    Thank you Julie!! Your specific directions are SO helpful. I've had no coloring in 4 months. My fabulous hairdresser and I were preparing for me to eventually go silver, so had only been using demi permanent color over the last 2 years, so my demarcation is subtle. I've scoured the internet - and your 'money-piece' highlights will be perfect. Like you I can see the dominant silver up front, and very minimal in the back. With COVID - it's gonna be a do it myself job!

    Hi Julie! This is a really empowering and informative series! I have a question - you need toon putting a grey toner on top of the yellow highlights. I’ve seen purple toners, silver permanent color, silver or platinum semi permanent color. What exactly do you mean by a grey toner? Do you have any specific types you recommend? Thanks so much!

    • @juliethehairapist
      @juliethehairapist  4 года назад +9

      Hi Katya, because the wild colors like pink, green, etc. became so popular the manufacturers starting making silver, grey, marble grey and a few other variations of grey. I love Pravana and Pulp Riot but the direct dyes are a product I would feel comfortable using any brand. I'm looking for color selection because it's a what you see is what you get product. You can Google Pravana silver vs smokey silver for an example. I mostly use Pravana Silver when toning yellow because most people want it light. But if you're not very light from the grey I prefer the smokey or marble grey colors.

    Hi Julie! New here and 3 years later finding you. I have now been color-free for almost 2 years. This (Aug) will be my non-colorversary. I am naturally a level 5-6 dark brown. My outgrowth (no halo, is about 6 inches give or take...but I have the brown-auburn red (warm) tones. I am wanting to blend that vs bleach it all. I love my silver coming in , subtle, yet sparkly as my hair is dry, course and very thick! I cut it to just at my shoulders leaving about another 5 to 6 inches to work with. I do not have a lot of grey underneath from my ears down. It is mostly the top down to the temple (ear area). I would love to add a money piece and blend the back to a more Ashe medium brown. Is this possible? Your hair is gorgeous!!!!

      @Carolina Thomas yes you can match your Henna for your natural uncolored hair. You will apply to your new growth only, process then rinse. Yes it will wash out but that's the good news. Because it's all white and at the scalp, where hair is not very porous, you will want to use a decent amount of depth of color because the white will dilute the color. • @juliethehairapist
      @juliethehairapist  3 года назад

      You mix to pancake consistency and not too much because after 20 -30 min in the open air the bleach stops working. Which is also why we put it in foil, as long as it's in foil and not dress it will work for hours. Fresh bleach for best lift, skinny amount in foil or it won't lift enough, bleach needs to be slightly thick but not paste and not too thin that it's runny. Please feel free to contact me through my Facebook page or email juliethehairapist@gmail.com if you need any help along the way. This is so good . Is it possible to rid the existing warm brown by also adding alternating low lights at the d-line with a neutral level five color. Both the demarcation and the warm and cool tones are so hard to deal with. I’m sending this to my stylist. I can’t do this myself. Thanks in advance.

    • @juliethehairapist
      @juliethehairapist  2 года назад +1

      Yes, I don't talk about it because it can be confusing but to someone who understands hair it is not confusing. After you place your highlight then you can color the warm hair with deposit only color (hair color with 5 volume peroxide instead of 20 and you just add water to make the 20 volume be 5 volume). Apply from the line of demarcation to the ends but not through the ends. After you have applied to the midshaft all over then apply to the ends. The more porous the hair, the darker it will take the color so apply last fixes that problem. Please feel free to contact me for any help along the way juliethehairapist@gmail.com ❤️

    Hi, Julie, Thank you for all these grey transition tutorials. They are so instructive and encouraging to those who want to transition on our own or under the hands of a capable colorist. I went to the salon to have some baby grey highlights and lowlights and am ready to add more highlights since I am all grey. I purchased the Pravana Silver for toning my highlights. I've been using it to tone my highlights, apllying it on wet hair, diluted somewhat with conditioner., for 15 mins.
    How soon following this light highlighting can I add more highlights?
    I have colored my hair, but never used bleach.
    Can you outline the specific individual steps following bleaching. Do you rinse with warm or cold water? Do you wash the hair (what shampoo would you recommend). Do you use a purple shampoo? Do you condition at this step?
    Re toning: Do you apply the Pravana Silver on wet or dry hair. Do you use the toner at full strength or do you dilute the toner with conditioner? How long do you leave the toner on the bleached hair.
    Finally, how do you maintain the toner. Wet or dry hair, full strength or diluted, how long leave it on. Thanks very much, Julie.

