Acceptance Precedes Change

  • This was ‘THE’ defining issue in the early church and in my opinion it’s still a huge issue for us.
God accepts us without first requiring any change from us, because his acceptance can’t be earned, it’s a grace gift.
We however have behaved as if acceptance belongs to us and we can charge people what we want for it.
Acceptance precedes change and that is and always will be the at the heart of the gospel!
We gotta stop charging people for what we freely received.

I think Jesus probably knew Zacchaeus's name because the people lining the street were murmuring amongst themselves saying stuff like "Hey look at Zacchaeus, got to climb a tree 'cos he's so short. What a dork." (Great message by the way. Caught you at the A/G Conference in NZ last year and shocked the church by playing it over the last two Sunday mornings).

You had me right up until the end. What is wrong with being a transvestite? Why does someone need to change that?

I understand wanting to help someone change a behaviour that is harmful. But what is harmful, sinful, about being a transvestite?

I'm sorry no one has responded to your questions before now Nicholle and I hope someone from Paul Scanlon's ministry does. The short answer -which is never the best answer - is that God doesn't make mistakes. Our gender is identical to our biology and DNA. If you've got man bits you're a man, if you've got woman bits you're a woman, if you've got an Y chromosome (except in a very, very small number of cases worldwide) you're male (nearly 100% of XXY people are physiologically male). To say otherwise is to say that God made a mistake, which is to say He is not perfect, in which case He's not God. What Paul says here about accepting and not judging etc. is still valid and true. 🙂

I agree, up until that point I was all on board. There is nothing wrong with being trans or gay for that matter. 🙂

@@robatrhemaNo, because *being* queer is not *saying* anything, is *living* a different way, without harming anyone. It is not *claiming* that God made a mistake, just as someone with a disability, it is not something that anyone is entitled to *judge or want to change but God´s.* And God accepts people all of kinds, more importantly the *different.* So nothing is wrong with transgender, homosexual, sapphic, non binary, queer people. But *there is* something wrong with the people who feel *entitled to ask them to change,* something that is part of their identity and *God himself loves,* because to love is to *accept completely.* And as he *loves* and accepts something that is not harmful to anyone at all, he will *never* make an exception, especially just because *you* may have a different view and don’t accept them the way *God* does.
You can keep your views, your judgement, but it *doesn’t change* the relationship that person has with God himself, nor their faith. That is *not* your relationship to judge, or *assume* anything of, that is *not your life.*

You lost me at Trump! Jesus would not condone his wretched behavior. Trump and his supporters are a huge reason I no longer subscribe to Christianity.
