  • In this Spanish lesson you will learn when to use the verbs "ser" and "estar." A lot of people find it difficult to recognize when to use these verbs, but this video will show you when to use each of them. "¿Cómo es?" or "¿cómo está?" After this class, you won't be confused. In English you have the verbs "to be" and in Spanish, there are two equivalente verbs for this verb to be: ser & estar. In general terms, in Spanish, you will always use the verb "ser" if you are going to talk about long term qualities. You will use the Spanish verb "estar" if you are going to talk about temporary qualities. In addition, the verb "estar" will always be used to specify your or someone else's location. Let's review this: I am a human. Soy humana vs I am happy. The former is something I can't change. The latter is something for now temporary. If you get me upset, I will no longer be happy. You can also ask me where I am. I will say |estoy en México" because I am giving you my location. In this video I will give you more tips and tricks in Spanish so you have clues to decide if you are going to use the verb "ser" or the verb "estar". Watch my video and start mastering the fundamentals of Spanish language. It will not take you long and you will be much more fluent in Spanish.

Cuz Ana actually wants to make us spanish speakers that can talk spanish freely and fluently (and she is a good person in general) - if she make her online classes good (which is the case with her) more people watch and she is making money that way, but if the teacher is at school, I mean not every teacher at school, but these htat are at schools have the opportunity to not teach good and to not care (not just the teachers that teach you languages every type of teacher have the opportunity to do such a thing...Is is good is another question) and still taking the same amount of money for doing basically nothing...Which I think is irresponsible btw
When I think of it, it actually made sense 😂

For me the best way to understand this complicated stuff:
TO BE: two verbs in spanish
    i) Ser
    ii) Estar
    My recipe is:
    ---------------------------
Number one verb "Ser" means a PERMANTENT condition
Number two verb "Estar" means a TEMPORARY condition
For example "how are you? " in spanish you are talking about a TEMPORARY condition you must say "¿cómo estás?" in this case. If you say "I'm a man" you are talking about a PERMANENT condition so you must say "Soy un hombre" NEVER "Estoy un hombre". Other example If I translate"I'm drunk" into spanish with "soy borracho" I mean a permanent condition I mean I'm an alcoholic because "soy" implies a PERMANENT SITUATION. But if I mean a temporary condition I'd say "estoy borracho", tomorrow I'll be handover and the day after tomorrow I'll feel ok again.

I am a native speaker of Spanish language and can tell what... I never think in that because i'm a native and to me is so easy don't think in this, to me is weirdest you see complicated because to me somethings of your language are complicated for example the use of another and other is so hard knows when use it.

Ser is used to classify and identify permanent or lasting attributes. If the general rule isn´t specific enough for you, think of the acronym DOCTOR, which stands for Description, Occupation, Characteristic, Time, Origin, and Relationship.
Estar is used to indicate temporary states and locations. If the general rule doesn´t suffice, think of the acronym PLACE, which stands for Position, Location, Action, Condition, and Emotion.

Because I am also an etymologist (meaning not just a linguist), I think of "ser" as the sedentary "to be" verb and "estar" as the "to be" verb about standing. Here's how I think of the DOCTOR acronym as of what would make "ser" sedentary:
Description-whatever directly describes a noun "sits" as true by staying that way for at least a long, long time.
Occupation-such a thing "sits" as for assigning someone a title.
Characteristic-"sits" as part of someone or something.
Time-time "sits" by always moving forward and never pausing or reversing.
Origin-a beginning that now "sits" in the past.
Relationship-This fact "sits" by remaining true and can't be changed if it's consanguinity (relationship via birth).
Here's how I think of the PLACE acronym as of what "estar" has to do with standing:
Position-such a thing typically means standing.
Location-for a physical noun because an object stands in its location, and a person cannot remain in the same place forever, although he or she might sit there for a while.
Action-such a thing "stands" while being done.
Condition-this "stands" in someone or something currently and doesn't directly describe the noun.
Emotion-how someone feels for a seriously known limited time "stands" in the person's mind by not remaining there for more than a few days.

Spanish is a beautiful language, yet it gets hard sometimes while learning verbs and conjugations. I'm Mexican and I speak Spanish, but I relate the Spanish learning process to my experience in learning French; they're so much alike.
And just to help others to keep thing clear, there are a lot of differences between Spanish in each country. An easy example is the pronoun "vosotros" used in Spain, which in Latin America is "Ustedes". I would highly recommend you to learn Spanish from any country and later focus on a specific country, so you can learn all the idiomatic expressions and the grammar changes.
Very good video by the way! If I had to learn spanish as a second language I would totally use it.
PD: I wrote this in English so most people can understand it. :)

El acento neutro no es propio de ningún país compadre, todos hablan con acento y es obvio que no lo notes en ti mismo.
Cuando se habla de forma culta, en una reunión, en los noticieros, dando clases en universidad, por ej. se busca un hablar más neutro y en éstos casos incluso los chilenos tienen acento neutro. Pero en el diario vivir, en ningún país se habla sin acento.

Have you considered labeling the "Cómo estás?" Q&A as "feeling/emotion"?

I learned that for SER you use the acronym DOCTOR - Description, Occupation, Characteristic, Time/Date,Origin, Relationship. For ESTAR use the acronym PLACE - Position, Location, Action, Condition, Emotion

    • @AndreaPhillips5
      @AndreaPhillips5 10 лет назад +2

      Yes! That is so helpful.
And, for those like myself (lol) who need additional help remembering the words each letter of the acronyms stand for, one can think about the fact that one usually wants to find 'a doctor with good qualities' (or 'a quality doctor) to help one remember that ser/DOCTOR = qualities... and that one usually wants to visit or own 'a place that is in good condition' to help one remember that estar/PLACE = condition or essence ('the essence of a place').
It's not perfect, but it helps one remember what TYPE of words make up each acronym. Also, remembering that a doctor is an occupation and position and location are types of places can help jump start the memory and help one fill in the words for the rest of the letters.

I'm really struggling with the gender in Spanish
In my native language (Arabic) everything has a gender.
But unfortunately it is different from Spanish, which make it harder 😰
About 75% of gensers of nouns are the same in Spanish and Arabic, but what about the others?

"Vos" is used as "tú" is some South American countries. In Spain it sounds like old Spanish, something like "thou" in English. She is probably Mexican so she teaches her Spanish; as a teacher I would teach this other forms as well.
