This video has literally been months in the making. At the start of the year I thought about using the front of my workshop as a test case to try out different outdoor wood finishes on my hardwood cladding. Conversations with my website members and the Woodworkers UK forum on Facebook have brought me finally to releasing the first part of this series comparing different types of outdoor finish on hardwood Keruing cladding. I've no idea how this is going to progress and I would be really interested to hear your thoughts and ideas either through the comments section or via my social media. I hope you enjoy this video, out of the 200 plus videos I have created since I started this RUclips adventure, this is one of the top ones I am most proud of.
As ever, thank you so much for your continued support in my disability woodworking adventures. Best Wishes, Leo Winstanley

Should have 1m plus views given the effort. Well done mate
@@phoenix25140 Thanks Nathan, hopefully it’ll be a slow burner so interest will grow 🤞😀👍
9 out of 10! Sure, even you dog thinks you highlighting the best colors around in a smooth application! ))
Thank you for the kind feedback, much appreciated 👍😀
@@Hand-i-Craft I keep 10 out of 10 for myself but got no use for that yet. ))
The oils and the Sikkens look GREAT, not a fan of the rest, especially the rubio monocoat, look forward to an update in a few years. Thanks for experimenting on your building so the rest of us can benefit from the knowledge!
@@Tom-fz6pe thanks Tom 😀👍
Looks beautiful. I’ve had a similar ideas, painting a house that way only side to side. I was watching us because I didn’t know what the best thing I could use for a project of mine not realizing I would not see the results for another year.😊
Thanks for the kind feedback Robert. Apologies I can’t accelerate the process to bring you some answers!
Every three months sounds good, be interested how it turns out.👍
Thanks Paul 👍😀
That looks great Leo, I love the horizontal bands contrast, really smart. What a labour of love as well, that’s more effort than I put into decorating indoors in our house. Great job, Rob.
Cheers Rob, certainly was a labour of love pal and be interesting to see how it develops over a year 👍👍
@@Hand-i-Craft I would have done the panels vertically but I realise that would have looked really strange (more likely to win the Turner prize!), that looks so stylish
Looks great. Really liked the two oils at the top. Great work
Thanks Mark, yes me too. I think it gives a really nice contrast 😀👍
Hi Leo, we have used Sadolin Superdec on our shutters in France where they get pretty brutal sunshine in summer. After a less than adequate prep in 2010 (tricky to clean out the grooves in the T&G construction) the first go lasted over 10 years. I repainted them about then as the finish was still very good and it did minimal prep with just a light sanding and I expect to get at least another 10 years out of this. Of course this is a water based paint not a stain and is quite expensive but it has easily outlasted your workshop with very little work. On new timber I expect it would have done even better. I will send you a photo by email.
Thanks Mike and the Sadolin products sound very interesting indeed. Will check my email now 👍😀👍😀
Great video Leo, really interested to see the results of this down the line. Would be interesting to know a bit more of what the price per square meter was for each you applied. And some close-up shots of each layer when you come back to review progress in a few months time : )
Great suggestions and cheers for the message pal. Hope all is going well for you with the workshop 👍👍
@@Hand-i-Craft thanks, yeah getting there! Have the barn empty finally now! Hopefully get another video up this weekend. : )
Quarterly updates plenty good enough
Sounds like a plan pal 👍👍
Great video Leo. I have had Sikkens on my garden doors and gates for about 15 years now. It has just started to peel in a few places. Superb product. The woof has started to deteriorate on the door that is sun facing most of day but I think that’s due to rain really. My north facing door is just starting to look a bit worn. I am literally on the North West coast in Marshside, Southport so I get battered by the weather.
I am very interested in the Rubio Product. I have a set of table and chairs that needs re-coating so this experiment may decide my choice of covering.
Please do regular updates, even if via Shorts.
Ken from Sunny ☀️ Southport.
