For many of us, its not that we can't afford those "flagship" phones, its that we just don't care. Its just a phone, and the actual world around us is so amazing, no piece of tech could ever capture it in a way that truly approximates the direct experience that comes from being present in every moment :)

Exactly. I've never spent more than $200 on a phone, and usually way less. I keep them for 2+ years. IDK why people need to have the latest high dollar phones.

Agreed. Whenever I go on vacation with my family, they're always taking pictures and recording videos, while I just take it all in and just enjoy the moment. The phone will never capture nor replicate the experience of being there. I was looking to just get myself a dumb phone for basic calls and texts, but I find that I actually really need certain apps for my everyday life that I just can't get on a dumb phone. So budget smart phones are great for this reason.
However, I do feel that if someone is into photography and video, they might get more value with a more expensive phone. But other than that, most of us can probably survive with budget phones.

It's very refreshing to listen to someone review a phone that most people would either like to own or can afford! NO smartphone should cost (or is worth) more than $700.00! If people would wise up and realize this, maybe Samsung and Apple (the 2 main culprits that immediately come to mind) would lower their price points on their higher-end phones! It's very tough with today's economy for the average consumer to shell out their hard-earned $$$ for these devices that are these days a necessary part of life!

The thing is it’s not a thousand pound paid outright as most phones are on the never never. Apple and Samsung would be absolutely screwed if credit for phones was abolished. There sales figures and business model relies entirely on credit. Like who is going to actually go into the Apple Store and pay cash for a phone that costs more than a thousand dollars? Some food for thought and thoughtful food.

It is amazing how much better even the budget phones have become. It was not that long ago that I had a very slow and almost worthless budget phone that was dropping calls and even worse it was so slow that it lagged so much that I often had calls going to voicemail before I could answer the call. It was a ZTE Blade. My first phone and the worst phone I have ever had.

    • @AndroidDigest
      @AndroidDigest  Год назад +58

Yeah in your case, I'm a little worried 😂😂. I see a lot of people go from expensive iPhone to cheaper Android. Then they eventually give up on Android without seeing how good it can be.
This phone is definitely terrific for the money and handles all the basics well. I'm not having any issues with it and I come from flagship phones too. But if it's not good enough or if you feel a little discontent, don't be afraid to get a Google Pixel 6a, which is a good step up, and it's only $299 right now. You could also get the Galaxy A53 5G, another good step up, and that's around $400. But none of those are NECESSARY. You have enough phone for everything most people will need. But there are some really really good phones for $300 to $500 if using that nicer iPhones made you miss flagship phones.

I really enjoyed your review. I just up graded my A11 to the A14 5G and am very satisfied with the A14. I switched because the A11 was behaving slower and slower. I also had issues with sending pictures to email from text. Nothing worked to solve that problem. The A14 is like warp speed with none of the other problems the A11 had.
I really appreciate your approach towards me as budget consumer of smart phones. I don't live on my phone so 1000 dollar phones make no sense to me. I'm a laptop guy for that. But your approach made me subscribe because you sound very down to earth and my experience on this phone agrees with the points you made. 15 watt charging is plenty fast for most of us. 30 minutes will get you to 50% from empty, or from 50% to 80%. It doesn't stress the battery as much as higher wattage charging, either. If you're anything like me, I just top off at bedtime, roll out the door with a full charge, and go about my day. I currently have an A71 5G (4500 mAh battery), which supports 25 watt charging, but I use a 15 watt charger. Actually, the phone has an intermittent charging problem, so I find myself charging with standard charging speeds (10W) more often than not. It's still fast enough for my needs.

It used to be that budget phones were straight garbage and you needed to pay hundreds upon hundreds to get a good smartphone. I'm glad that Samsung has started changing the budget phone game, I would include Motorola there too but their phones suck on phone calls. It's nice that you no longer need to pay so much for a quality device. There aren't very many reviewers covering this phone and the previous Samsung a23 5g which you also covered. Thanks for doing what the big tech channels won't, like you said, they are tech snobs that don't care about cheaper phones. Not everyone can afford the latest $1000 iPhone or Galaxy phones.

