Thru-Hiking Behind the Scenes: Outtakes, Bloopers and Extras from the Appalachian Trail

- On my Appalachian Trail Thru-Hike in 2018, I took a lot of video. Most of the unused scenes were deleted to make more room on my phone, but I discovered there was enough raw footage still available to show some outtakes, bloopers, and extra scenes that didn't make it into my series. I also included some longer segments of scenes that DID make it into the series.
I didn't think to do a video like this until I saw that "Darwin on the Trail" did an outtakes video for his Pacific Crest Trail Thru-Hike. So thanks to Darwin!
And here is Liz Kidder's RUclips channel: / @lizkidder
If you want to support to Appalachian Trail, you can become a member of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. (I did!) You can also support the trail by contributing to 2018 thru-hiker's Bruce Matson's "RTK Challenge," in which donations are matched by Bruce up to $100,000. (I did this too!) Bruce's fund-raiser is still ongoing even now in December, 2018. Details here: bit.ly/2HxX5tA
The trail lore I talked about in my AT videos was derived from my reading about the AT. A full bibliography is given in the description to the first video in this series (AT #1).

Five years old and STILL some of the GREATEST of ALL HIKING VIDEOS. Thx Evan. Again
Love this Evan! Miss you guys so much!!!!😭😭😭
your videos are garbage.
Jacob Poucher Your videos don’t exist.
That’s the kind of burn that makes me reconsider taking the burn gel out of my first aid kit for my thru-hike in 3 weeks 😂😂
You are a genuine guy, Evan.
Congratulations!
Evan, your insight and education to the viewers is much appreciated. Thank you very much for sharing your journey. I can only imagine how much work and time went into all your videos.
Thanks for the nice comment!
U tube aint the same without you. Your an original brother.
Evan, I'm late to the game, but I just binge watched your entire AT series. Loved every minute of it. You were engaging, personable, and informative. I felt like you did a great job of capturing a lot more than just some great views. Loved watching your relationship with the trail as well as your friendship with Liz and Luke. Here's to hoping you decide to come out of youtube retirement some day! I want to comment a million thoughts but I'll spare you the novel. Thanks for the well done videos, and congrats on your hike!
PS: when I started my binge I kept seeing this video pop up and I thought "doubt I'll watch that one" but 41 videos later, here I am haha.
Thanks for the nice comment!
I love to hear Liz laugh when she thinks no one is listening
Hot Dam! Sure am glad Evan has returned. Saludos! Great video too.
Oh and the Chili and Green beans. Love that stuff. I even add some corn. woo!
I caught myself smiling several times throughout this vid. Thanks for making it and sharing it with us. Enjoyed seeing you on the reunion vid with Liz and Luke in Nashville and Max Patch on her channel. She called you a retired RUclipsr. I say you should come out of retirement. 🙂
Your videos have inspired me to get out more and explore the outdoors, thanks Evan! Also, I would like to point out that the guy on the left during the handstand competition looks very comfortable. 5:30
I came across your Thru-Hike documentary, and then I binge watched all of LIz's AT videos, and came back to binge watch all of yours. Congratulations (again) on completing the hike. I used to live a couple of miles from the AT in Monroe NY and did a couple of day hikes/overnights to the entrance of Bear Mountain state park, hence why I was attracted to your series. I think it was great that you made such good friends along the way. I appreciated all of your insights and the interesting footnotes to the areas your were hiking through. I hope you, Liz, and Luke are all well.
Thanks for the comment! Yes, we're all well.
I’ve been watching your videos the past few days. I really enjoyed your footage and details along the way. Raw and real! Thank you for your inspiration and sharing the journey!
Evan, your outtakes are hilarious. Sam is a superstar. I would love a video interviewing Andrea and Sam and their thoughts about your hike. Sam should totally do the soundtrack :-) . Welcome back to RUclips!
Thank you for another video Evan, I’ve missed you!
Thank you for a great job !
I hope you amend your decision and hike on video some more - maybe the PCT
I concur that I hope you will again go on some hiking adventures and take us along.
Dang, that was hard work. The vlogging, I mean. Thanks again for taking us along with you guys.
Followed you from Sheltowee Trace. Thanks for all the wonderful footage. I'm hoping you're not done sharing your adventures/experiences publicly.
Oh! What an unexpected bit of FUN! Thank you, Evan! Love the reality you share! Hope you have had lots of great time to enjoy your family since home... thank you to Evan's family for sharing him with us too!
Thanks, Evan. This really helps to reveal how much work a well produced hiking vlog is on top of the actual hike. It's like working 2 jobs at the same time. Hope you change your mind and keep the new hikes coming on your channel. Yours is one of the best.
Thanks, appreciate that!
Great behind the scene shots and video! Awesome footage from a great adventure! Many memories to ponder this holiday, thanks e-Wolf/Reverend.
