The even better news is that Roland now makes the Roland Boutique JP-08 which is pretty close in sound to the Jupiter 08 and much much cheaper. And it has MIDI.
When I first got a used copy of thriller in early 1995 on cassette tape , this song completely blew my mind ( and nearly my hi fi speakers ! ) Even now I still think the intro is the most exciting build up to a song I've ever heard ,and at 1:25 in this video I'm reminded why , great job !
Great set of videos! Please make a deconstruction of Prince's 1999. Nobody seems to know the right chords, voicings or sounds (and equipment) used. Keep up the good work!
Just found your channel and I'm loving the content! Your focus on old analog instruments gets me right in all the feels. I've gotten the analog bug recently and as much fun as collecting is, it's damn pricey. I doubt I'll ever actually own a Jupiter-8, so it's nice watching one from afar doing what it does best. Cheers!
I've got an old JX-8P and I thought that had some round, fat sound to it. Nothing compared to this beast! My holy grail as far as Roland keyboards go is to someday get a JX-10. My math teacher had one and that thing just had the most awesome sound to it. Huge, lush, great weighted keys, tons of settings to really fine tune the patches...just a super machine overall.
@@cmathews2112 We do it the old fashioned way. We write the settings down on paper, photocopy them, and mail them. :D I've actually wanted to start a Casio CZ enthusiast site/sub reddit for some time now where users could trade patches with maybe an Excel sheet or Google doc template. The CZ series was damn amazing when it came to patches. Eight step instead of four step individual envelope settings for the pitch, filter and volume, built in Ring Modulation, pretty cool PCM waveforms with a noise waveform for percussive or breathy effects, Phase Distortion (Casio's in house synth tech) couldn't replicate the old fat analog sound, but it was much more expressive and in your face than the typical FM sound tech from Yamaha. I can still slay with my CZ-101. :)
but you didn't show us the PATCHES bro. i have a Jupiter 8 and was hoping you would show HOW you got to the patch not just flipping through the patches.
Thanks man the cover is so good it brought tears to my eyes ! Nice Jupiter! I'm working on a cover of Billie Jean its all synth too but compared to this track its minimal awesome job!
I recently got me a Jupiter 8 after i sold my first one in 2007.. back then it was very hard to sell it, because everyone was losing its mind about software... now that HW is in vogue again, i paid a fuckload for it
yay dr mix again these tutorials are dank. i love the jupiter 8 from what i've seen it looks and sounds so cool but by the time i have enough money to even think about investing in such equipment it will probably be almost impossible to obtain - and they're like £13,000 GBP to buy second-hand now
Hey doctor Mix. I was just wondering if you by any chance have the sheet music for the brass wind line. I can't seem to get it by ear, so I was wondering if you add the sheet music for it. Love from Jamaica🔥🎇
Man, I love the way you present and describe things - wish I had such brilliance and talent as yours. And please don't reply saying I can... cos I can't, I was alive n kicking when all these great synths first came out and just to show how old I am now (and how many VSTis I have) I've already had 5 strokes to try and kill me but I'm hanging in there :-)
Hey doctor mix this is the best cover of thriller that has ever filled my ears, my dream is to make a film of thriller and I would use this version as the main theme (I'm not actually making a film of thriller, it's one of my aspirations) and credits and I found a video of your amazing cover but with the vocals and it's amazing and now I coming down with a severe case of synth fever 😂 😂 you only have 278k subs but you deserve a million though keep up the good work doc 👍 👍 👍
Hello I don't know what halion and kompakt are, I don't have time for that, I am working with ableton live can I purchase the Thriller pack and use it wit ableton or is it too complicated ? Thx
Great video. but my only complaint is I want you to explain in more detail how to create the sounds. Im a beginner to creating sounds on analog synths. explain the vco range and everything specifically so i can get as close as possible.
It's not so hard as y think ! You can find on net some basic theory and the rest will be y'r experiments (set/play/listen) Y'r ear should be a leader to y'r fingers !
Hello Doctor Mix, sorry for my english, but i' ll try to explain what i need if possible, obviously paying for this: - do you have the all sounds of Thriller in "sysex" for Roland D-50 (i don' t have JP-8 even if i know perhaps the sounds will not be as in the JP-8) ? As an electrical engineer and just a person who really enjoys music, I really love seeing how all of this is produced.
I'm in 4th year, studying to be become an electrical engineer. I've been making and producing music on the side. Saying 'hi' from here.
I don't get why this channel doesn't have more subscribers. I'd love to see more songs deconstructed like this.
Lol because he's not buying subs he's getting them honestly
Because he does not leave the final song playing.
@Squad 47 I might have to agree with you lol
Hé should do a reveal at xxxxx subscribers lmao
Because its for very specific audience that is not THAT large like cat videos
Yes, when Doctor Mix says the Jupiter 8 is: "Very expensive, very big and very rare". He really means it. I've just had a look at some examples.
The even better news is that Roland now makes the Roland Boutique JP-08 which is pretty close in sound to the Jupiter 08 and much much cheaper. And it has MIDI.