Thanks Ken, I’m really interested to see how they all cope with our type of climate. I’d say, based on feedback, the Sikkens is the one to ‘beat’ 🤔🤷♂️
@@Hand-i-Craft The Sikkens is a fantastic product but it is still just a coating. I’m interested in the Durogrit because it makes a chemical bond with the top layer of the wood as Rubio Monocoat does. I have a large hard wood planter that I coated with Rubio pre-treatment Sunprimer HWP and the Rubio Hybrid Wood Protecter. It seems to holding up very well over winter.
Ken
Hi Leo , following up on our previous comments on Osmo UV, I loved the fact that at around 33s you said you were less than impressed with the Osmo UV your dog wandered off screen! Obviously a fine judge of wood finishes 😉. Wait until someone brings out a finish that can withstand leg cocking.
Thanks John, yes the dog knows his stuff 😂😂😂
Excellent Leo , experiment aside I really like the look of it !! Very modern looking. Looking forward to seeing the results over time 👌🏻
Thank you, very kind of you and yes I’m looking forward to seeing how it goes 🤷♂️😀👍
Great experiment. Good luck with the Turner prize :)
Thanks John and I’ll keep you posted about my application 😂😂😂
Hard work for you but could resand one strip of Rubio and clean with Rubio cleaner.
I must admit I am tempted to do it to one strip pal and it then gives a comparison against everything including its own product that hasn’t used the cleaner. The only issue then though is it has been prepped differently to all of the others 🤷♂️
Could you clean the bottom panel with the Rubio wood cleaner and then apply the DuroGrit to it?
I know it will get more water but it’s a premium exterior product and you’ll get an idea if it was easier to apply
That’s a great idea Dave 👍👍
Should be a great test of finishes. Would be nice to see updates a few times a year and after a year
Cheers Vern and will do 👍
For the last panel I would mix all of them together and see what happens 🫣
🤔🤔😳😳😂😂😂😂😂😂
Very interesting. On my Garden Cabin I used colured weather resistant paint and have to say it has weathered well. 2 years in and looks the same as when applied.
Cheers, and good to hear about your experiences 👍😀
You sir have some real dedication to a project! Regards Fred ps finally got my kingspan roof on my shed upgrade after watching your build.pps I’ve always used Sadolin treatments but now have clad exterior with metal panels very industrial look to my shed 😊
Thanks Fred, just out of interest how did you get on with fitting the panels? 😀👍
Great job Leo, I love the colours of the Rubio and Sikkens. Can imagine it would look great all sikkens but with them 2 Rubio as an accent strip.
Personally I’d leave the bottom row raw to see how it looks and if it releases more sap than any of the others.
Cheers Scott, someone suggested cleaning the bottom layer with the Rubio wood cleaner they sent me and applying the monocoat, I think that’s a good idea🤷♂️
Hi Leo. hope your well, lovely contrasts with the different finishes. I have tried 4 parts turps substitute and unicorn milk it doesn't work, what you need is 200 ml of dragons blood crushed ant ankles three daffodils, toe nail clippings from a Wrexham footballer mixed with 2 litres of water from the River Dee, I tried that and that didn't work either🤣🤣
I would never thought of Tite Bond and water I suppose that will dry naturally, i think you done well with Tung and turp substitute and a fraction of the cost of Osmo oil which was disappointing for £70. You have done a great job on the scrapping and sanding back and all those finishes looks good and you should get the Turner Prize.
As always a great video, catch you soon Take care mate
Hello Shaun, I’m ok thanks pal. Been pretty busy as you can see! It is going to be really interesting how this turns out, I guess the Sikkens is the one to beat, but who knows and we’ll find out over the course of time 👍
@@Hand-i-Craft Sikkens has a nice finish, keep up the great work Leo
@@shaun30-3-mg9zs Yes mate, the Sikkens finish once I put that Filter 7 stuff on was 🤩🤩🤩
Sikkens its tried an tested
Based on what folk have told me about it, I think that is the one to beat 👍👍
Im very interested in how the rubio durogrit holds up. Im about to use that to 'restore' some sleepers that have been built into raised beds.
