Aloha Jason, this handheld looks much like my Baofeng A58s Tri Bander.
I bought two that measured at 9.63 watts, so I bought two more of these radios from the same eBay seller but they sent me the 5 watt versions, the BF-A58s on the second order that I don’t notice until after I gave one to Chuck KK6USY for testing when he came out for a visit to Honolulu and activated Kahana State Park here in 2022 for POTA.
Apparently, they only made these A58s handhelds for a short time and were only $36 at the time on eBay.
Now if this new Feng actually transmits close to 10 watts, I would still buy it but based on today’s video and testing, I would not.
Jason, you are providing a valuable service for the Amateur radio community and I thank you for that! 🤙🏻

I've had this radio for a few months i don't talk on it but i listen to air band, it receives air band very clear for the price, and it will identify any signal around you and give you the tone, just put it into Search mode and wait, and i programmed channels fpp easily, Great Video tnx Man!

FWIW, some reviewers have reported that Baofeng has cleaned up the signal in the newest 5RM radios. I bought a couple for myself and I liked them so much that I bought some more for a non-profit i work with. It's a little disappointing that it doesn't generate the rated 10 watts, but in reality there are so many factors affecting signal strength that in a practical sense, 8 vs 10 won't matter to most people. It hasn't mattered to me.

My new Radtel, RT-470x supposidly has spurious emmissions. Although I have never seen anything spewing out of the antenna hole! But it has a great reciever, and clear audio out. Plus the other options I am liking. So, its a keeper for me.

These HT's are too funny. I purchased the Dual Band AR-5RM (last month) which looks identical to your 5RM. Mine tested well below the FCC limits on both 2 meter and 70 cm. But get this, I decided to see if mine would operate on the 220Mhz band. And it does! It receives AND transmits on 220Mhz! It was advertised as a 2m/70cm radio so I feel like I lucked out and got an extra added feature for free! Mine has firmware version V0.11 and hardware is version V01. Now I need a multi-band antenna for 220Mhz. LOL
    Keep up the good work!

It is interesting to note that though Baofeng calls this radio 10W in promotional literature, there is no stated output power in the user's manual and I didn't see any specifications to calculate output power either. In this and 2 other reviews, power output was measured at 8-8.5W max. This shows good consistency and I can only determine that quality control is good and power output is also OK. I suspect Baofeng does like many manufacturers and plays the white lie game here. Audio speakers are often rated at peak vs RMS output. This device may be rated at input to produce maximum output for example. So Baofeng advertises this at 10W but is careful not to show that in the manual so are they rating it at 10W? I am not going to butcher my new radio to patch the battery to the housing with wire and hook up a multimeter to measure input. Its nice to have these reviews to show what output I can expect.

    • @appala
      @appala 6 месяцев назад +2

@@HamRadio2 I think we missed a point on clarifying. Rick(i am guessing thats you name from your id above), the testing that was conducted here lets us know how good the radio is in terms of emitting signal at the right frequencies. Think of this way. Consider a flash light that is designed to be very narrow beam to ensure it lights up stronger at long distances. Now, to test it, the light needs to be reflected properly at the correct angles. If it doesnt, it leaks light at a wider angle and is not as efficient as it needs to be. Same with Radios. If they are leaking signals at frequencies they are not supposed to, then the signal thats emitted at the right frequency might not be as strong. In addition, the signal at improper frequencies might cause interference to ppl on those frequencies. In some cases, those frequencies might be part of a different category of users. When someone says signal is not clean, think of how it works when light leaks from flashlight where it shouldnt. Hope it helps. Being a newbie, this was my understand. Anyone can correct me if I am wrong. Always willing to learn.

So lots of wrong info in all of your comments.
It isn't a waste of time to talk about these radios because lots of people use them and don't care about spurious emissions. The video isn't made only for you.
Also, yes... people do care about spurious emissions. And you should too. It's possible you'll damage something with a dirty radio that keys up next to another electronic appliance. And these dirty radios are much easier to track since they're transmitting on multiple frequencies. So yes, people do care, even if you don't. The video wasn't made only for you.
It's worth noting that these videos get lots watch time and comments, whether I show the TinySA test or not. Take that for what it's worth