    • @juliethehairapist
      @juliethehairapist  2 года назад

      @J Harris, sorry for the late response. You can add more highlights any time. When you're adding new highlights you MUST be careful of the previously highlighted hair if it ends up in the foil. What that means is the hair you picked up to put in the foil hat the dark new growth and old highlights. You paint all the new growth, then do your best to pull out the old highlights and push to the side of the foil, then paint the dark hair that's left. If you send me pics of your hair I can give you better advice juliethehairapist@gmail.com. Thank you for watching my super amateur videos ❤

      Even if you don’t have the streaks naturally you can do it artificially and still not be committed to color. I love recommending the money piece or silver highlights for my clients that don’t find their natural color bright enough. Silver highlights are beautiful and match the tone of your natural color. In addition you only have to do it a couple times a year or just let it grow out. If you email me I can send you pics of a silver highlight. julietgehairapist@gmail.com

    • @juliethehairapist
      @juliethehairapist  2 года назад

      @Joanne Leib so sorry for the late response, it's my son's Senior year of high school and he has me 🏃‍♀️. Yes don't have the salon tone, toning with light colors is like applying conditioner in the application. Intense colors like blue, red, green, etc will stain bleached and virgin hair but the toner we use to transition is silver which is really a very light lavender aka a pastel. So because it's such a light color it can't hang on. There are things you can do to help and or make it fade faster. When you apply the hair needs to be squeaky clean and NO conditioner. Rinse the direct dye out not shampoo, don't wash for a few days if possible. But the good news you can do this yourself, it will eventually last longer because you're able to apply more often which will help in the fading as well. Please feel free to contact me for any help along the juliethehairapist@gmail.com ❤️

      I'm not a fan of doing anything permanent to the new growth. I prefer to either match the old color with temporary color at the new growth only. The other option is to lighten the hair as much as possible because our natural color is lighter than the artificial color. So any lightening will help with the transition. Hi Julie, Thanks so much for this video. Most, if not all, of my growth is white. My hairdresser (when I could get to her before Covid-19) started coloring my hair very light and adding light highlights. My question is this: since my base color is almost totally white will I be able to use a silver toner on it and get a color that has some color dimension. I don't want to be solid white. Will I have to have dark highlights such as gray to give it color dimension? Thanks again.

    • @juliethehairapist
      @juliethehairapist  4 года назад

      Yes if you are completely white you would need to put in darker streaks for dimension but you don't need to do your whole head you could just do the front and underneath your part so you won't see the outgrowth. You could basically do similar to my dark streak, mine is my natural color but your placement could be the same.

If you go to your local beauty supply store and look at the swatches find the one that is closest to your dark colored hair that's the level of color for your hair. Hi there!! Thank you so much for doing these videos!! I was wondering--Which video has the explanation of the doughnut? Also, I have NEVER been able to have a salon lift my natural dark brown hair without breakage. It is fine--even Olaplaex did not help. I have used Redken chromatics and Shades Eq for decades to have a dark 3N/ 4N hair color. I am 6 months into my grow out. The orange/red that my "dark" has faded is what I do not like. I do not really want to use direct dyes bc of it making my hair dry-- and I do not want the silver /salt and pepper to have any process or dye on it. --sorry. .In the past- I have tried shades eq in Moss and Ivy--also 9T but no luck. I am not sure if using the lower volume would make a difference--but I have been pondering just 2 highlights to help the demarcation line. First, I was going to use Malibu CPR. I was thinking of trying it on a test strand first. Anyhow, thank you!

    • @juliethehairapist
      @juliethehairapist  4 года назад +2

      The reason why I love direct dyes is they will not mess up my natural color. Especially when I'm toning for transition. Shades EQ is a semi permanent color and can leave a line of demarcation. It sounds like you would like the Biolage Plant based color, it only works on porous or lightened hair and it's mixed with hot water. Jack Martin uses this type of color most of the time. If you send me pics of your hair through my Facebook page or email jjjcozzo@gmail.com I can give you better advice.

    So if this is my first application since dying black, I use the developer mixed with the bleach until it lifts to the blonde color. Rinse and condition. Then later or the next day place foils in the same spot but this time use the vivid silver only then process? Does my hair need to be dry before applying the vivid silver or wet? I've been dying my own hair for 30 years with cream and developer. I know I can do it. I just want to be sure since this is my first time bleaching. Thank you!

    • @juliethehairapist
      @juliethehairapist  3 года назад +3

      1st step, place the highlight in the foil.
      2nd wait for the color and you might need to reapply if it's stops lifting after an hour.
      3rd wash packets out at light yellow but don't condition.
      4th apply toner to highlights not worrying about it getting on other parts of the hair.

    • @juliethehairapist
      @juliethehairapist  4 года назад +3

      A toner can be any type of color, permanent, semi, demi or direct dyes. The difference between direct dyes and all the rest is they are truly temporary because they have no developer. They only work on white or porous hair.

      @Veronica Santacruz once you have put in a light yellow highlight, you can use any brand silver direct dye/temporary color. Unfortunately the industry will mislabel color and it will be labeled semi-permanent, direct dye or temporary color. How to know is a true temporary/direct dye HAS NO developer, no mixing. Whatever comes out of the tube ot bottle that is the color. A silver direct dye/temporary color will come out a lavender color because that will cancel the yellow highlight color and will result in a silver highlight.
      If you are trying to camouflage your new growth and don't have a highlight then you will want to use a temporary brown color on your new growth only. This will cover your grey but will completely wash out. So after your hair grows out you will just stop coloring. Yes you still have to color but it's an easier application and looks more natural. If you send me pics of your hair I can give you better advice juliethehairapist@gmail.com. Thank you for watching my super amateur videos ❤️

    • @juliethehairapist
      @juliethehairapist  4 года назад +1

      Not a silly question, if you're strand testing for lightness using bleach then find the darkest hair that is easy for you to see and grab. If you're strand testing for toning then find the lightest section of yellow that you can see. Your strand test section should be at least a 1/2" x 1/2" in size.