I would have used the grassland beige for a more natural colour. Personally, i don't think the rubio wood cleaner would be necessary. When i emailed regarding the previous finish of the sleepers, they mentioned nothing about the cleaner. Only that it would be suitable for the application i wanted to use it for.
As for updates. Maybe after a week to see the tones of each once fully cured. Then every 3 months.
I definitely appreciate the effort you have put in. All that sanding and cleaning is probably what my eternity in hell is going to look like😅
Thanks Phil, excuse the cynic in me but if the Rubio does not perform as well as they claim, it gives them a reason because I didn’t use their wood cleaner. Also the extreme cynic in me suggests that’s why it is so loosely worded on their instructions 🤔🤷♂️
I have a garden room workshop with Red Cedar cladding which looks great so from new I used the very very expensive Owatrol Textrol HES which seemed to be what a lot of people use on Red Cedar. After one winter it looked terrible, covered in black spot mould, greying and generally scruffy. I sanded it with 80grit to remove the Owatrol product and after advice from Wood Finishes Direct, applied two coats of Barrantine wood preserver followed by two coats of Manning Premium Decking Oil. After a very wet winter it still looked great and water still beaded on the surface. This summer I have just given it a top up of the Manning Premium Decking Oil which is very easy and quick to use. I would be very interested to know the result if you spray water on your experiment ie which products shrug off the water the best. I look forward to the long term results so thanks for doing this.
Thanks for the comment Steve and sounds like you’ve got a really good system in place now. The water runoff is an interesting idea and something I’ll try out or film when it’s raining 👍👍
I'm interested in this as I, too, have cladding coated in the osmo uv protection oil which is looking poor and will require sanding back and recoated with an alternative. Interested on the sikkens, but notice you have used the Teak colour for this. Any reason you have went for lighter shades with some and darker shades with others? I Would think the long term results will differ quite a lot depending on what shade you use. The darker the shade of product equals more pigmentation and in turn more uv resistance generally.
Thanks for the comment. It wasn’t a deliberate intention to go for vastly darker colours, I think teak was probably closest to the natural keruing colouring. The Rubio arrived and immediately I realised it would be much darker than I thought, but still decided to test it anyway 👍
Great experiment. I'll follow with interest. I wonder whether the problem you had with Osmo was that the timber was very oily and therefore it struggled to adhere? I've used Osmo a bit and have been very happy with the results (but never used it outside).
It’s possible Ian what you said about the Osmo. However that is the reason I gave it a second chance one year on. The boards had plenty of time to weather and the same happened again 🤷♂️
👍👍👍 Interesting project. One question is your carnauba wax suitable for exterior use?. For example wooden house sign. Thanks Leo
Good question Pete. I’d have to do a test to find out, what I’d suggest is maybe using a specific outdoor finish and applying a couple of coats of my wax after 🤔🤔
@@Hand-i-Craft
Thank you Leo 👍
Every three months would work work me, unless of course, things go wobbly for any reason
Cheers Paul 👍😀
How many tack cloths did you get through??😂
Too many my friend 😂😂😂
Don’t risk it use the samples
The wood itself will be fine George as it can cope without any kind of finish, it’ll just grey. I only asked about the other stuff to see if there was any interest in the product 👍👍
Not convinced about the "use our cleaner" thing. The product info basically says it's a detergent cleaner with some boicides/fungicides. If you were to use this as part of your test for one product, you should really be pre-prepping all boards with a similar off-the-shelf product that does that job (several domestic cleaners fit the bill). However, the way you have now set the test up will give a fair, like-for-like comparison of products applied in a way which most people would follow.
Have to agree with all of your comments here pal 😀😀👍👍, thanks for sharing 👍
My money is on Sikkens, It's my goto exterior finish been using it over 30yrs. Leo you have a very unhealthy attraction to Tack Cloths! bit over the top for an outside finish on furniture 100%
I think I might need tack cloth therapy pal😂😂. I was thinking of using Sikkens on my garden bench, is it suitable for horizontal surfaces too?
@@Hand-i-Craft yes just allow 24hrs to dry between coats
