Finally somebody that knows that starting in ‘78 the choice of round lights with square bezel or higher models like my Ranger XLT had square lights with square bezel. I can’t tell you how many times people would tell me my truck is a 1979 when actually it is a 1978. Knowledge is Golden, ignorance is bliss.
yeps my brother in law had a 79 ford pickup with square headlights i remember i was 18 years old he bought it when he was in the marines stationed in california
I remember riding with my father the day he drove his new 1977 F250 Custom Crewcab home from the dealer in fall of 1976. The fact that I drove in one of these brand new is a cool memory now, it’s just unbelievable that was almost 50 years ago now!
Great video. I own a 1975 F150 Ranger XLT with a 390 and C6. One of many dentsides I’ve owned over the years. They are my favourite trucks from that era.
that yard would be a dream come true for me, the dentside fords are my very favourite trucks. i would love to restore a 79 250 one day if i can afford too
I have a 78 I bought from a 1 owner in 97 . It had 98k miles swb 4x4 351m auto. I sold it to my brother in 08. He took it apart down to frame, he said he was gonna restore it. I have no idea why he wanted to do that. He had motor rebuilt , there was noting going on with the motor. Anyways I got it back from him, he never put it back together. Gonna start putting it back together this summer. Love the older ford trucks
Bought a 1978 F150 4X4 shortbed with 400, automatic. Custom model, with AC and heavy duty seat. The dealer was a friend of my dads, so he swapped out the round headlights for the square when I picked it up. I have this truck today. Its in perfect condition, with around 100K miles. The 400 has a 2 barrel carb, which is terrible, so I'm in the process of installing a Holly EFI. The AC is R-12 and blows cold ...... added 1/2 can of Freon about 20 years ago.
Great video. A few corrections though 1. The first year the 302 was available in truck was 1970. 2. The 100 mph was used in trucks 73-76, then in 77 they switched to the 85 mph with kph. 3. 77 was the first year for the 400/351m in trucks. The 400 is not an m and came out in 71. They called the 351m because they destroked the 400 to make the 351m. 4. 77 and up only had the fuel door, 76 and older just had the cap. I’ve always loved these trucks, I have 76 2wd long bed and a 77 4wd short bed and love them. I’d like to have a whole yard full of them like that guys got.
Absolutely feller..my 77 high boy got fuel tank behind the seat and fuel door but my bed is in bad shape will 73- 79 half ton fit without refit'n ..what will fit by takin old off and the other on without refit'n
Very informative! Never knew all the minute differences between models within each generation. Love the white dent side 4wd 250. Those wheel wells are SO clean to my northeastern eyes
keep em till he dies and not deo a damn thing too them. If he worked over 10 minutes hed have a stroke and ndie, then his ole lady will makwe you a deal
Another great video. Thank you. If I'm not mistaken, 1976 and prior trucks have the round gas cap mounted on the side of the bed and 1977 and up have a square gas door covering the gas cap. Keep 'em Up-N-Runnin.
Some good info, but a lot of bad info also. Ford's all had drip rails. They did not stop putting the fuel tank in the cab in 1973. The 4x4 was available every year of this body style truck. The square headlights are part of the explorer and ranger package in 1978.
The early 77 F250 4x4 was the last of the in cab tanks, the rest half of the frame on the F250’s was narrower than the other models in 73 to early 77 4x4’s necessitating the in cab tank. The late 77 to 79 had the rear mounted tank with the mid side mount auxiliary tank added as an option.
Rectangular lights weren't necessarily part of the Explorer package. The Explorer package was just an optional add-on package to the Ranger trim level in 78, so you could only get rectangular lights with it.
The F-150s were basically optional heavy duty half ton pickups just like Chevy's Big 10s at the time because the base F-100s were still in production up through 1983.
73-75 had the same grill. 76 and 77 had essentially the same grill but with a few minor differences. 1978 and 1979 was a completely different grill and Ford was moved from the grill to the hood. The only difference between a 1978 and 1979 was square headlights were standard on all models in '79. They were available on the Ranger package in 1978 otherwise the round headlights were standard on all models in '78 except the Ranger. Also, the model badges (F100, 150, 250, etc.) were on the front fenders from 1973-76 and moved to the hood cowl for 1977. The package badges (Custom, Ranger, etc) were on the located on the bed underneath the marker lights from 73-76 before being moved to the hood cowl in 1977. 73-76 had external fuel caps and 77-79 had fuel doors.
That blue shortbox is perfect! I just started messing with mine that's very similar minus the manual plus the trim. bought it when I was 14 for $800, 20 years ago. Any idea what one's worth? I've been trying to find a general idea but I couldn't find a lot on factory shortbox values. Loved the video thanks guys!
@1:10 The 460 wasn't offered on the F250 4x4, AKA Highboy. For some reason, they didn't do that and it might have been a better choice over the 360 FE. Sadly, didn't see any Highboys in this video... One of the best trucks ever.

I had 2 1974 Ford F-250 2wd custom pickup trucks. Both had dual tanks, 1 had 1 ton springs and brakes and a trailer brake. Both had 6.4 litre 390 FE motors that I did some mods to the engines. The 1 with 1 ton springs had a 4 speed with a heavy duty clutch I put in. The other had a C6 tranny that I had rebuilt with a shift kit. Either truck could tow just about anything and had Dick Cepek tires on 1, armstrong all season radials on the other.
Interesting video, ive got an Australian built 1977 RHD short wheel base 2wd 6 cylinder custom (base model) Mostly like the US models.