I use the expensive phones, so I'm amazed that I'm not feeling slowed down by this. Two years ago even the A51 felt slow in some ways. This feels pretty smooth all around. It also has nfc which I forgot to mention. Really really good for $200. Outside of a meh camera this is a strong recommended for people who need a cheap phone

@@AndroidDigest Right now I have a Motorola Edge 2022 and while I love a lot about it, the call quality is lacking. So I'm looking at either a new a23 5g or an Amazon renewed s21 Fe. How is the call quality on the a23? Is it actually good for a single firing speaker? The only thing holding back the Samsung budget phones are a single bottom firing speaker and lack of AMOLED displays. I do think Samsung will eventually put that on even their budget lineup phones to beat the competition. To me, call quality is a huge deal and I've gotten rid of phones because of that. Btw, thanks for replying 👍. Some tech reviewers say they'll respond in the comments but never do. @@AndroidDigest yeah RUclips notifications are spotty even as a user so I bet running a channel is worse. But I appreciate your engaging in conversation 👍. I ended up getting an Amazon renewed s21 FE. I love the budget Samsung devices but they don't have everything I'm looking for. This s21 FE has been great in all aspects except battery life. It averages 3-5 hours on screen time which is decent enough but not stellar. Samsung is getting really good though with their budget devices and I was really tempted to get a new a23 over this renewed s21 FE. But with the a23 not having dual speakers was the biggest reason I decided against it.

Too many reviewers, even good ones like MKBHD, they will use high in phones all the time and then they will decide one day to use one bad phone, like the Moto g play or something, and instead of comparing that phone to all the competition and all the phones around one or $200. They will just go tell you to buy a used flagship phone. Not realizing that not everyone wants a used phone. My first smartphone was a Samsung Galaxy S6 in 2015. It was at the time THE Android flagship. It was so good, I kept it 5 years. In 2020, I switched to Samsung S10e. Another fantastic premium phone. Certainly not a mid-category phone. I kept it 3 years.
Over the last few months, I bought a Galaxy A12 for a friend on low budget. It was his first phone, and he is an elderly. He didn't need much. He still has it, and is satisfied. I would not be satisfied with the A12. Slow, screen quality not great, photos meh... Last year, I bought a A13 as a gift for my mother in law. I also bought one for myself. I wanted a second phone, without a Sim card, with longer battery time, and a bigger screen, to chill in bed watching stuff. The A13 felt better than the A12, but still meh to me. Slow CPU, 720p with low dpi. I feel like the A13 is still insufficient to me. The image quality is lacking.
The S10e coming to its death (support end), I sold it, and figured I need something better than the A13 (remember, my 2nd phone).
So.... I bought the A14 5g. I'm done paying 1000$ CAN for phones. So, here is what I think about this 330$ CAN phone.
    WOW!!!
1080p with 400ish dpi!! NICE!! The picture is very good!
CPU is MUCH FASTER than the A13's CPU. Feels super adequate. Remember, I'm used to flagships!
Camera. 50Mp WITH image stabilisation!! Awesome. Photos are great!
Headphone jack. It was necessary for me. S6 had it. S10e had it. No way I was going to pass that.
It has NFC. Good. My A13 didn't.
I put a 128Mb Micro-SD card in it. So, I have 64 Gb for apps and 128Gb for media. I transfered with smartswitch all my stuff from the S10e (128Gb). I have more space remaining on the budget phone than on my high-end S10e. It feel better with 64+128 than 128. Super happy.
Speaker sucks on the A14 5G. It's worse than on the A13, and S10e had top stereo speakers. It does not matter anyway. I have a Beatspill, a baby JBL bluethoot speakers, and the headphone jack. Really, the sucky speaker is of small consequence for me.
I am totally satisfied with the A14 5g. For what I paid, it's awesome. 😊

But it's easier to fit the components in a larger frame, so that's what they do, probably to cut costs, they use a similar body in multiple phones too

I have one. It rates a solid B to B+ across the board, except on charging. It's camera performance and overall function makes the owners of the "best" phones ask if the $1000 price difference is worth it. But, it's a slow charger- just charge it overnight and put the $1000 in the bank.

