The Ancient Salt Pans of Peru

- Originally built by the Incas, the manmade salt pans in Maras, Peru, have endured for over 500 years. Beneath the Qaqawiñay mountains runs a salty fresh spring, which empties into 3,000 mountainside pools. The sun heats them, evaporating the water and leaving the natural salt crystals behind. Each pool is still hand-mined, much the same as when the Incas were there. On this breathtaking hillside, it's easy to marvel at Mother Nature and the ingenuity of humankind.

I have been there, it's an amazing place

Been there too.
has anyone noticed that ancient civilizations seemed more smart then us.... the great wall ...... pyramids the floating city of the Aztecs ... I mean why were there more great architecture then today?
More possibilities and freedom. No strict laws and monarchs could spend years taxes and tens of thousands of workers to build.
"We are amazed because building massive structures without sophisticated machines and tools seems amazing to us today. We haven't "lost" anything though. People kept right on building amazing structures right the way through history. The pyramids, the Acropolis, the Aqueducts, hundreds of amazing Cathedrals, etc....When you see a 2 year old doing calc-I work, you're impressed, even if you're far ahead. Because you're not a 2 year old. You're impressed that, given the conditions, they are able to complete such a task.
We stand on the shoulders of giants. What we can do is all based on the work of our predecessors. We are no smarter than the ancient peoples-biologically, it must be so. Remember, knowledge is not intelligence. There is no evidence that modern people are any smarter than ancient people, and there's no reason either."
In a thousand years, someone will be saying that about us.
Back then that would be considered modern tech and, in a way, we marvel at their ingenuity - the fact that they knew what salt was and how they figured out how to farm it.
In a thousand years, I can imagine anthropologists in awe over how we knew how to conduct electricity and operate machinery as they would have tech that far surpasses us in every area.
I'm sorry but the great Wall is nothing compared to the Hoover Dam people in the past sure did some amazing things but engineering today is far more advanced
leanore Davies that's an interesting point.
I found a league of legends players hideout
This video was shot recently (January?) during the rainy season - it's surprising how much the salt pans change from the dry season (July). In the winter they're pure white from all the stray crystallized salt, now they're quite brown from the muddy runoff in and around the ponds.
The same ponds in July: ruclips.net/video/N6MOfLK82r4/видео.html
A beautiful place and a real delicious gourmet mineral salt! It depends even how beautiful it looks when you go there. Later in the year, outside of the rain season the Salineras in Peru get's even more beautiful! It's in a side valley of the Sacred Valley of the Inca's close to Machu Picchu, awesome place and very nice well kept heritage!
It’s little places like this that make earth look like something out of an alien planet
Nothing less than a wonder
itsnot only 500 years ago it is more than 2000 years ago that this beautiful place exits!
I thought the same thing. 500 years ago? Sheesh, not even close.

You should see the salt pools in Pamukkale, Turkey. They look way beautiful than this !!
Murat Kaya. Do you sell or trade this lovely salt...
Murat Kaya You could've just said check if out. This is not a culture race to see who's best.
Who said anything about cultures. I meant there are better looking salt pools out there. Read carefully Tran101
Murat Kaya I guess I meant it's not a race. Every place in nature has its beauty. However yes, you are correct. That was reckless on my part.
I've been to Pamukkale. It's beautiful there, but it's not salt. It's limestone and calcium carbonate. I'd love to visit these salt pools in Peru, that area looks amazing.