    Will the silver over dye tone out the yellowing/orange in the mid to ends? How to I get rid of all that warmth?

    • @juliethehairapist
      @juliethehairapist  Год назад +1

      @nothing works works The silver will be greet on the yellow but not orange. The silver color is actually a light lavender color and it cancels the yellow and leaves us looking silver. But orange requires blue to cancel the orange. If you choose a blue toner to cancel the orange, the yellow part will look slightly green (yellow+blue =green). If you use the lavender to cancel the yellow, the orange will still be orange. If you’re trying to tone yellow-orange ends I would choose the silver knowing it will do a great job on the yellow and not so great on the orange. If you send me pics of your hair I can give you better advice for color options. juliethehairapist@gmail.com

    Hi Julie, I've watched your three videos and plan to do the face framing highlights because that's where my lightest silvers are. Amazingly, I have No gray under the back of my naturally dark brown (growing out) hair. Weird. Anyway, After I bleach the "money areas", I wait a day to put in the silver toner, is what I'm gathering.
    Two questions: 1. What amount of 20% developer do I add to the powdered bleach- do I add enough for a light frosting consistency? and And the Pravana Silver Toner, was it called "Moody Blue Chromasilk Express Tones 5 Minute"? Do I add anything to this? My hair is a light dyed auburn with 1.5" growout. Thanks

    • @juliethehairapist
      @juliethehairapist  4 года назад

      You can tone with the silver direct dye immediately after you wash out the bleach. Mix your bleach and peroxide to pancake or cake mix consistency. Pravana Vivids is what silver direct dye I used. There are other lines that make a silver color but I like Pravana Vivids. Direct Dye is what the color/toner is called they are a what you see is what you get, whatever comes out of the tube is the color. No developer and they are mostly used to create the wild colors like pink, purple, etc. but they make a silver color as well.

      @@Irish-Triplet remember you can do a test strand first. That will teach you everything in to be successful and you won't stress. You will be working on just one slice of hair, that will reveal how your hair lightens, timing, etc. Also the color I suggested was Silver not Smokey Silver but you can still use the Smokey Silver. It's a darker silver more of a metal silver. I would put it on wet hair and not leave it on very long that will keep it from going too dark and too drab if you don't want it to be more of a medal silver then exchange it for Silver. If you Google Pravan silver vs smoky silver it will show you the difference in the color. Please feel free to contact me through Facebook or email with pics of your hair for help along the way.

      @@juliethehairapist Thanks for your additional advice! My only "silver" hair is on the left side of my bangs and temple. The rest is salt and pepper on the crown, which is mostly 2/3 pepper, 1/3 salt. For that reason, I purchased the smokey silver. I'll probably put some silver in with the crown, just so it doesn't look so "medal" like/muddy and dark, like you're saying. The bottom half of my hair below the cranium, is mostly brunette with very little grey. I won't worry so much about that. I'm definitely open to suggestions and will do the strand test. What is your email? Thanks!

    • @juliethehairapist
      @juliethehairapist  3 года назад +1

      Hi Susana, Color remover works but I don't like to use it because it thrust you into another chemical. That chemical will also need to be toned because the only color a color remover can bring up is orange. 1st we use a colour remover wash it out, then we put in the highlight, then we color the orange hair in between the foils to a normal color, wash everything out and then tone the light yellow highlighted hair to silver. I prefer to give the client a heavy highlight that drowns out the old color and blends the new growth until they grow out their own color. You only have to highlight once to blend so it's less time, less costly, and better on the hair.

      You are correct about the purple shampoo and it doesn’t work for me either. You will love using direct dyes which sometimes are labeled semi permanent, but they are actually a direct dye to get rid of the yellow. A direct dye is a color that has no developer and what that means is, its color only. Because it has no developer it will not change your natural color and it will be conditioning to your hair. Here’s a couple links that explain how I use them on my hair.

    Can't we just go in and lowlight with our natural color between the streaks/chunks of grey ???

    • @juliethehairapist
      @juliethehairapist  2 года назад +1

      @Zoe Zzzzarko Great question! There are lots of ways to transition, that process would result in you having less brightness on the new growth, still having 100% dark ends and a line of demarcation.
      The reason I don't choose that direction is because all transitions are moving from artificial dark hair to naturally lighter hair no matter the artificial color and natural color. By adding lightness to the artificial color from the line of demarcation instead of adding darkness to the natural color, will result in a brighter color, the line of demarcation will be gone and a faster transition.
      I would go the temporary color route if you want to add color as opposed to removing color. Instead of adding lowlights, it's easier, faster, less expensive and will look great if you use a temporary color on your new growth only. It will make your white hair look like a highlight and camouflage the line of demarcation. You can do just the area that shows or your whole head but new growth only.
