- At the bottom corner of the engineering school's Seeley W. Mudd Building, punctuating polished slabs of pinkish-red granite, chunks of pale blue quartz reflect changes deep in the Earth dating back 600 million years. Part 3 of the Columbia Geology Tour, following along with Professor David Walker as he talks about the stones that make up Columbia University buildings, and what they can tell us about Earth's past.
I have some llantite (sp?) that originated in Texas and it has some blue quartz in it. It is a lovely piece, and the blueness shows up nicely.
Llanite is a unique rock. The blue color of the Quartz in Llanite is believed to be due to Ilmenite, not Rutile. Ilmenite's formula is FeTiO^3, so it is not an Oxide.
just found this channel , love this info thank you
Just received some pale blue quartz from Brazil it has lines of darker blue
2:50 The blue color of the Quartz in Llanite is believed to be due to Ilmenite, not Rutile. Ilmenite's formula is FeTiO^3, so it is not an Oxide. Titanium Oxide can actually form 3 different Species: Anatase, Brookite, and Rutile. Why he failed to mentioned that, I don't know.
Thank you that was really interesting.
Just found some of this while rockhounding along a river bed here in Northern California ~
Thank you!
I have two pieces of quartz that are of large size, (normal kind of rock) (no crystal) the inside of these two pieces are a very noticeable blue color. I have never seen this before and was wondering if anyone could help provide any information on this. Thank you!
Where did you find them?