I REALLY wish Baofeng would build a scanner. I bought the DMR radio they made and it worked well
I don't know how much more it takes to get Phase 2 digital simulcast. I think DMR dual slot is similar
I would love to see Baofeng make a scanner and demolish Uniden the way they demolished Icom , Yaseu, Kenwood and the other companies that were making Radios for 10 dollars and charging customers 800 dollars.
Uniden does this and It is my dream to see a Baofeng SC-2R scanner for 100 dollars that does NXDN, OPEN SKY, PHASE 2 DIGITAL SIMULCAST, DMR AND Standard analog with coverage from 25 MHz to 1.3 Ghz, all mode, AM, NFM, FM, WFM
It was such a an eye opener seeing the 5R the first time for 35 dollars and out of the box it was VHF / 222 / UHF
I thought that the big guys would cut their prices, but they didn't.
I saw a video of a sneaker factory in an Asian country, and they we're making sneakers for four major retailers and they were making them for a big online seller and they were also making them for the just do it company and the price for the big box stores was $20 and the difference in the material was that the just do it was a little bit thicker and the graphics were different and the color was different but I fell off my chair when I saw that the cost of the sneakers was 2,800 dollars
Corporate greed they literally will charge anything they can and seeing the videos made by employees from factories where they make the same exact products for huge American companies and they make a generic version for the people in Asia and just like the Baofeng where you can buy one for $20 in the store in Asia, they sell for 800 in America.
I saw on auction last year a scanner that was in Japan in 1983, and it was 1000 channels and it was all mode and .5 MHz to 1 Ghz
It was way ahead of its time.
It is awesome to live in these countries and be able to buy American goods for a fraction of what America pays
I remember when I first saw the 700 /800 MHz Yagi antenna and it was 20 dollars from China.
I bought 2 and they were awesome and I went back to the company to buy more and they said that their entire inventory had been purchased by an antenna company and sure enough I saw the $20 antenna being sold for $120 on Wilson.

I like my quansheng UV-k6(8) version. With the IJV firmware it gives me 2m, 1.25m, and 70cm. The firmware allows for transmission on 33CM and 6m but its way out of spec on transmit. All the chinese radios are software driven for the frequency synthesis but the transmit circuits are designed one specific range.

The extra 3db is not worth the extra power consumption in emergency communications. Matter of fact, 3db is just barely noticeable on the receiver end. If any has learned anything from experience in amateur radio. 3db is just noticeable, 6db is a 4 times change or a 1 s unit. 100 watt transceiver to the full legal limit of 1500 watts is just under 2 s units of change. The best way to get any signal on VHF or UHF is good coax and antenna gain.@@phillipsmiley5930

I just got the AR-5RM version and I am getting 5-6w in the 2m band, 6-7w in the 1.25m band, and a whopping 15-16w in the 70cm band as well as 13-14w in the GMRS band. I kind of appreciate that extra power but I don't know if I want that much power next to the old noggin or on the belt making mountain oysters out of my nuts. Oh and also, the power settings in the 1.25m band for high and medium are reversed when measured. But I think it is a good little radio for maybe a backup of the mobile radio I have set up as a base with the power it has in the 1.25m and 70cm bands. I have a hunch I got the 5RM Pro Max version that is supposed to be 15w and they stuck the wrong sticker on the back of the radio. I just wish it was at least 10w in the VHF bands.
Receive seems good except for one of my local repeaters that whenever someone who is loud into the machine it causes the signal to drop out at the peaks of the audio. I think it's a problem with the repeater because I see the signal fluctuating on my other radios too just not as drastically as the 5RM. And by local repeater I am talking about 12-18 miles away since I live in the country.
The radio has no problem getting into the repeaters around my area even one 440 repeater over 40 miles away. And that's in the house on the AR-771 antenna that came with the radio. I also work repeaters to the north of me over 30 miles away most of the time with the 771 antenna. The short antenna is junk and luckily the one I ordered had the upgraded Abbree AR-771, hence the AR-5RM model designation.
I don't really want to know how bad the spurs are because I know it will rain on my parade, LOL.
The battery seems to be really good and lasts a long time. It will stop transmitting right at 6v but it was transmitting high power all the way until it stopped keying so I ran the FM radio and the flashlight to totally run it down and did that for 3 cycles from a full charge to dead so it conditioned the battery for the best performance.
Yes the red letters suck as well as the small font of the channel names. They should be as big as the frequency numbers and there is no reason why they are not. Still, it's well worth the $26 I paid for it and would love to see the UV-21R get the same bands and power increase. I got the UV-21R along with the AR-5RM and have been testing it for a few days and I really like it. It's tri-band and with consistency in all 3 bands and GMRS of around 5w. It doesn't have air band receive but that is not important to me. But that's a different radio, but I wish it had the power the 5RM has. 73s

Without a repeater in range they are just an expensive walkie talkie, in a different frequency. You need a license to legally use the top channels or the ham bands if your GMRS is ham capable.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  6 месяцев назад

      A couple of things...
These HTs aren't expensive. $30 for an HT is quite cheap.
Walkie Talkie doesn't have a frequency, so that part makes no sense. A walkie talkie is just a handheld radio
Real GMRS Radios aren't Ham capable. The ones that are, are cheap Chinese HTs that are dirty and poor quality. With a poor quality HT, you aren't going to get nearly as far without a repeater, but it is still possible to communicate.

The new Baofeng radio is a brick. The color screen is beautiful, but it gets old fast. It also draws too much power. I don't like the blocky design. I'm not going to watch movies on them. I also don't care about harmonics as no one seems to be using the other frequencies.
Again, the color screen is beautiful, but fairly useless. Dump it in the nearest lake and use a UV-5R instead.
