I've always seen Mr.Sandman as a personal rival in Punch-Out!!, but when I've seen him in Super Punch-Out!!, it was like seeing an old friend very far from his glory days.
I'm glad they did him 100 better in Punch-Out!! Wii. Harder, stronger and WAY more intimidating.

I like that actually! Very true with lots of boxers as well. An example I saw a while back that made me very sad was Evander ‘The Real Deal’ Holyfield. One of the best heavyweight fighters in the 90’s is still fighting in his 50’s as a much older, slower and weaker fighter. He got knocked out by a young fighter and it’s frustrating to see stuff like that.

I’d like to think that the reason why Mr. Sandman isn’t as much of a threat in Super Punch Out is because he was holding back and wasn’t taking the fight seriously. After the 2nd knockdown, the text bubble on the side (presumably Sandman’s coaches) says “Give him full power now, champ!”, which implies that he wasn’t going all out until he was in danger of losing. Another implication that Sandman was holding back for the first two phases is how he only does one Uppercut after signaling for Dreamland Express, but in the third phase (when he goes “full power”), he does the usual Three Uppercuts.

They also butchered the Punch-Out franchise by taking the Little Mac identity away in Super Punch-Out. Hold on, wouldn’t that mean all of this game stuff would butcher Macho and Bull too? I don’t see your point of why Sandman specifically is butchered.
Also, he’s not in the World Circuit anymore, he’s in the Major circuit so he should be easier, and no normal player is gonna know to do some random pattern to get him dizzy, in fact he feels like a preparation for the World circuit to me which fits, he’s the Major champion and his nerf fits, no more painful moments of Sandman laughing at you and more learning patterns. Which makes sense for this, cause Sandman wasn’t’t even fun to fight for me, he’s so annoying and tiring, but this is my opinion, thank you for reading.

I enjoyed the video, but to be fair, Sandman actually takes longer to beat than any other opponent, and everyone can be beaten in under 15 seconds. But with that said, Mr. Sandman has literally zero RNG to worry about, 100% consistent pattern and is one of the easiest fights to nail in a run. Same for Bald Bull, but he's the boss of the Minor Circuit, which has no RNG in any fights. I think Masked Muscle might be RNG-free as well, but the first two Major Circuit fights with Bob Charlie and Dragon Chan both have significant RNG to the patterns, so you'd think Sandman would have some way of switching things up as well.

Well I mean, they redistributed the characters from MSPO in SPO pretty well. Also the 3 times faster thing, thats quite stupid and unfair for SPO, because its only 1 round. Well because, Mr Sandman here is the champion for the major circuit, which is why hes just easier. And its just so unfair that you use dizzy as a way to say its easier, no way in hell will you use dizzy strats on your first time playing, thats a speedrun strat that takes a long long time to master the timing. This is clearly a biased review. You were super unfair to SPO for no reason. Heck Id say the SPO Sandman fight was way funner, just normally with supers and no dizzy strats. The original was annoying and felt unfair. Same goes for Super Macho Man, his MTPO timing felt stupid and unfair, his SPO appearence was about memorization and remaining calm, not spamming a button that half the time will fail for no reason. Bald bull, i mean id say is the boss of the tutorial, so not anything good but you were so damb unfair i just can't stand it

What I really enjoyed about the Sandman fight in Mike Tyson's Punch Out that I don't feel like enough people do is, you can really control the fight almost the entire time, even against one of the top opponents. When you throw a head punch in the beginning of the fight, after his early pattern, he will always dodge and go into an uppercut that is very easy to time and dodge. Then you get in a head punch followed by 3 stomach punches. Immediately after this combo ends, I'd always go for another head punch, knowing he's going to dodge it but also knowing he's going to go into his uppercut, which I know how to dodge and counter for another head punch/3 stomach punches. Then an extra head punch that misses but triggers the same pattern. Rinse and repeat and repeat, and I get in a rhythm, deal a lot of damage, meanwhile he can't touch me, until...
He just blocks the extra high punch straight up. Uh oh, I know what that means. He's going for his Sandman express, those 3 uppercuts back to back to back, and the first one is VERY difficult to time. If I time that one though, it means I'll time the other 2 and then get to hit him with a long counter combo. But this is the only part of the fight where I feel like he can really get me. And he does force you to counter this later in the fight multiple times, so you do have to get good at it. But up until this point, I feel like I control and dominate almost every inch of the fight and because of the damage I do in that part, I feel like he's not really that tough.
But a lot of people don't force the tempo by throwing those extra punches to prompt that rhythm. Instead they wait for Sandman to punch first and it takes more time to get his stamina meter down and it's also harder to time because you're not in a rhythm. I know my strategy isn't the most advanced and there's way better technique out there, but there's a lot of people who aren't even doing that much either.