Thanks for allowing us a view behind the curtain Evan!
Thanks again Even for the nice video. It was like seeing some old friends that I haven't seen in awhile. Nice.
Awesome Evan, it really shows all the hard work that you did, not just the hike in itself but in vlogging. Thank you for all you did and what you shared. Hoping you aren’t really “done” would love to see more of your hikes. Be well.
Hey Evan.....so glad that you decided to share another video from your great adventure with us. You and Liz are the reason why I decided last week that I don't want it to be only a dream to do the AT and now start to plan my AT for 2023. Sadly there are not a lot of Germans, only one with a complete Thruhike, who did vlogging their Thruhike but with seeing all of your videos and your advice for other youtubers like Liz, Amanda, Dixie ( I'm a woman so I think it's nature to look about other women experiences) and many more I feel confident to make this wish come true and prepare as best as possible. Thank you very much for your great work and that you took us with you on your journey at the AT. I learned a lot and like another wrote before - it's like you follow a dear friend - you feel with him. His up's and downs, his joy, pain, the goals and also setpacks. I was so excited to see you at the top of Kathadin. You did an amazing and great job. I'm glad that I could be a little part of it while you shared it so generously, smart, emotional, with a sense of humor and a loads of good advice. Best wishes for you and your family.
Thanks for the great comment! I really appreciate it. And good luck with your thru-hike!
I miss you guys already! Glad you decided to share these out takes and extras. Just watched Liz's Q and A and reunion videos, good to see you guys back together again. Hope Yelp is able to at least keep in touch too,
Appreciate these! Thanks for sharing. I love the vids you and Liz put out, even though watching several years later. Very personable, Makes it feel like you’re friends! Awesome
Thanks for watching and for the comment! Yes, people are still watching and commenting -- it's not too late I guess. Doesn't seem that long ago to me!
Great to see you back on RUclips Evan! Enjoyed the reunion video with Liz and Luke as well as the Q&A. You always produced great videos and I enjoyed them all. I hope to take you up on the Nashville “look you up” one day offer and share a meal or drink. I haven’t thru hiked, but have a few miles under my belt with plans for many more. Again, thanks for taking us along. Don’t be a stranger sir.
Evan!! I’m going thru withdrawals since this hiking season is over 😩
You ain't the only one.
Evan, so glad there is more!
I once made the comment here on your channel, pondering the thought that an AT thru hike...was best done as a solitary en devour. Everyone has their own personal reasons for setting out on such a journey. But you've got a great example about why hiking with others in a team...is a great way to go about it.
I was so excited when I saw that you had posted a video again. Thank you so much we miss you
Evan, really enjoyed revisiting your hike. I hope you do another long hike in the future and film it for us . 🤠
🙂 Nice! I wish I would have known you were a musician when we met. I’ve been playing guitar for 43 years. My real life job has me workin on guitars everyday. I own a repair shop. Thanks for posting your hike brother. It was great to meet you and talk very briefly! 👊🏻
Yes, I love the guitar! Thanks for watching and commenting.
An unexpected delight!!! You are a hoot 💙 And a an excellent hiker - your videos are the Best
Thanks for putting this together!
I was so excited to see your video pop up! Thanks again for all the hard work with videoing your hike.
Thank you so taking us along on your adventure. I looked forward each week for your next video and as others have said, have missed you. No doubt you have a talent for communication and a spirit for sharing. Best wishes to you and your family in wherever the next path takes you.
Thanks!
This was great ; enjoyable seeing the in between areas.
I’m sitting here with my granddaughter Emery watching your videos to help pass the time between aftershocks of the quake that rocked Anchorage on Friday... schools will be closed for sometime to come . We have been enjoying your journey ! Thank you Evan.
Jean Ward from Alaska
You're welcome, and good luck in Alaska!!
The last shot from the summit of Hump is my favorite. When I was up there last week, I remembered how you carried the sticks up with you to pitch your tarp. Love the outtakes!
Wow, you're right, that was my set-up on Hump!
Thanks Evan!I have been wondering how your post hike has been going.Good to see you again.
Thanks Evan! Miss your videos
Keeping it real
Love and miss your videos
Evan, thanks for the fun video. Followed you from your first videos when preparing for your hike. Thanks for your comittment to share your adventure .
You did a great job... All around! Top 3 vlogs I've watched. It was educational and interesting!
This is great! I am going to go back and watch your journey.
Love it! What an incredible journey! There's been a surprising amount on content on this channel since some guy announced there would be no more content on this channel. 😀 I hope to see more and hear more of your music (I know I can go to the other site and listen, but I like the backpacking part too!)
Thanks, nice comment, appreciate it!
Great video! It was nice to see everybody again.
Good Peps. Thanks for sharing this journey.
