  • oztooltalk check out the long awaited 18V grinders from Festool!
    While this review set out to focus on the 18V diamond cutter and (to a lesser degree) the new 18V angle grinder, we couldn't help but also talk in detail about the fantastic 15L 1200W CT MIDI dust extractor system that forms part of the system.
    The diamond masonry cutter (DSC-AGC 18V, $649) has the following specifications:
    - Disc Diameter 125 mm
    - Cutting Depth 27 mm
    - Tool Weight 3.2 kg
    - No Load Speed 4500 - 8500 rpm
    The angle grinder (AGC 18V, $499) is the unit upon which the diamond cutter is modified, and varies only in weight (2.7kg) and cut depth (~33mm).

    Nice video, but please please pretty please pull the battery out before putting your hands on / so close to the disc (2:38 and onwards)!
    Chance might be slim, but the video would've been kind of messy if you accidentally turned that thing on...

    When getting FC products I like to use a sacrificial piece of timber under the cut to further improve dust extraction, if there’s nothing underneath dust escapes as seen when you were cutting blue board

    • @OZToolTalk

      I think the main reason dust escaped on the blue board cut was because they vac turned off without Mike realising (not sure why, I wasn't there). Good tip though! thanks

    Hi Chaps - thanks for the great work in these reviews. Question: I see Festool sell the shroud as a separate item - will that for the "standard" grinder?

    I’ve just purchased the angle grinder and the conversion system to the concrete cutter, plus their smaller H class vac and the Bluetooth switch (saving money on batteries). I’m a tiler and am just preparing for the inevitability of needing an extractor coz of silica dust. I’ve been thinking of purchasing festool’s track concrete cutter which apparently has better dust extraction. But I need to get back out of dept after these said purchases. Compared to using the old 100mm grinder (makita, still a very usable grinder) these tools don’t have nearly as much vibration. That’s why the grip is larger coz the motor doesn’t touch the outer parts of the machine. Another thing with these is they have a fully enclosed motor, which means that these tools will last, tiling is a highly dusty trade and it wrecks your grinder’s motor.
    One thing I will say is I’m not overly happy with the longevity of the batteries, this is my first cordless grinder, and I haven’t had a fully charged battery last all day. Is this to be expected with a cordless grinder?
    As for the vac, I love everything about it, we had to rip up a big room of old tiles and this vac was epic.
    As for Festools prices, I think if a tool is better and you use it for work, it’ll pay for itself very quickly. Whether you get ripped off or not.
    As far as warranties go, I haven’t found better than Festool.
    If you’ve read this far, we’ll done👍🏼

      I read it all ;) Thanks for the feedback, that's really insightful. I would not expect a grinder to last all day on one battery, no.

      For the original commenter here, fellow tiler and I’m considering buying a Fein 18V CCG grinder which the festool is based on. How has your festool held up since your purchase?

    • @kierenovery8420
      @kierenovery8420 3 года назад +1

      Extremely well to be honest, just make sure you use one before you buy it coz I have to hold it in my left hand, which is a nice change from the norm and having to learn to use both hands for tools. My favourite part with this grinder is the back cutting, I can flip the grinder upside down and see everything that it’s cutting, it might feel a little weird at first but I love being able to back cut without the grinder jumping. Yep, the grinder hasn’t jumped the entire time I’ve had it.

      @@kierenovery8420 thanks bud. Yeah I have a few corded grinders and I have M18 tools but no cordless grinders yet. I want one that’ll last me at least two years to warrant the higher cost. The fein/festool have the same motor and dust protection which appears to be the best on the market and both have variable which is nice. Fein has a bigger range on the variable and has a more narrow body which has my attention specifically

    I was cutting the same 90 degree return and H sections posts on the weekend. 9" grinder all the way. Good review as always, Festool will have their fanboys but for range of skins I suspect they wont compete with the other brands.

      Yeah after I tested the Festool out on those couple of posts, I ripped out the 9" grinder for the rest ;)

    Can you tell me why these brushless grinders are so slow? I have the makita, very happy with it but, I pulled out my big bosch mains beast, 125mm, 1500w 12000 rpm. It rips though stuff because of the revs, I got out the old battery makita, 10000 rpm, it cuts much faster than the brushless with 1mm cutting discs.

    • @OZToolTalk
      @OZToolTalk  3 года назад

      if you're brushed Makita grinder (very out-dated) is out-cutting your brushless Makita grinder, then something is very wrong with you're BL Makita.

    • @michaelbamber4887
      @michaelbamber4887 3 года назад

      @@OZToolTalk it doesn't but why are they only doing 8500 rpm? It fucks the discs because they are running to slow. I find that flap discs an wire brush work is fine, as is grinding but thin cutting discs are slower than they should be because of the low rpm, the 4.5" air grinder with 12000 rips thro.

    Never have and never will be acquiring tools from Festool but a watch, thumbs up and comment to support the channel with the YT algorithms.
    A lot of cement board is cut in the UK for bathrooms and for external of tower block homes and I see so much of it cut with circ saws just tearing the granny out of the tool with no dust extraction - this is the use case but companies never invest in Festool in the UK unless small scale due to worries of theft. Most Hiltis rent/lease style on site with the whole fleet management. I think most Hilti tools now have a GPRS/GPS style bit of location tracking for theft deterrent.

    My L class is exactly the same as the M class, still trying to work out the difference. Don’t like the on/off button? Get the Bluetooth remote for the hose - works a treat when not using Bluetooth batteries, or when you want a simple clean up at the end of a job! :)

    Festool. Way overpriced in Australia that vac is $350 in America. Transport isn't that dear. Between the Government duty and so many middlemen taking too big a slice we get ripped off. Old Festool tools were quality and less gimmicky. Still good engineering but too many quirky bits of green plastic and strange ergonomics. Parts also cost the earth and even consumables often specific to Festool so you can't buy generic. For the price they sell for in the States some tools worth a look. Here less so.