I have the moto g62 5g. It cost me $175. SD 695, A triple camera setup with 50MP main camera, an 8MP ultrawide and a useless 2MP depth sensor. A 20W charger in the box with cable, ofcourse. Fingerprint sensor on the power button. 120hz refresh rate IPS panel, 6GB RAM, 128GB storage, stereo speakers, 5000 mAh battery and ofcourse, a headphone jack. I tested it with 5g, got maximum speed of a whopping 1.4Gbps+. And the most important thing for me - clean UI, close to stock android with zero ads.

    • @AndroidDigest
      @AndroidDigest  Год назад

Yeah this phone will be pretty similar for the money. It was selling for $175 at Besy Buy. Only 90hz. But headphone jack, sd card slot, I'd say it's equal in speed, maybe even faster than the Moto you have. But my main point isn't to say the A14 5G is better, it's mainly to say it's very close, neck and neck spec wise. So you got a great phone for great price. The best thing in my opinion is it has expandable memory via Micro SD card unlike an iPhone, my only gripe is it charges pretty slow but that's my only complaint.

Nice video! I just got one of these myself about a week ago. I've been using totally low-budget phones for a while, ya know, the kind of things you get for free if you have the "lifeline" phones in the US (aka "Obamaphones"...which btw is a stupid name, because Obama really didn't have anything to do with the program lol), so this is a major step up for me definitely. Really, the only complaint about it have so far is that like you said the single speaker isn't too great. But then again, if I'm really gonna do some serious listening on it, I'll plug in a decent pair of headphones.

just bought this yesterday, I have the Dimensity 700 variant and I can say the performance is decent, no over heating issues.
camera is good, I'm surprised that this phone takes good photos, well not as good as my a52s 5g but decent enough
but the best is it's battery life, my current screen on time is already at 4hrs but i still have 53% battery left, I recon this can last you around 7 or 8hrs sot.
definitely would last you a day without worries
cons: they give you usb C to C cable but no charger on the box (no charger is fine, but since the included cable is C to C you would need to buy a charger instead of using your old ones)
another is the design, the phone is too slippery, the texture on it's back doesn't help, it's too slippery and too thick for a phone in 2023 but not a deal breaker for me

The Pixel 6a has two speakers one by the type C port and the other speak is the earpiece when playing media. The speakers on the Pixel 6a is on the loud side unless you are in a noisy environment.
There is the fact the Pixel 6a takes some nice pictures that gives higher priced smartphones a run for their money. Plus the fact the CPU on the Pixel 6a is 400MHz faster than the Galaxy A14. This last one might not be useful to most people but it's there for those does find it useful. The Pixel 6a supports both Nano-SIM and eSIM.

Just bought one, first thing I did as usual was buy a silicone case and screen protector for it so I don't break it. So really it's no different to look at and touch as an expensive phone in a silicone case with a screen protector. Seems no different to all the expensive phones, iPhone13/14 etc loads of people I know have, does everything I need it to do really well.

Yeah it does most of the basics, glad you protected it just in case.

I recommend a Galaxy A33 5G over this one, Why?
Because the A33 has IP67, Super Amoled 90Hz FHD screen, 4K both rear and front camera, Stereo speakers and an under screen fingerprint scanner!

My biggest negative with that phone is the virtual proximity sensor. The performance will be nearly identical as well, that phone has exynos which isn't always the best. But yes, the water resistance is a big deal and getting an amoled screen is a big deal too

It's basically the same with all brands... If you want the top features you gotta pay alot... If you get mid grade or budget phones, there are compromises in the good features. Different companies make different downgrades... Depends on what you like on your phone and how much you want to spend.
