video. Microsoft has changed a lot in the Recall feature; it will be an opt-in feature, which I think is very good. It requires a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) and a Copilot+ PC right now. Then the Recall feature will come to Intel and AMD later from what I have heard, but it will also require new hardware, an NPU, and so on. But personally, I will not use the Recall feature if I buy a Copilot+ PC or another computer that supports the Recall feature in the future. Such a great video, Brian, where you also clarify how the feature works. I live in Sweden, so it seems right now I will have the option to uninstall the Recall Feature if I buy a computer that meets the requirements for the Recall Feature, but I think that everyone in the world should also be able to uninstall the Recall Feature if they want to. Take care Brian and have a lovely day in the UK

Saying that Recall doesn’t send screenshots to MS because that would lead to an unmanageable amount of data doesn’t take into account that the AI will interpret images and all, and could send these very accurate interpretations as relatively small (text) files, thereby eliminating the need for extremely big storage facilities.
I am not saying this will happen (right away), but it does invalidate the needed storage argument

  • @D.von.N

I didn't expect MS to copy the images themselves. But does it still store the interpretation by the bot of what it sees in a plain text? That can be easily checked via a backdoor and hackers could also get their hands on it. I have registered that MS is going to secure these materials better now than it initially planned (and received a deserved criticim), but knowing MS even that will have some holes. And pobably the user will be blamed.

Once the desired info is spotted in a screenshot, e.g. a list of logins and passwords that the user has opened in a password-protected file, that list of logins and passwords is converted into pure text and represents only a few kilobytes to be potentially transmitted.

That's why Windows 12 will require faster, more-powerful hardware too. That's why "helper" bloatware such as Cortana gets you used to newer computers being no faster than old ones. And that's why they keep moving around and hiding configuration settings. When they DO install and activate real-time monitoring through an overnight update, you'll never notice it. I believe the tensor cores on dedicated GPUs are far more powerful than an NPU, but the NPU is far more power efficient. Or something like that. I'm not completely sure, it was a while ago I checked it, so I might misremember.

      I use W10.
This morning, Windows update KB5045594 installed itself and COPILOT has now ensconced itself on my taskbar!! I don't want it, so I'm now going to spend ages trying to figure out how to get rid of it.
Is it okay to uninstall CoPilot completely, or will that have an adverse effect on any other functions? Any comment would be very much appreciated, thank you.

      @Uchiha409, let's do a thought experiment:
you come home one day and you see that your neighbour's house is on fire. you see it's just a small fire and nothing has really burned yet, but you know how fire is. what do you do:
      1. nothing. its not your house, after all, so who cares? or;
      2. knock on your neighbour's door and inform them that if they dont take care of the fire, their house could burn down...and potentially take the neighbourhood with it.
the fire might not affect you at first, but it has the potential to really mess things up for many / everyone.
      what would you do?

Also recall will now store the data in a VBS Enclave, which is an encrypted virtual machine. "Supposedly" not even Microsoft could access the data if they wanted to. Of course if you are using your computer for illegal activity, I would probably still not trust doing that activity on a recall enabled computer. For the majority of everyone else, it will probably be safe. But I for one will not have the thing enabled. I don't care to see what I did on my computer 3 weeks ago. If I need to capture something, I use Greenshot as my capture program.

It would be nice if a software engineer or computer programmer can examine the Windows recall feature and clear it up for us if it really sends snapshots to Microsoft.

If it's only for copilot+ pcs, why is it installed on my non copilot+ pc? And why did I have to disable in order for it to be labeled as disabled? Also why was it made a dependency of windows explorer and I can't uninstall it.
They had to do this for a reason, and I can't think of any that are good.

What stops Microsoft from streamlining ReCall in the future and silently automatically enabling it as a hidden background integrated component without the users knowledge. Screw that I'm moving over to Mint. I have been a windows client and server admin for 25 years and this is the final straw. Goodbye MS.

The issue of MS accessing sensitive user data has nothing to do with Recall or anything forthcoming. And has been around since long before Win 11.
If someone is using Windows then they agreed to the “END-USER LICENSE AGREEMENT FOR MICROSOFT SOFTWARE
    IMPORTANT-READ CAREFULLY:”
12pages of legal jargon but the right for Microsoft to access the data stored in Windows is clearly provided for in paragraph 8” Consent to Use of Data” of the user agreement. A pdf of this agreement can be downloaded from Microsoft.