Very cool video Evan! I am always glad to see another one of your AT videos pop up. Thanks for sharing!
Yay, I made the outtakes. :)
This was a very nice surprise, absolutely awesome footage, thanks for sharing
You're welcome!
I love your videos Evan, but man what a pain to go through the process of making them! But of course I hope you never completely stop.
Hi Evan! Welcome back. Welcome back. Welcome back. Welcome back.
Love it.....just absolutely enjoy the videos...thanks again
I really enjoyed this - feels like a "normal" day out on the trail! LoL
You guys are awesome ❤️
Thank You, Evan, I truly enjoyed your videos. Merry Christmas to you and your family :)
Great job with this video Evan! 👍 I have a pile of unseen bloopers from my RUclips videos. 😅
I bet you do!
Big treat when this showed up today...thanks Evan, really miss your videos....now, its time for a new hiking trip vid....come on, make it happen.. we are all waiting...another smokies trip ?????
And Thank you! This was fun.
New subscriber here....I'm just trying to break through the "talking to the camera" barrier. It seems I have mostly bloopers and outtakes and completely fail at telling the story. While you mention being done with your channel, I seriously doubt it. When we find the sense of adventure awakens something deep within us, there's just no way we can simply turn that primal feeling off. It needs to be fed, and it grows hungrier with each trip. May 2019 bless us all with more adventures and let us explore the beautiful world we live in.
Thanks! I said I was finished with the channel, but I'm certainly not finished with backpacking. I've been doing it a long time!
"YouTubin ain't easy". Always enjoy your videos even the bloopers.
This was great. Thanks for sharing.
Another great vidio Evan!
This is awesome I love when people show outtakes and such. Saying action would make me feel a little silly. The other people I hike and film with we just let the cameras go and see what happens.
OH!! You reminded me that I think I missed many of your early AT videos!! I must...GO BACK!!!!! And I really will. ... And you and Liz must have a special bond! ... And somehow, you, Liz, Luke, and Yelp were the Fantastic Four! ... And, HEY!, What's not to love about a pack-over-the-head-shot?!
Evan - enjoyed this video very much and am now watching your other videos. I do a lot of camping/hiking with my boy scouts. AT is a bucket-list item for me but the clock is ticking (I'm 64) and not sure I'll be able to do it; my knees struggle on routine day hikes now. How do people take off from work and family for 5 months??!! If I win the lottery that will provide the time and money to prep and do it!
Great video Evan!! I also liked the Q&A you did with Luke and Liz! I'm gonna look ya up one day, i'm about 11/2 hours east of you in Jackson County. I wanna thru hike GA. sometime in the near future and I wanna pick your brain!
First off this video gave me some tips on shooting video, thanks, Second, I now know you did not rattle all those facts about places off the top of your head :), Thanks for sharing.
No, I did a lot of research for a year leading up to my hike, as if I were writing a book. The research went onto my phone in a way that made it easy to get to. (I used the Evernote app.) Most of my research never made it into the videos, but I think it made the hike more enjoyable . . .
Awesome thanks for sharing. In Nashville a lot so maybe meet up just shake your hand and say thanks for the journey. Take care.
Awesome Evan, let me know when you’re headed to the Smokies. I’m sure ole Scott Saline and I could get a few miles in with ya.
I miss seeing your videos Evan! I do still enjoy seeing your art sketches on instagram 😊
Thanks, appreciate that!
Hi there Evan !!! Interesting vlog behind the scenes !! Very cool 😎
Thanks for the comment, as always!
Being in Vermont for work the last couple months has strengthened my resolve for 2020 thru hike of the AT. I plan on doing practice hikes this spring in both the Green and White Mountains every weekend. Though I'd love to meet up over the holidays as im going home to family in Memphis if you have time.
I’m not available over the holidays but let me know if you get back to Nashville.
Very cool! I didn't know you made mistakes--good to know that you're human! Actually, I'll be in Nashville tomorrow through Wednesday. Maybe you'll see me running around town in the mornings.
Hope to see you at Trail Days next year.
great video
❤️❤️😄👏👏. I really love the vids you n Liz have done and seeing the bloopers and question n answer vids give my confidence to start making my vids so thank you thank you so much. 👏👏👏❤️
Good luck with your videos!
My name is Evan and I enjoy backpacking, so I felt obligated to subscribe.
Hah!
So you didn't always get it on the 1st take . . . thanks for sharing this!
Your videos are truly awesome, Ive enjoyed watching your AT hike and it has only made me want to do it more so. Its kind of sad to see how staged some of this can be, but on the other hand, Its not a bad thing. But your amazing group should just be yourselves in these videos!
I love the "action" to start filming. I hope if anyone broke the rule that you yelled QUIET ON SET :)
Who says film making is easy?