I remember a very easy way of beating him on NES. At least on the european Mr Dream version of the game. On emulator it doesn't always seem to work. If I recall correctly, whenever he is passive just punch him at the gut and as he's blocking quickly punch him in the face. He's not quick enough to switch guard. Repeat until his stamina is depleted.

To me, these are all valid reasons someone might prefer MTPO over SPO, more than ways they specifically ruined Sandman. Personally, my least favorite iteration of Sandman is the Wii version. In trying to merge him with Tyson, they lost a lot of the original character's charm and personality. His normal attacks can be quite tricky, but after the first half of Round 1, the Title Defense fight starts to feel incredibly rote and predictable. The winky punches, Dreamland Express, and that quick-time event at the end are all extremely regular and easy to dodge, and as the fight progresses, those moves start to be practically the only ones he does.

You only had one round to beat each fighter in super punch out, so they had to make it possible to beat Sandman in one round. Sandman also represents the 8th of 16 fighter in Super Punchout, so he is more in line with Bald Bull #1 from Punchout than he is with Sandman, who was 12th of 14 fighters in Punch out. You can hit a guy in Punchout while he is trying to hit you, so the counter does exist in Punchout.

  • @Morhamms357
    @Morhamms357 11 месяцев назад

This is mostly something that applies to not just every returning fighter in Super Punch-Out!!, but every fighter in the game. The game's defining characteristic is the "Sit tf down" mentality the game has. If you know the ins and outs of the fighters, you can win in incredible times. In the other games, this mainly just made you win fast, but you could still very well mess up against the opponent, and in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, the game encourages an *opposite* fighting style, much more of an out fighting style due to Little Mac's tiny size. While there are optimizations, guard manipulations, and more to give you the advantages, most fights in the game have their pace controlled by the opponent.
If anything, Mr. Sandman got it kind of good! Really good! He is the longest fight in the game even when you play utmost perfectly, and one of only two characters that go into the double digits. This is because even in a tool assisted speedrun, you can't prevent Mr. Sandman from unleashing the Dreamland Express, the only character in the game who *will* show you their signature move.

Theory On Why Mr.Sandman Got So Bad In The Super Punch Out For SNES:
As we can see almost every fighter from mtpo retired and full new circuit was created which indicates that a lot of time has passed from mtpo so with time because of age sandman lost grip of his fights and he lost many positions to new faces of aran ryan haike higgaro and mad clown and only managed to stay as major circuit champion taking this place in the fight with bald bull which fights similary to sandman but worse because he too got worse with time and because of that sandman became champion of major circuit but far from his glory days of 1st place in world circuit. Also Macho Man Didnt got shaken from his place because he started using new strategies with exercise programs and with that he managed to stand his ground as the champion of world circuit

To people saying the game is watered down from the "Original" NES game, 2 things.
    1. Sandman is not from the NES, he's from the arcades, which actually hold the original TWO punch out games. The NES game is literally a watered down version of thee arcade games. Super Punch Out is a tribute to the arcade games that made the series in the first place, so don't you dare say that Super Punch Out is watered down compared the MTPO, cause they are two completely different leagues.
    2. Sandman himself is better in SPO. Whenever I hear compliments about Sandman in MTPO, it's always something like, "Oh he was complete BS, especially his Dreamland express, and I couldn't beat him for over two decades, until I learned about this exploit that the developers didn't think about when making the fight, so for the difficulty alone, I give it a 10/10!" Like, Sandman is actually fun here, and provides a good mid-game challenge.
TL;DR, MTPO is actually the watered down one, and has the worst Sandman fight.

It seems strange to me that you said Bald Bull and Super Macho Man were done well in Super Punch-Out, but Mr. Sandman wasn’t. Your criticisms of Sandman could also be applied to Bull and Macho. The bull-charge is much easier to counter in SPO, as is Macho’s spin punch. And your complaints about counter-punching, dizziness, and quick KO’s could also be applied to Bald Bull and Macho. In fact, in Super Punch-Out, Mr. Sandman is the fight that lasts the longest in a speedrun. You can optimally beat Sandman in 13 seconds like you state, but Bald Bull can be beaten in 8 seconds, and Macho can be beaten in 9. Heck, even Nick Bruiser can be beaten faster than Sandman. So, I don’t understand why you’re singling out Sandman here, when really, the problems you seem to have are with the whole SPO game.