How can you dislike a video with a Jupiter-8, a Moog and a Rhodes in it?!?! Among others!
mostly by 90 dimwits who had no idea of whats going on.....

Proudly Owner Of Roland Jupiter 8 ....! 👍🏻🏁
How can I resist those colorful buttons on the J8?
Lorenzo Sala They look just nice.
When looking for Jupiter 8 online I was given 17 thousand reasons why I would resist.
Lorenzo Sala because it’s half the price of a new car
Lorenzo Sala $12,000

Truly awesome. I've never seen a such a sophisticated pop song with so many parts duplicated and explained so exactly. You're a great teacher!
Great set of videos! Please make a deconstruction of Prince's 1999. Nobody seems to know the right chords, voicings or sounds (and equipment) used. Keep up the good work!
Because Prince was studio genius.
3:38 that resonance is delicious!
Falling in love with these machines....
Super AWESOME!! The best show and tell EVER!!
It doesn’t get any cooler than this!!!
The synth open has real played trumpets also sounding through all the track, nice video man
So does he in the video from the previous week.
The track has a Flute, Trumpet, Flugelhorn, and Trombone in it.
Talented guy. Thanks for this great and professional video! (Love your Intro too)

This is by far my favourite channel at the moment. Well done on this, I've been amazed for days!
Man the jupiter is so nice
Just seen they are 13 G's on Ebay , love the colours.
Great insights into the innards of a superhit. Still can't understand how people can dislike such a wonderful video.Gave it a like.
Every time you upload You really make my day
Keep up good work 👍👍👍
Love your channel brother.
Keep the 'analog' fires burning HOT! 🔥
You're awesome, Doc.
Sweet! I'm lucky enough to have a Jupiter 8. I need to get these patches from you. :) Thanks for the upload. Sam
How would he do that? Record the cassette output to a .wav file? Or maybe a sysex dump if he has an Encore midi interface?
Damn you!

Didn't West End Girls use to be the loading screen song?

I just stumbled upon your Channel! Really cool stuff!
Can you play do one for the intro of Human Nature? That sound always mystifies me, its so outworld and incredible!

Can anyone tell me which synth is shown briefly @0:23 ? It has the red endless encoders as well as knobs and sliders. Thanks.

Dr. Mix, you have an excellent ear!
Just seeing the colorful buttons on the Jupiter 8 makes me want one so bad
a little more release on the brass sound to modulate the resonance.

0:33 , does anyone begins from the end?
Is there any textual description of how to set these sounds so I can try it out in a software synthesizer version of the jupiter 8 ?!?
Have you done the subtle double stabby sound that sits under the bass, and the howling sound, would be cool.
so cooooool thx
How did they sequence the song when they recorded it back then?
Wish i could find the jp-8V presets. Any chance you could transcribe them for us?
I don't use Kontakt or Halion. Why not make at least the MIDI file a free download?
wow that sound at @5:00

OMG How much you have paid for Jupiter 8 ?
You're the best !
I presume the pad sound is the same as the brass stab but with lower cutoff frequency? You didn't explain that in the vid
Nice, though the #11 sound sounds a bit thin, too bright or lacking low end.
Dr Mix and Anthony Marinelli are the best humas on the planet.
If you don't agree... come at me!!
Now I'm Impressed!! Great Job!!! Nailed it!! BTW, What version is your JP-8? I don't see DCB in the back.
Great Stuff! Would be also great to hear it in comparson with the most common plugin emulations. Could you also do such a video?
You should recreate Somebody's Watching Me by Rockwell

Considering how accurate the expensive-big-and-rare description is, what is the arguable alternative, a Jupiter 80 modeler or the Boutique module?
