I love Judy Davis in all things, particularly 'Me and My Shadows'. The TV movie was well done, supervised by daughter Lorna Luft, signed off by the family and cast with actresses at the appropriate stages of her life. Nevertheless, the film told her whole life story through the lens of her daughter's book and Judy Davis lip-synched her entire role. 'Judy' isn't an autobiography - it tells the very last weeks of Garland's life. Weeks, not years. If you look at the real artist in photos and videos, it was clear she was on her last leg. Renee did her a kindness by portraying her as, even fictionally, someone who was still trying to hold it together. The truth was that she was a serious addict and she had wrecked her health trying to keep up a certain lifestyle. Renee didn't play only the dark side of her and she didn't try to mimic her - she paid homage to her and that, to me, is what makes her performance shine.

I suspect "Judy" will be my next favorite camp film, so bad it's great, perhaps even supplanting "Valley of the Dolls." There's a lot of silliness and- I use the term loosely- artistic license. Two things especially strike me. Firstly, Renee's talking and singing through the nose ("on the winnnnnng" at 2:15), a style Judy would find laughable. And it seemed quite important to make Judy's famous small, pointy nose larger and rounder (at 8:35). Like many others, I smell an Oscar. I also smell something else.

@@percyweasley9301 A bit late, but yes, I was waiting until I could get if for free. Total hogwash for people unfamiliar with Judy. Renee looks no more like Judy than the many drag queens right up here on RUclips. There's not even the slightest attempt to get things right about Judy, things documented by legitimate biographers. Renee and Rupert think they're great artistes (with an e) because they could fool the public. I say nertz... if anyone still says that.

Disagree using Judy voice is not right the film based at end of Judy Garland life her voice has lost most of the power.

@@JordanjamesX Maybe so but that rawness in her voice at that stage of her life would fit the story better, imho, instead we just have Renee trying to recreate something that can't be recreated.

Then many would complain they used Judy's voice... Renee captured it using her voice as a complete Muse of character. BRAVO 👏 Oscar Worthy

Marisa Sullivan But it wouldn’t have seemed right at all to me. I wasn’t really a fan of how they did it in Bohemian Rhapsody as it even looked fake. Whereas Rocketman, where Taron Egerton actually sang, was a lot better even though he didn’t actually sound 100% like Elton. Judy is a great film and it wouldn’t be the same film if they had Renee lip sync. That’s just my opinion on the matter.

The depth of analysis in describing the physical details is wonderful. Movies are highly dependent on cinematography to communicate a particular mood or time or place. As important as these things are I have to think that few people pay much attention to them. That is until someone like Emmanuel Lubezki wins three consecutive Academy Awards for Best Cinematography for Gravity (2013), Birdman (2014), and The Revenant (2015).

I watched this movie two nights ago and understand why the hype died. Much like ‘bohemian rhapsody’, something was missing. Both ‘Rocketman’ and ‘a star is born’ are movies that WRECK you. This didn’t quite get there. I felt bad for Judy and the product of the system she’d become. Hollywood should be ashamed. That being said, something was still missing.
