  • These are one of the oldest living species of animals that exist today. they haven't really changed much in the last 200 million years and they've been around for around 450 Million years! Horseshoe crabs are scary looking but they are safe animals to encounter. Just don't accidentally step on its spines..

Never ever pick them up by their tails. If they loose their tail it will ensure their death. It helps them to right themselves if they get turned over. Poor things. I do classes on these amazing animals. Please pick them up like they are a bowl with two hands. They do not have teeth and there are no barbs on their tails. Jacob you should really tell people these things to protect them.

When I was younger I was still somewhat afraid of insects so one day I was in my bed, heard a HUGE click, and looked at the floor and saw a green light. Nothing unusual, we had cords for our devices that had lights on them. But then I realized that we did NOT have cords in that spot. Why did I realize that? Because I thought I saw the cord... Moving... And it had two dots side by side, like eyes....
I very quickly realized there was an animal with GLOWING EYES in my room.
I left in horror and slept in the living room. Even though my brother looked it up and found out it was harmless.
I really love those insects now but back then I fell victim to their defense mechanism.. that is, creeping out predators, confusing them, and making them think it can see them all at once. Turns out those dots aren't even eyes, they just look like them. It's entirely a bluff.
Anyways the point is it's really funny how some harmless things can seem so scary when you first see them. It's not that they are really scary, you're just so confused you don't know how to react

It’s even more fascinating when you find out just how many “False” crabs there are, that being the group of animals that are more closely related to arachnids like horseshoe crabs that evolved to be exactly like true crabs.
Which leads into an even more fascinating topic of how ultimately everything evolves into crabs in the end.