I'm missing your insightful, interesting videos. I think it's high time you started again ;)
Fun stuff. Loved the May Apple patch at 4 minuets in. Hand stand off was cool! Them rat snakes stink. Van camps chili for me thanks. Lol it’s good to show the blogs because it’s not always easy. You did a awesome job recording and editing this adventure.
Have you started the watching over of them yet?
Thanks Calvin! I had to watch them all once in order to make the re-edited 1.5-hour version . . . It was a chore!
“Action” 😀 lol love y’all!
Awesome!
Very nice. Chili and Green Beans. 😂
That was great Evan. Glad you showed another video. Was that last shot of your tarp from the reunion trip to max patch?
Thanks Scott! The last shot was on the AT from the summit of Hump Mt.
Yay, an Evan fix. Great stuff, makes me appreciate the vids that much more - thanks!! Quick question, I can't believe I didn't think of till now. Did you ever have issues with your glasses fogging on the trail, and if so, did you find any great remedies? Thanks again for a great and unique perspective on the AT!
I only had a few issues. Some people suggested some remedies but I didn't try them. On my other long hikes, I used contacts, but just before the AT I got an eye infection so I didn't want to risk it . . .
Do more videos Evan. We have plenty of great places here in Tennessee that need you to do a video.
Tennessee is the best (or one of the best) for backpacking! I covered a lot of my favorite trails in the years before I hiked the AT . . .
Quiet on the set might have been more appropriate. Are you training for the CDT? ;)
I was sort of struck by how poor the food choices were for the trail by both you and Liz - I was surprised and wondered how come? Lots of sugar and carbs compared to a more ideal fat and protein intake. But you made the hike and I didn’t - I guess it worked for you. But then again - Velveeta?
Most people thru-hiking 2,200 miles eat a high-carb diet, which is questionable in my opinion. I was in the 1% that did a high fat diet. At home, I eat less than 50 carbs a day and have been doing that for years. As for the quality of the food on the trail, it’s all bad. You have to buy your food at gas stations, dollar general, etc; had no refrigeration; I didn’t cook or have a stove. I ate a whole lot of cream cheese. I would have preferred to take you with me as my chef, but ...
Evan's Backpacking Videos - You’re right - my longest trail-time was only a month. We got resupplied two weeks in. We had wheels of cheese and whole hard salamis which I would definitely carry again. Today I would have lots of dried fruits and nuts I absolutely love them. Add to that my favorite organic peanut butters (ingredients are peanuts and salt only) and almond butter. Definitely lots of protein bars - Clif bars, Kind bars, Rx bars. Raw organic honey, black strapmolasses, maple syrup. I guess resupplying these items would have to be by mail if they aren’t available locally. I would want to buy in bulk before heading out and mail myself these various items. My newest discovery is the powder I use to make a “green drink” - I do this at home daily. I wish my photo of the ingredients list came out better so you could see how healthy it is - I definitely feel the lift every time I drink it. I’d probably always have some in my water bottle. Cold soaks like with oats seem like a great idea and there are some quick and easy recipes I would try at home before heading out, like making bannock bread and split pea soup from split pea flour. Packages of tuna but no jerky unless it’s home-made. Making myself hungry. I like my coffee too - have to find the best way to make it, and then I would add Ceylon cinnamon, honey, and coconut oil or butter. That’s how I start my days now, my super coffee and the green drink. I realize this would take a lot of planning and accurate logistics but, in the end, it would all be wasted on me since I am already 76 with two bad knees and a bad back. My hiking days may be all over since I can hardly walk right now - I’m just having trouble accepting that.
Harley Neal Thanks for the long comment with the good ideas!
Great job Evan. It's just not as easy as it looks is it ?
Miss your video's man. Hope all is well
Not sure where my comment went! Love all of your videos. I want to set up trail magic near Franklin or Helen or Wayah Bald, I’m the spring time. When would be a good weekend? What should we cook/serve? How can I only make sure it’s for thru hikers and not day hikers? Thanks
I'm not much of an expert on trail magic so I'm not sure. The ATC might have some resources.
You do a great job with your videos! I'm curious, which program do you use to edit them?
I put that information in the video description. It depends, but on the trail I used LumaFusion on my iPhone.
Awesome stuff. So how old are you during the hike? and about how many miles did Pappi end up doing?
Not sure about Pappy--maybe 2/3 of the trail? I was 55 during the hike . . .
Miss you Evan , ever think of bike touring ,and making videos about it?
No, but that's a good idea . . .
Hey Evan. I think your videos are awesome and I recently found out that you use your own music. I was just wondering what you used for that. I’m looking into irig but figured I would try and reach out to you first. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and Happy hiking ⛰
I have a lot of music equipment--various DAW's and an iMaschine, all linked to a Casio electric piano. Plus I can record guitar into the system. Sort of a large set-up . . .
