Les Miserables is one of those book where you're better off watching the movie then reading the book. The writing style is definitely a product of the time and is hard to get through since it was written in 1862. The basic story is about a reformed criminal and the opening scene in the church is where he steals a bunch of items, get caught stealing, but the priest takes mercy and tells the man to take the items and go make a life for himself. So the story is basically about how he tries to reform himself and make a life for himself and a girl he ends up adopting later down the line. There's a lot of political stuff going on in the background and a lot of it is a commentary about the poor and hardships during that time. If you're interested, I recommend checking out the 2012 movie as they did a good job portraying the story and making it engaging to watch. It's just one of those that's easier to digest as a movie since you don't have to read through the long descriptions.

The Hobbit was actually written before Lord of the Rings, which he wrote as a sequel to The Hobbit upon request by his publishers.
